Last weekend, my kids along with a few other kids from the neighborhood volunteered to help me wash my car. My 10-year-old daughter came up with the idea of washing other people’s cars as well. It was pretty hot outside. She further wanted to give juice for a low cost but not free. I felt happy and decided to help her.
She asked me, “What if we make this ‘a(chǎn) smile car wash’, mom?” I couldn’t hold back my tears and encouraged her and other kids to go inside the house and come up with ideas. While I kept myself busy in drying the car, the kids walked up to me with a board of beautiful signs of smiles. They had “Free Car Wash” written on it and the theme of their exercise was “Smile”. It was pretty natural to see a team of kids 5 to 11 years with the task to do something for others.
All that seemed natural and came right from their heart. Nothing seemed to matter to them: their playtime, and then heat outside — they just wanted to help and do something nice in the community!
I helped them make some fresh juice and brought out some waste materials to help clean cars. Passers-by were amazed and one even shouted at them saying “Good kids”. One of them even tried giving them 5 dollars, which they refused. A pretty heart-warming scene!
The following weekend, I saw the idea of the week, the theme of which was “Global Kindness”. I was moved by such wonderful and loving souls. They made me smile!

A. The mother
B. One of the passers-by

A. She was moved by her daughter’s kindness.
B. She felt sorry for those passers-by in hot weather.
C. She was sorry for not helping the kids.
D. She thought of too much hardship of the kids.
3. Why did the kids want to wash others’ cars for free?
A. They wanted to earn money.
B. They were asked to do that by their teacher.
C. They just wanted to help and do something nice in the community.
D They wanted to exercise in smiling.
4. Which of the following did NOT the writer do to help the kids?
A. She supported the kids’ ideas.

The Great Fire of London started in the very early hours of September 1666. In four days it destroyed more than three-quarters of the old city, where most of the houses were wooden and close together. One hundred thousand people became homeless, but only a few lost their lives.
The fire started on Sunday morning in the house of the King’s baker(面包師)in Pudding Lane. The baker, with his wife and family, was able to get out through a window in the roof. A strong wind blew the fire from the bakery(面包房)into a small hotel next door. Then it spread quickly into Thames Street. That was the beginning.
By eight o’clock three hundred houses were on fire. On Monday nearly a kilometer of the city was burning along the River Thames. Tuesday was the worst day. The fire destroyed many well-known buildings, old St Paul’s and the Guildhall among them.
Samuel Pepys, the famous writer, wrote about the fire. People threw their things into the river. Many poor people stayed in their houses until the last moment. Birds fell out of the air because of the heat.
The fire stopped only when the King finally ordered people to destroy hundreds of buildings in the path of the fire. With nothing left to burn, the fire became weak and finally died out.
After the fire, Christopher Wren, the architect(建筑師), wanted a city with wider streets and fine new houses of stone. In fact, the streets are still narrow; but he did build more than fifty churches, among them new St Paul’s.
The fire caused great pain and loss, but after it London was a better place: a city for the future and not just of the past.

A. Because Pepys was among those putting out the fire.
B. Because Pepys also wrote about the fire.
C. To show that poor people suffered most.

12 Which of the following were reasons for the rapid spread of the big fire?

Then it spread quickly into Thames Street.(大風(fēng)把火從面包店(面包房)吹到了隔壁的一家小旅館。

Ten-year-old Orion Jean has always known that kindness is important. He often practiced it by volunteering with his family. But last year, after entering the National Kindness Speech Contest, he became crazy about it. Now he works to spread kindness everywhere through projects that help others.
After a teacher told him about the speech competition, Orion had only 24 hours to write, memorize, and record his speech. In it, he talked about the importance of kindness—especially right now, when many are facing difficulties from the COVID-19 and dealing with unfair treatment.
“Kindness is like spreading hugs around the world to those who need it and those who may not know they need it,” Orion said. He encouraged listeners to join him in “the race of kindness” by doing small, kind acts for others.
Orion’s speech won the competition. He used his $500 prize to fund his first Race to Kindness project, a toy drive for a local children’s hospital. He collected 619 toys. After that, Orion wanted to make an even bigger impact.
Working with a nonprofit, he packed meal bags for people in need. He included a kind message for each receiver Orion also organized several events in his community. In all, he collected more than 100,000 meals!
Orion believes that everyone wins this race. He says, “A kind act can be something small, but it can make a big difference. You can write a thank-you note to a worker or leave flowers on a neighbor’s doorstep.” “If you’re kind to someone else, it can make their day brighter and inspire that person to be kind to somebody else. And then it just grows and grows, and it can make the world a better place.” He adds.

Storytelling has caught the human imagination for thousands of years. People everywhere have told stories to amuse, to teach, to remember, and just to pass the time. People started telling stories long before writing was invented. ____16____ But people all over the world still tell one another stories out loud. A person who can tell a good story nearly always finds listeners.
Before people developed writing, storytelling was the most important way to pass along information. Anything a culture wanted to protect — its beliefs, its history, and its traditions — had to be told out loud. Each generation would tell the culture’s stories to the next. ____17____
Knowledge passed on in this method is called the spoken tradition. Even cultures that know how to write still pass along some information in this way.
____18____ In other cultures only special storytellers were trusted to do this important job. A culture’s best storytellers had good memories. They could also make the stories very interesting, so people would listen and remember them. Sometimes people would sing the stories or tell them in the form of poems. ____19____
However, stories told aloud change over time as different people tell them. A storyteller might change a story in order to make it better. Or a teller may simply not remember all the details of a story. Unlike written stories, the spoken tradition is not created by any one person. ____20____
Sometimes the stories are collected and written down long after they have been created.
A. In this way the stories were passed along.
B. In some cultures everyone would pass along the stories.
C. Songs and poems can both make stories easier to remember.
D. Instead, a whole culture helps shape the changing stories throughout history.
E. Today stories are also written down in books and acted out in movies, TV shows, and plays.
F. Today we aren’t telling stories any more.
G. The storyteller is a special occupation (職業(yè)).

A worried student,
Li Hua
【答案】Dear headmaster,
I am a student from Class 1, Senior 1. I am writing to you to share my views on the shocking waste of water, electricity and paper in our school.
When you walk around our school, you can easily find lights and computers still on after class, water running all the time and paper used only one side. All these result in too much waste.
It is immoral and unnecessary to let waste continue without noticing. For one thing, ending such waste can save lots of money each year, which in return can be used to help many poor students buy some necessary school supplies.
