When the great library of Alexandria was burned, the story goes that one book was saved. But it was not a valuable book, and a poor man bought it for a few coins.
The book wasn’t very interesting, but between its pages there was something very interesting. It was a thin paper on which was written the secret of the touchstone (試金石)! The touchstone was a small pebble (卵石) that could turn any common metal into gold.
The writing explained that it was lying among thousands of other pebbles that looked exactly like it. But the secret was this: The real stone would feel warm, while ordinary pebbles were cold.
So the man sold his house, bought a tent, camped on the seashore, and began testing pebbles. He thought that if he picked up ordinary pebbles and put them down again, he might pick up the same pebble hundreds of times. So, when he felt one that was cold, he threw it into the sea. He spent a whole day doing this but none of them was the touchstone. Yet he went on and on this way. Pick up a pebble. Cold—throw it into the sea. Pick up another. Throw it into the see. The days turned into months and the months into years.
One day, however, about midafternoon, he picked up a pebble and it was warm. He threw it into the sea before he realized what he had done. He was used to throwing each pebble into the sea as soon as he picked it up. So when the one he wanted came along, he still threw it away.
So it is with opportunity (機(jī)遇). Unless we are vigilant, it’s easy to fail to recognize an opportunity when it is at hand. And it’s just as easy to throw it away.
22.Why did the poor man buy the book?
A.Because it was very cheap. B.Because it has great stories.
C.Because there was a secret in the book. D.Because he wanted work by the sea.
23.What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A.Why the book wasn’t interesting. B.How to find the touchstone.
C.What was special about the book. D.What the touchstone looked like.
24.How did the man probably feel when he realized it was the touchstone?
    A.Tired. B.Moved. C.Interested. D.Regretted.
25.What’s the meaning of the underlined word “vigilant” in the last paragraph?
    A.Brave enough. B.Kind enough. C.Careful enough. D.Strong enough.
26.What does the writer want to tell us?
A.Opportunity knocks but once. B.Practice makes perfect.
C.Where there is a will, there is a way. D.Truth comes from practice.

What subject do you worry about the most at school? Many students worry about math. Some students can’t sleep well the day before a math exam. Others may feel very nervous during the exam itself. But there might be a way to make the subject less stressful.
“For people who are anxious about math, posture makes a big difference.” said Erik Peper from San Francisco State University. That’s right—sitting up straight can help you do better on math exams.
Scientists tested 125 college students. They asked them to do a simple math quiz while sitting in a slumped-over (趴倒的) position, or sitting up straight. After the test, 56 percent of students said the exam was easier to do if they were sitting up straight.
Slumping over is a defensive (防御的) posture. It can bring negative memories in the body and brain. This can stop you from thinking clearly, Peper said.
Students who were not nervous about taking the math exam did not necessarily benefit from better posture. But they did find that doing math while slumped over was more difficult, Science Daily reported.
Good posture isn’t just helpful for taking math exams. Athletes, musicians and public speakers can all benefit from better posture. When you feel stressed out, you can also try to sit up straight or stand tall. It can help you feel more positive and focus better.
27.According to the text, which of the following postures is helpful during exams?
A.Lying on the back. B.Putting the head on the desk.
C.Sitting down heavily. D.Sitting up straight.
28.Which of following statements is TRUE about the scientists’ experiment?
A.56 students took part in the experiment. B.The math quiz was very difficult.
C.Students sat in different postures. D.Students all thought the quiz easier than expected.
29.What’s the purpose of the fourth paragraph?
A.To introduce a posture during the math exam.
    B.To compare differences between postures.
C.To explain why slumping over makes exams harder.
D.To give an example of a bad posture during exams.
30.What can we learn from the text?
A.Only a few students worry about math the most.
B.Sitting straight doesn’t have an effect on all the students.
C.A pianist may feel better if he slumps over.
D.We should sit straight all the time in daily life.
31.What’s the main idea of this passage?
A.Posture makes a big difference to your health.
B.How to keep a better posture in an exam?
C.We should always be brave and face challenges directly.
D.A simple change in posture can help improve your math performance.

    Failure helps me grow up
We all know that failure is the mother of success. If we can learn to turn a failure to our advantage, we will learn another secret to success. What failure to us is what sunshine to the trees, without which we cannot arrive at the place where we hope to go. Although failure is annoying, as long as we face it bravely, we will succeed sooner or later.
There was once a time when I had difficulty in math. However hard I tried, my math grade was still bad. Later, I failed to pass an important examination. Before I decided to give up, it was my math teacher who gave me a hand and told me that failure could also teach us a lesson. What she told me encouraged me to face with my math problem bravely. Knowing the importance of failure, I was not afraid of math. Finally, my math grades improved.
Taking my experience into conclusion, everyone can conquer the unavoidable failure in our life so long as we have faith in ourselves. Treasure the failure, and you will win the treasure.
