Do you know of SQ3R? It is a reading method named for its five steps: survey, question, read, recite and review. Many students have begun using this method to better understand what they’re reading.
S=Survey
Survey means to skim a book. This step helps you gather the information. Go through the pictures, the title or tables, if there are any. Read the first sentence. This survey step only takes 5-10 minutes, but it is very important.
Q=Question
Question means to ask yourself, “What’s the book about? What’s the writer trying to tell me?” Once you get an idea of what you’re going to read, then you can read with a better understanding.
3R=Read, Recite, Review
①Read the book, looking for the answers to the questions you have had. Picture in your mind what the words are saying.
②Recite the main ideas of what you just read in your mind, or write down the main ideas on paper in your own words.
③Review what you have learned. Make notes to help you review.
Now you have a valuable study tool. Use it to help study for a test. Use it to help remember what you read. Use it to help understand important information.
45. What does the “S” in SQ3R mean?
A. To skim a book first. B. To find some good books.
C. To ask yourself some questions. D. To review what you have learned.
46. Why should you ask questions before reading a book?
A. To improve your reading speed. B. To remember more words.
C. To understand the book better. D. To better prepare for exams.
47. Who would be interested in this text?
A. Students who aren’t good at math.
B. Students who have trouble in reading.
C. A mother whose son likes playing sports.
D. A teacher who is looking for teaching methods.

I am Garrison. I live on a small farm in Kenya. Since the age of nine, I have helped to look after my family’s cows. As a child, in my free time, I enjoyed trying new ideas. Sometimes I could make my own inventions, such as electronic toys from car parts and peach-picking sticks. I also made other useful daily things for my neighbors.
At the age of 13, I invented something that changed my life. One night, a lion came into my family’s farm and killed one of our cows. I was angry. However, catching the lion, I thought, was not a safe way to solve the problem. So I decided to “invent” a solution.
The first idea I got was to use fire, because I thought the lion was scared of fire. But I came to know that didn’t help, because it was even helping the lion to see through the cowshed (牛棚). However, I didn’t give up. I continued.
And a second idea I got was to use a scarecrow (稻草人). I was trying to trick the lion into thinking that I was standing near the cowshed. But the lion was very clever. It came the first day, saw the scarecrow, and went back. But the second day, it came and found that the scarecrow didn’t move. It was always there! So the lion jumped in and killed another cow.
However, one night, I was walking around the cowshed with a torch (手電筒). To my surprise, the lion didn’t show up. Then I realized that the lion was afraid of a moving light. So I had an idea …
48. What was Garrison interested in when he was a child?

50. According to the passage, which word can best describe the writer?
A. Creative. B. Thankful. C. Open-minded. D. Outgoing.
51. What is probably the best title of the passage?
A. No pains, no gains B. Love animals, love life

Do you know about smart cities? What are they like? What can people do in a smart city? Let’s find out.
Imagine living your life like this: when you get up in the morning you say “open the window” to a computer and it opens the window. Then you finish breakfast and sit in front of your desk at home and begin to have classes on the Internet. With a help of building a smart city, this may come true one day.
The idea of a smart city goes back to 2010. A smart city uses smart technologies, such as the Internet to make our lives easier. People live in smart cities, where there is Internet almost everywhere. They can do many things at home, such as booking train tickets, paying water bills and so on.
Now China is making some cities smarter in these ways. For example, Guiyang is going to build free Wi-Fi in the city. Tianjin will start a “Smart City” plan to help reduce traffic jams.
In fact, smart cities are more common in foreign countries. Here are some great ones. Dubuque became the first smart city in the US. The city uses smart water meters (計量器) to let people know how much water they use and how to save water. Copenhage in Denmark has also used smart technologies. For example, most of their traffic lights have sensors (傳感器) to give the right way to buses. The city also has parking sensors and they help car drivers find parking spaces.
52. Which city is planning to start a smart city program to solve traffic problems?
A. Beijing. B. Guiyang. C. Tianjin D. Shanghai.
53. How can car drivers find parking spaces in Copenhagen?
A. With the help of Robots. B. With the help of parking sensors.
C. With the help of smart water meters. D. With the help of traffic light sensors.
54. What is NOT true about the smart city?
A. The Internet is almost everywhere.
B. The computer helps people open the window.
C. Smart water meters can’t help people reduce water waste.
D. The idea of a smart city started over 10 years ago.
55. In which section of the newspaper can we find this kind of passage?
A. Sports. B. Health. C. Culture. D. Science and technology.
第II卷(非選擇題 共40分)
第三部分 閱讀理解
第二節(jié) 任務(wù)型閱讀(共5 小題; 每小題2分,滿分10分)
閱讀下面短文,按要求完成各題。
“Creativity is the key to a bright future,” said education and business experts. Here is how schools and parents can help their children to develop their creativity.
If Dick Drew had listened to his boss in 1925, we might not have a product that we now think of as of great importance: a new kind of tape. Drew worked for the Minnesota Mining Company. At work he invented a kind of material strong enough to hold things together. But his boss told him not to think more about the idea. Drew didn’t stop and finally, using his own time, Drew improved the tape, which now is used everywhere by many people. And the company learned from its mistake. Now the company encourages its workers to spend 15% of their work time just thinking about and developing new ideas.
Creativity is not something one is just born with. A person with high intelligence (智力) does not mean that he uses it creatively. Creativity is the matter of using your intelligence to think of new ideas that are good for something.
We know that many schools have tried to develop students’ creativity, but some teachers only want to develop students’ reading, writing and math skills, and have to give up creativity for correct answers. Children from such schools can give correct answers, but they are unable to use them to work out problems.
It is important to give children choices. From the earliest age, children should learn to make decisions and understand their results. Even though it’s choosing between two kinds of food for lunch, decision-making helps thinking skills. As children grow older, parents should let their children ________ how to use their time or spend their money, but not help them too much if they make the wrong decision. The child may have a hard time, but that is all right.

Many have heard of shark fin soup. This famous and expensive dish is 61 (really) popular in southern China. But do you realize that you’re killing a whole shark each time you enjoy a bowl of shark fin soup?
When people catch sharks, they cut off their fins and throw the sharks back into the ocean. This is not only cruel, but also 62 (harm) to the environment. Without a fin, a shark 63 (can) swim any longer and slowly dies. Sharks are at the top of the food chain in the ocean’s ecosystem. If 64 (they) numbers drop too low, it will bring danger to all ocean life. Many believe that sharks can never be endangered because they are the 65 (strong) in their food chain. But in fact, around 70 million sharks 66 (catch) and traded in this industry every year. The numbers of some kinds of sharks 67 (fall) by over 90 percent in the last 20 to 30 years.
68 (environmental) protection groups around the world are teaching the public about “finning”. They have even asked governments 69 (develop) laws to stop the sale of shark fins. So far, no scientific 70 (study) have shown that shark fins are good for health, so why eat them? Help save the sharks!
