In the Pascucci household, putting up Christmas lights was always a big day of celebration and a family affair. Every year, Anthony Pascucci, the male head of the family, and his older sister, Connie Pascucci, and Anthony’s son, Anthony Jr., and daughter, Sara, pitched in it.

One day Sara received an unsigned letter which read “Take your Christmas lights down! It’s Valentine’s Day!!!” Sara was shocked and angry. She decided to post the letter. “I wanted to remind people that we all had a tough year and people should be a little more caring toward each other,” she says.
“I know what it feels like to lose someone and not want to put their things away. It’s very hard,” one man commented. And something strange began to happen. Sara was driving back from work one day when she noticed that Christmas lights were appearing—or reappearing—on neighbors’ houses. The mystery had a sweet explanation: Her neighbors had gotten together and decided, collectively, to hang their lights back up and turn them back on in honor of Sara’s father.
“To see the lights and the block lit up again,” Sara said, “it touched my heart.” A few weeks later, Sara decided she was ready to take down the lights. Sara said it was hard to pack them away—“but not as hard as I think it would have been if we hadn’t experienced all that support and love.”

Across the gardens of Britain, people are building sheds. People have gone crazy about sheds. The Timber Trade Federation reports that in October, the last month for which statistics were available, imports of softwood were 34% higher than a year earlier. With stocks (庫(kù)存) running low, what wood is available is quickly sold out.
A garden shed used to be mostly a place to store tools, or a place to discuss how to grow flowers and enjoy tea and snacks while the rain falls outside, according to Michael Rand, an expert gardener. But the creative brain-worker has long put it to more productive use. Roald Dahl and Dylan Thomas wrote in sheds. George Bernard Shaw had one in his Hertfordshire garden that faced the sun.
Besides growing flowers, the sheds now being built are also often intended for work. However, they are grander than the ones those pioneer shed-writers used. Green Retreats, which mostly builds garden offices, says that overall sales on building sheds grew by 113% between 2019 and 2020. Larger and fancier structures are especially popular.
This has an important impact on cities. Urban scholars like Richard Florida and Edward Glaeser are busy trying to work out whether the rise in home-working that has occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic will continue when the virus declines. If it does, many service jobs in cities, from waiters to taxi drivers, will disappear. Public transport systems will struggle. The value of city-centre housing will drop. The shed boom makes that outcome more likely.
A white-collar worker who has tried to work from the kitchen table for the past nine months might be keen to return to the office. A worker who has a beautiful garden shed with Wi-Fi will not hope so. Joel Bird, who builds personalized sheds, is certain that his customers expect a long-term change in their working habits. “They don’t consider home-working to be temporary,” he says. “They’re spending too much money on sheds.”

Ariel Novoplansky, an ecologist in Israel, set up an experiment among pea plants to study how they communicate with each other.
In the experiments Ariel put the pea plants in rows of containers. The center plant in the row was the target. The pea plants had been grown with two main roots. On one side, each pea plant had one root in its own pot and the other reaching into a neighbor’s pot. The central plant connected to its closest neighbor, which connected to another neighbor, and so on down the line. On the other side, all the plants kept their roots in their own pots, unconnected to their neighbors.
With everything ready, the ecologist created a dryness for the central target plant, which had quickly closed up its leaf pores (氣孔) to save water. Amazingly, the connected plants on one side gradually closed up their leaf pores, even though only one of them had experienced real dryness. On the other side, with unconnected roots pea chain, all their pores stayed open. This means the warning signal didn’t travel from the stressed plants leaves through the air, but only from its roots through the soil.
It’s possible that plants are just eavesdropping (偷聽(tīng)) even if the damaged plant didn’t mean to send signals to them. Maybe the damaged plant leaks certain chemicals and nearby roots could sense those signals. But the plants with connected roots that weren’t dried out passed on the drought signals to their neighbors too, which means simple eavesdropping probably isn’t the answer. They seem to be having a real conversation, picking up information on one side and sharing it with a neighbor on the other.
The benefit to a plant that receives this information is pretty clear. But what’s the benefit to sending a danger signal to your neighbor? Remember, your neighbor may actually be you.
