十一、閱讀單選
Dear Sofia,
I can’t believe another year has flown by! I thought I’d write and let you know what we’ve all been up to.
So far, the second year at university has been a lot harder than the first. I had to pull a few all-nighters (通宵達(dá)旦) to get my coursework done on time. I even considered leaving the basketball team, but friends persuaded (說(shuō)服) me to keep at it and I’m glad they did, because it does give me a welcome break from the library.
I decided to take up the chance of a year’s work placement (實(shí)習(xí)崗位) before my final year. It was hard to find one, though. Placements got taken quickly. Thankfully, my cousin Rob helped me get one, in a big company and with good pay. I’m hoping everything will work out well.
I’m hoping to get to France in the New Year, so I can see my sister and her family there. She had another baby in June. Hannah and Kristin are enjoying having a little brother to play with. They love the of Marseilles and I can’t see them ever moving back. I’m also planning to visit my grandma and grandpa over the holiday. Grandma’s not in the best of health and looking after her is lots of work for Grandpa. He still hangs on to his old car, although he does find driving a lot more difficult than he used to.
Anyway, I think that’s all from me.
With much love,
Rose

So Jade hurried off to get her bicycle. The two friends rode off.
“Why don’t we ride down to the forest? That will be exciting,” suggested Jade. “The road to the forest is very bumpy (顛簸的)” said Karen. She always took care when out riding her bike. “Oh, come on!” said Jade. Carefully riding their bikes between the rocks and fallen branches on the road, the two friends finally ached the forest. Jade picked some beautiful flowers and handed half of them to Karen. “Here’s your reward (獎(jiǎng)勵(lì)) after that long ride!”
After a break, the girls decided to head for home. They got on their bikes but a bad luck! They discovered that they both had flat tyres (輪胎癟了). “I told you the road was terrible, and now look what happened!” Karen said. “I’m sorry,” said Jade.
“Don’t worry, it’s not that bad. I’ve had an idea,” said Karen kindly. “Did you see that empty truck? We can ask the driver to take us home. And we can pick some flowers for everyone!”

Have you ever been in a class when all the students are kept in at lunchtime just because two or three students won’t stop talking? The teacher gets irate and suddenly everyone is in trouble instead of just the students who caused the problem. This is called “collective (集體的) punishment” and many students in Australia want it stopped in schools.
Some say that collective punishment teaches young people that their behavior has an effect on other people. As most of us want to be liked and “fit in” (順應(yīng)), all students then feel that they have to behave well.
Others say that this type of punishment causes students to feel angry with the students who are not behaving well. It destroys trust and good relationships between classmates.
But collective punishment can harm students who want to do the right thing. Teachers at my school say that some students become too disappointed to come to school. They are unhappy because their class gets class detention (課后留校) most days and is known as the “bad group”.
A parent at this same school believes that this type of punishment is useful because it helps teachers to know which students are not behaving well. She thinks that when a class knows they may be given a detention, the students who were doing the wrong thing will own up (承認(rèn)).
Our school’s psychologist (心理學(xué)家), Miriam Koch, says that students who have learning difficulties and keep making trouble in classrooms often have poor social skills. Her opinion is that collective punishment can keep these students away from their classmates. She believes that it is best for teachers to use group rewards (獎(jiǎng)勵(lì)) and clear rules for students behavior to help develop teamwork.
61.What does the underlined word “irate” mean?
A.Silent. B.Angry. C.Lost. D.Worried.
62.In what way is collective punishment good?
A.It gets students to work harder. B.It brings students hearts closer.
C.It helps keep order in the classroom. D.It helps form good teacher-student relationships.
63.How can collective punishment harm students who want to do the right thing?
A.They feel unloved. B.They copy bad behavior.
C.They hate to go to school. D.They avoid seeing people
64.Why does the parent find collective punishment useful?
A.It helps teachers to find troublemakers.
B.It makes students tell on one another.
C.It allows students to know one another better.
D.It gets teachers to help badly-behaved students.
65.What does Miriam Koch think of troublemakers in a classroom?
A.They want to get rewards. B.They have good social skills.
C.They are not clear about rules. D.They may get worse after collective punishment.

十二、多任務(wù)混合閱讀
Is Technology Killing Free Time?
New surveys suggest that the technological tools we use to make our lives easier are killing our free time. We are working longer hours, taking fewer and shorter vacations. And we are more stressed than ever because of the increased use of email, mobile phones and the internet.
People have thought that new laborsaving devices (節(jié)省勞力的設(shè)備) would free them from work and give them more time to enjoy the arts, keep up with news and spend more time with friends and family. However, the tools that were supposed to free us have tied us to our work and study. It would seem that technology almost never does what we expect.
In the past, the lines between work and free time were much clearer. People were out of touch with their jobs once they left their offices. That’s no longer true. In today’s highly competitive job market, workers are expected to put in longer hours and to keep in touch almost at any time through mobile phones, email or other communication devices.
Most people expect instant (即時(shí)的) replies to voice mail and email messages. Even college students have been tied to their desks as more and more people in the college increasingly do their work online.
This isn’t what technology was supposed to be doing for us. New technologies offer all kinds of benefits and chances. But when new tools make life more difficult and stressful rather than easier and more meaningful, then something has gone seriously wrong.
