Every year, over 7.72 trillion kilograms of plastic is washed into the oceans. There are five huge areas in the world’s oceans that are a “soup” of floating (漂浮的) rubbish. One of these areas, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP), is three times as large as France.
Over a year ago, a group called Ocean Cleanup began using a huge floating screen to try to clean up plastic pollution in the ocean. After several failures, the group is? now collecting plastic in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. But the plastic is spreading out over a large area, so it's impossible to collect it piece by piece. So, the Ocean Cleanup had a plan. They got a long floating U-shaped tube with a screen hanging below it. As the tube and screen are pushed by the water and the winds, the U is meant to collect plastic rubbish, making it easy for a ship to collect and remove the plastic. The system uses the power of the wind and ocean, so it doesn’t need fuel.
The group began testing the first version (版本), called “System 001”, last September. But it soon became clear that the screen was just moving with the plastic, not collecting it. Sometimes plastic would wash over the top of the tube. Even worse, System 001 got broken by surging seas and had to be towed to Hawaii for repairs.
But Mr. Slat, who got the idea for the Ocean Cleanup system, sees the project as an experiment, which means a failure is a chance to learn. The team collected and studied lots of information about what worked well and what didn’t. Then they changed the design. In June, an improved version, called “System001/B” was towed back to the GPGP.
The new version has a parachute ( 降落傘) attached to it. This makes the system move slightly slower than the plastic, allowing the plastic to be collected inside, as planned. But this success is still just the beginning of the work of the Ocean Cleanup. They want a better and larger system.
4、What does the author want to show in Paragraph 1?
A.Humans should try to prevent plastic waste.
B.The GPGP is facing different kinds of pollution.

B.To create a ship to collect waste in the oceans.
C.To collect the floating plastic waste piece by piece.
D.To gather up the floating plastic waste in the oceans.
6、What can we know about the “System001”?
A.It was a failure. B.It was a great success.
C.It worked with a parachute. D.It needed to be fueled regularly.
7、What does the underlined word mean in Paragraph 3?
A.vast B.rough C.calm D.peaceful
While facial recognition technology continues to promote many aspects of human life, it’s now being applied to aid the protection of giant pandas, Xinhua News Agency reported on 6 January 2022.
A nature reserve has built an AI-enabled video monitoring system to better protect giant pandas. Installed with 300 infrared (紅外線) cameras, the monitoring system helps ensure the health and safety of 110 wild giant pandas there. It was put into operation two years ago, and has captured numerous photos and videos of pandas engaged in activities such as eating, resting and fighting for mates. It provides scientific data to help us grasp pandas’ living conditions and establish conservation strategies. More importantly, it achieves real-time monitoring of the reserve so that we can discern the threats to the wildlife as early as possible.
A recent study found the facial recognition system can automatically recognize various wild animals caught in infrared cameras, allowing researchers to collect data on giant pandas while staying indoors. It’s shown that by equipping the AI-aided system to retain the filed photos of giant pandas, we obtain a 98% success rate for species recognition. Its success rate of recognizing other wild animals can top 80%. In 2021 alone, this monitoring system captured 2, 896 photos of giant pandas and other rare animals and filmed 3,218 seconds of footage, showcasing the reserve’s sound ecological environment as well as a gradual rise in panda population there.
Head of the reserve’s administration, Liu Xingming, said researchers used the system not only to observe the dynamics and health of the giant panda population but also to learn about changes in the natural surroundings of their habitat. “The monitoring system has enabled systematic, scientific, and intelligent conservation of wildlife,” he added. “However, it is expected to be further improved and optimized in the near future.”
8、What does the underlined word “discern” mean in paragraph 2?
A. Solve. B. Affect. C. Detect. D. Attach.
9、What can be inferred about the new technology from the study?
A. It contributes to species data collection. B. It makes panda population rise rapidly.
C. It precisely recognizes any species. D. It understands pandas’ facial appearance.
10、What is Liu Xingming’s attitude to the facial recognition monitoring system?
A. Critical. B. Ambiguous. C. Objective. D. Conservative.
11、Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Panda Facial Recognition Using Database
B. AI Technology for Better Panda Protection
C. Functions of Facial Recognition Technology

Princess Louisa Inlet, a fjord(峽灣) lying 60 miles from Vancouver, Canada, is a stretch of wilderness. Accessible only by boat or plane, the 6-kilometer-long area is popular with outdoor enthusiasts. Its dense forests are home to a variety of wildlife, including mountain goats, eagles, etc. Now, thanks to a crowdfunding(眾籌)?campaign, the land will be preserved forever for future generations to enjoy.
The chain of events began in June 2019, when three neighboring privately-owned land parcels came up for sale. With several logging(伐木) companies expressing interest, BC Parks Foundation knew it had to do something to save the land. Although it had “zero funds”, the nonprofit foundation agreed to acquire the land for CAN?$3 million(US $2.3 million). Fortunately, the owners gave the nonprofit three months to collect the money.
After much consideration, the nonprofit decided to reach out to the general public through a crowdfunding campaign. To its surprise, money started rolling in from people worldwide. Among the donors was a class of fifth-grade students from Cambridge Elementary School in Surrey, British Columbia, who raised an impressive CAN $1,109 for the cause.
But in spite of the outpouring of support, on August 28, 2019—the day of the sale deadline, the nonprofit was still short of CAN $ 100,000. Just as the officials thought there was no chance of success, a businessman from Vancouver stepped in with the funds. He wrote, “These protected areas are our crown jewels, and I think it’s madness to consider letting them go for short-term economic gain when they always provide much more.”
“It’s just an amazing thing people have done. They together have saved the fjord,” said BC Parks Foundation CEO Andrew Day. “Hopefully we do see more of this kind of thing, in the right places at the right time.”
12、What can we say about Princess Louisa Inlet according to paragraph 1?
A.It is a wild place and not approachable.
B.It is impressive but not easily accessible.
C.It is likely to be at risk of being in ruins.
D.It is especially loved by indoor enthusiasts.
13、What is beyond the expectation of BC Parks Foundation?
A.People’s sincere pray for the Inlet.
B.The sacrifice of logging companies.
C.People’s support for the campaign.
D.The permission to purchase the land.
14、How did the officials feel at first on the day of the sale deadline?
A.Hopeless. B.Cautious. C.Annoyed. D.Serious.
15、Why are Andrew Day’s words mentioned?
A.To introduce the beauty of the wilderness.
B.To stress the significance of the campaign.
C.To show the benefits of exploring the fjord.
D.To evaluate the value of Princess Louisa Inlet.

34、閱讀下面短文,根據(jù)所給情節(jié)進行續(xù)寫,使之構(gòu)成一個完整的故事。
How much do you know about bear? Do bears attack people? The answer is certainly positive. So people in a small city in Colorado were concerned. Why? Last week, a large black bear attacked a family's coop and ate the chickens. It was reported by a local TV station. At the end of the news report, a policeman asked local residents to keep waste, pet food and even birdseed inside, and to report any bear sightings until the animal was found. The policeman also told people to always stay away from the bear when they saw it.
Sam is a 12-year-old boy. Earlier this week, he came to that small city to visit his uncle's family with his mother. His uncle's son, David, was very excited about the bear that had appeared in his neighbor's backyard.
“Sam, there is a bear in our city,” soon after Sam arrived, David told him.
Sam was curious about bears and he had always dreamed of watching one.
“Really?” he asked excitedly.
“Yes. It went into Mrs Brown's backyard last week. It ate all her chickens. But it had run away and I didn't even see it,” said David.
Sam listened with his eyes wide open. “Would it return?” he asked.
“Very probably,” said David, “it would return for food.” At last, he asked Sam.
“Do you want to see the bear?”
Sam immediately nodded. Then he asked, “But how?”
“We can put some food in the backyard. When the bear sees it, he will come in and eat it. But we should be careful. The bear may attack us if he sees us. So we should never make any noise.”
Sam nodded again, still in excitement.
Later that day, the adults all went out, leaving the two boys alone at home. Soon they started to take action.
They put some leftovers from lunch in the backyard. Then they waited behind the window of the kitchen and waited curiously. But an hour passed and they didn’t see a bear. Finally, they got bored.

癮llow sb to do sth”表示“允許…做某事”,故填to park。

Obviously, he saw the leftover. He pushed open the door and came in. He then started enjoying the food. So curious was Sam that he unconsciously stepped out of the house in order to watch the bear closely. It seemed as if the bear were safe enough to be close to.
When the bear looked up, he saw Sam. At the sight of the fierce bear, Sam felt so scared that his throat tightened and his knees felt weak. So was David, who froze with terror, too scared to move an inch. Just at the moment, their parents, together with the police, rushed in, shooting the bear. So ashamed were they that they could feel the blood rush to their face. They apologized to their parents, who forgave them finally, reminding them to be always aware of such dangerous animals as the bear.
