一、閱讀理解
With its low cost of living and pleasant climate, it is no wonder that 17% of Alabama's population is over the age of 65.In that case, some of Alabama's small towns may be an excellent choice for those seeking peace, and a sense of community.
Cullman

Lying in northern Alabama, at the foot of the most southerly part of the Appalachian Mountains, is Cullman. It is picturesque and known for a heavy German influence from early 18th-century settlers. Residents can take part in the city's yearly beer festival and Christmas market events.
Jasper

Jasper is a small, walkable town in the northwest of Alabama. Residents can easily access nearby state parks that allow hunting and fishing. Most notable of these parks is Bankhead National Forest, 14 miles north of the city. The forest allows for hunting, fishing, and camping.
Fairhope

Fairhope is home to a charming and quiet downtown center and lively arts community. Flowers line its quaint streets, and 100,000 visitors attend the yearly Fairhope Arts & Crafts Festival. Fairhope has excellent healthcare organizations. Thomas Hospital ranks exceptionally high for heart attack care and is important to people who stop performing their work because they are too old in the area.
Eufaula

Known for its well-preserved history, it is home to the second-largest historic district in the state. Also worth noting is Eufaula's easy access to nature. Residents and visitors enjoy boating and other water activities on the Chattahoochee River. Lake Eufaula is yet another excellent spot for fishing. Outside of town is the Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge, a wildlife-rich habitat suitable for bird and animal viewing and hiking.

Walker, a farmer, at 55, was the oldest of the competitors and finished third in this year's 1,000 km race across the grassland—The Mongol Derby.
The Mongol Derby, described by the organizers, as the world’s toughest horse endurance(耐力) race, began in 2009 as an event held every year but was cancelled in 2021 and 2022.
Competitors race between checkpoints 35km apart, where they change horses. They spend nights at one of 28 stations, set up their own camp or enjoy the hospitality(好客) of friendly Mongolian families.
Walker was an hour ahead of his rivals(對手) as the race entered its eighth day but dealt with a time punishment because his horse had a high heart rate during one of the regular checks which make sure that the animals were healthy. “I was in the lead for a long time but I had a bad vet check,” Walker said. “They check the heart rate of your horse to see if it is above 56 beats per minute. I picked a horse that had a bit of a problem.”
Walker said he had gone to Mongolia to “give it a go” but realized that he stood a chance of winning after teaming up with Patrick Heffron, a competitor from Ireland. "The horses are quite wild. I got bucked(顛) off three times. I fell off in a hole,”he said. “You’re going along and you suddenly disappear. You have to hang on to your horse for dear life or it goes off.”
Heffron met Walker as they went out for the race. He said it was important to form a team, mainly because falling off alone means that there is no one to help you recover your horse. “It’s also a bloody long way to talk to yourself,” Heffron said, “Neither of us had goals to win this race in advance but we realized: 'We're in front.' So we pushed.”
4、What can we learn about the Mongol Derby?
A.It provides accommodations in hotels.
B.It allows competitors to change horses.
C.It requires competitors be young and strong.
D.It has been held every two years since 2021.
5、Why was Walker behind his rivals at last?
A.His horse was in poor condition.
B.He was punished for breaking rules.
C.He failed to finish the race in given time.
D.He got injured when he fell off the horse.
6、Which of the following best describes Walker?
A.Creative. B.Confident. C.Warm-hearted. D.Strong-willed.
7、What does the story tell us?
A.Success is hard won. B.Practice makes perfect
C.Many hands make light work. D.Everything comes to those who wait.
Are you frightened of clowns(小丑)? You are not alone. Coulrophobia, or the fear of clowns, is a widely recognized phenomenon. We set out to discover the reasons people are frightened by clowns, and to understand the psychology(心理) behind this. To do this, we designed a question form to look at how many people suffer from coulrophobia and how much they are afraid of it. The test was completed by a group of 987 people aged between 18 and 77.
More than half the volunteers (53.5%) said they were frightened of clowns at least to some degree, with 5% saying they were “extremely afraid' of them. We also discovered coulrophobia drops with age. Interestingly, we found the final explanation, of having had a fearful personal experience with a clown, had the lowest level of agreement. This shows that life experience alone is not a satisfying explanation for why people are afraid of them.
In contrast, negative(消極的) description of clowns in popular culture was a much stronger contributing factor towards coulrophobia. This is understandable because most famous clowns in books and films are designed to be terrible- such as Pennywise, the creepy(毛骨悚然的) clown from Stephen King's 1986 novel It.
In fact the strongest factor we identified was hidden emotional signs suggesting that for many people, a fear of clowns comes from not being able to see their facial expressions due to their make-up. We cannot see their “true” faces and cannot understand their emotional purpose. So, for example, we don’t know whether they have a frown(皺眉) or a furrowed brow(眉頭緊鎖), which would show anger. Not being able to be aware of what a clown is thinking or what they might do next makes some of us on edge when we are around them.
8、What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A.The result of Coulrophobia test. B.A drop in Coulrophobia.
C.Explanations of Coulrophobia. D. Reactions from volunteers.
9、What is a clown like in popular culture?
A.Silly. B.Funny. C.Understanding. D.Horrible.
10、What does the underlined word “on edge” mean in paragraph 4?
A.Angry B.Interested. C.Nervous. D.Proud
11、Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.A clown's makeup can be uneasy B.This is why we're afraid of clowns
C. Coulrophobia is no laughing matter D. This is how coulrophobia comes about
At the South African nature preserve where Miya Warrington and his team study Cape ground squirrels(松鼠), the hottest daily temperature has increased by about 2.5 ℃ in just 18 years. The animals have gradually developed typical methods to deal with the hot weather, says Warrington, an ecologist at the University of Manitoba.
For example, lying flat on the ground in a special pose(姿勢) helps the squirrels remove heat from their less furry undersides. They also take shady breaks under their bushy tails, which curl(卷) above their heads like tiny beach umbrella When it’s really too hot, they hide into their holes to cool off. But Warrington warns that, even with all these choices for keeping cool, they still could be unable to go through the heat because of such a rapid climate change.
That huge pressure could be why their bodies have begun to change shape, Warrington says. She found that, over the course of just under twenty years, the squirrels' large back feet already, which may help reduce heat, have grown relative to their body sizes by about 11 percent. Meanwhile, their spine(脊柱) lengths have become about 6 percent shorter.
And the Cape ground squirrel isn't the only animal that appears to be shape-shifting because of climate change. The researchers tried to decide whether bird body sizes become smaller as climate change has driven hotter weather in areas throughout North America. As scientists collect more evidence that many species’(物種) bodies are having unobvious changes over a short period of time, it remains unclear whether they are able to keep ahead of sharply rising temperatures and how close they may get to a breaking point.
To record this change in so many species over such a short period really shows that there is something global affecting all these animals-and climate change is what makes sense.
12、How do Cape ground squirrels deal with rising hot weather?
A.They get rid of their fur underside. B.They stay where they are
C.They use their tails as an umbrella. D.They come out of the hot hole
13、What is the result of climate change for squirrels?
A.Their body shape has changed. B. They have less pressure.
C.Their patience is running out. D.Their strength is weakened.
14、What are the researchers unsure about?
A.Rate of temperature change. B.Features of climate change.
C.Habitat of North American birds. D. Limits of animal adaptation to heat.
15、What conclusion can we draw from the last paragraph?
A.The number of species is dropping quickly.
B.Climate change has little influence on species.
C.Animals play an important role in climate change.
D.Climate change is responsible for animals' changes.

My friend gave me a lovely, colourful little bird for Christmas-at the time, it seemed strange. It was something I would never have chosen for myself and never expected him to give me.
The bird was biting(咬) at first, but she quickly became the sweetest, warmest, most beautiful little creature, and she brightened up every day. I looked forward every morning to her crawling(爬) under my nightclothes for a warm hug and a chirp(唧唧喳喳) in my ear.
A few months ago, I never would have imagined myself owning a bird, but now she had her little self firmly around my heart.
A couple days ago, she seemed a little off, not quite herself. She was struggling to fly. So, I brought her to the vet(獸醫(yī)), and she was much more ill than I could have imagined It was touch and go, but she made it through the night. After a couple days of slow improvement, when it was starting to look like she was almost out of the woods, we lost her quite suddenly.
I broke down. I cried all the way to the vet with a suitcase to collect her little body. This tiny, chirpy bird had become such a huge part of my life, and suddenly she was gone.
When I walked into the vet’s, I saw a woman with a girl, who must have been around 12 years old. She held a cute little bird in her arms. She kept petting her bird and looking at it gently. I could see that she was also someone who loved birds like me.

②段落主題題。根據(jù)后文And if the result of adult work is the produced "product", for the child the result of the game is new knowledge about the world and a better understanding of how the world works. Interacting with other children during the game, the child develops his own style of behavior and communication.(如果成人工作的結(jié)果是生產(chǎn)出來的“產(chǎn)品”,那么對孩子來說,游戲的結(jié)果是關(guān)于世界的新知識和對世界如何運(yùn)作的更好理解。 E. The game is a way to be closer, to feel the support, care and love of parents.(游戲是一種拉近距離的方式,感受父母的支持、關(guān)心和愛)。符合語境,故選F。
⑤聯(lián)系下文題。根據(jù)后文If, so, the child feels nervous and confused and may even think that he is doing something wrong and does not know how to play.(如果是這樣,孩子會感到緊張和困惑,甚至可能認(rèn)為自己做錯了什么,不知道怎么玩。)推知,上文提到了在聯(lián)合游戲中父母的負(fù)面做法。故G. 39、答案:
The vet called me over to the counter. He told me about the bird's illness and how it died. Then he took my little bird out and gently put it in my suitcase. She was placed in a felt bag with a flower tied to it with a ribbon. I couldn't stop crying when I saw this scene. It seemed like a part of me was missing without my feathered friend. I settled my bill, while wiping tears off my cheeks.
When I turned to leave, I was surprised to see the girl standing in front of me. She looked me right in the eyes with a look of sincere compassion and asked me if I wanted a hug. I broke down on her shoulder, because that's exactly what I needed. It was the kindest gesture that I'd never expected. In that moment, I realized that although my little bird was gone, the love she had brought into my life would always be with me. Thank you, young girl. You warmed my heart so much today.
