【原文】An 89-year-old man from the state of Rhode Island has reached a goal he spent nearly a lifetime thinking about.
As a young man in Vienna, Austria, Manfred Steiner followed his mother’s advice and entered the University of Vienna in 1951, where he earned a medical degree four years later. Then he moved to the United States. At the University of North Carolina, Steiner established a research program and directed it until he retired from medicine in 2000.
Steiner found medical research pleasing, but it was not quite the same as his interest in physics. At age 70, he started taking undergraduate classes in Brown University. By 2007, he had earned enough credits to join the doctoral program. One of his Physics professors said,“Steiner was serious about the subject and worked hard. What is really true about him is that he always sticks to his dream.”
Steiner now hopes to assist the professors in Brown with their research.
After the university published the story about Steiner on its website, people across the U.S. contacted him for advice on how to go after their dreams in life. His advice is: Do what you love to do!

The Omicron Covid variant has been found to multiply about 70 times quicker than the original and Delta versions of coronavirus in tissue samples taken from the bronchus(支氣管), the main tubes from the windpipe to the lungs, in laboratory experiments that could help explain its rapid transmission.
The study, by a team from the University of Hong Kong, also found that the new variant grew 10 times slower in lung tissue, which the authors said could be an indicator of lower disease severity.
Michael Chan, who led the work, said the result needed to be interpreted with caution because severe disease is determined not only by how quickly the virus replicates(復(fù)制) but also by a person’s immune response. “It is also noted that by infecting many more people, a very infectious virus may cause more severe disease and death even though the virus itself may be less pathogenic(致病的),” he said. “Therefore, taken together with our recent studies showing that the Omicron variant can partially escape immunity from vaccines and past infection, the overall threat from the Omicron variant is likely to be very significant.”
Jeremy Kamil, an associate professor of microbiology and immunology at Louisiana State University Health Shreveport, pointed out that Delta, which turned out to be more pathogenic, showed a similar pattern of replicating more slowly in the lungs. “These authors found Omicron replicates fantastically well--even far better than either Delta or the original virus--in bronchial tissue,” Kamil said. “This could in some ways contribute to an advantage in transmission between people.”
Kamil added, “Of course, a huge component of Omicron’s transmissibility in real life is going to be its potential to escape neutralising antibodies that protect against infection in the first place. It’s very likely spreading well even between vaccinated people, especially those who haven’t recently gotten a booster shot.”
The findings, together with other recent work showing Omicron infects cells more readily, add to an emerging picture that the variant may be intrinsically more transmissible in addition to escaping existing immunity.
24. What is the kind of the passage?
A. A news report. B. A science fiction.
C. A health guide. D. A medicine advertisement.
25. What could Jeremy Kamil agree with?
A. We should take the result seriously.
B. Omicron may cause more severe disease and death.
C. Both Omicron and Delta grew slowly in the lungs.
D. Those who have gotten a booster shot won’t be infected.
26. What can we learn about Omicron?
A. It is a new variant of Delta.
B. Delta is less pathogenic than it.
C. Vaccinated people needn’t worry about it.
D. It may pose a great threat to people’s health.
27. According to the passage, which of the following may cause Omicron’s transmissibility?
A. That many people haven’t been vaccinated.
B. That many people refused to wears masks in public.
C. That Omicron infects lung cells much more quickly.
D. That existing immunity plays a poor part in fighting Omicron.
【答案】24. A 25. C 26. D 27. D

Mr. Pagano is watching a video of a polar bear swimming after a seal. The seal escapes! The bear meets another bear. They sniff at each other and then go separate ways. What makes this video so unusual is that it’s from the point of view of the polar bear. A camera was previously put around the bear’s neck by Mr. Pagano’s research team with the aim to find out what polar bears will need to survive in their changing habitat.
According to scientists, polar bears are endangered because of Earth’s warming climate, which is shrinking the ice pack that floats on the Arctic Ocean. The ice pack goes through a yearly cycle. In the fall and winter, the ice pack grows southward, stretching toward North America, Asia, and Europe. By the end of winter, the ice pack lies over shallower waters near land, where seals live. The polar bears hunt along the edge of that ice, eating seals in the spring and early summer before the ice over shallow waters melts. It’s how the bears fatten up for the next winter.
In the past few decades, the ice pack has started to grow later in the fall. As a result, it isn’t as thick and starts to melt and break up earlier in the spring. That gives the bears less sea ice for hunting and forces some of them to swim farther to move between land and ice habitats. Studies show that, in places where the ice has been breaking up earlier for decades, the number of bears is going down, and their overall health is getting worse. Scientists want to know if bears are still finding enough to eat and how far they have to travel, or swim, to find food.
Using the GPS collars, the researchers confirmed that some bears are swimming long distances. Of 52 bears, 20 took a total of 50 long-distance swims, each one a journey of more than 30 miles. Are the long-distance travels harming their chances for survival? If polar bears are going to survive in the warming Arctic, humans may need to act right now. With the work of scientists like Mr. Pagano, silver linings will finally cut open the darkness.
28. What probably is Mr. Pagano?
A. A climate scientist. B. A zoologist. C. A GPS engineer. D. An ice observer.
29. The video is special because ________.
A. it is made by professional animal researchers B. its aim is to trace bear behaviors in North Pole
C. it is filmed by a camera attached to a polar bear D. it uses hi-tech GPS to study polar bears’ habitats
30. What makes polar bears in the Arctic endangered?
A. The shrinking shallow waters. B. The decreasing number of seals.
C. The long-distance travels for habitats. D. The changed yearly cycle of ice packs.
31. According to the author, Mr. Pagano’s research is ________.
A. hopeful B. limited C. complete D. questionable
【答案】28. B 29. C 30. D 31. A

Most people around the world are right-handed. This also seems to be true in history. In 1799, scientists studied works of art made at different times from 1,500 B. C. to the 1950s. Most of the people shown in these works are right-handed, so the scientists guessed that right-handedness has always been common through history. Today, only about 10% to 15% of the world’s population is left-handed.
Why are there more right-handed people than left-handed ones?Scientists now know that a person’s two hands each have their own jobs. Most people use hands to find things or hold things. The right hand is used to work with things. This is because of the different work of the two sides of the brain. The right side of the brain, which makes a person’s hands and eyes work together, controls the left hand. The left side of the brain, which controls the right hand, is the centre for thinking and doing problems. These findings show that more artists should be left-handed, and studies have found that left-handedness is twice as common among artists as among people in other jobs.
No one really knows what makes a person become right-handed instead of left-handed. Scientists have found that almost 40% of the people become left-handed because their main brain is damaged when they are born. However, this doesn’t happen to everyone, so scientists guess there must be another reason why people become left-handed. One idea is that people usually get right-handed from their parents.
Though right-handedness is more common than left-handedness, people no longer think left-handed people are strange or unusual.

閱讀下面材料, 根據(jù)其內(nèi)容和所給段落開頭語續(xù)寫兩段, 使之構(gòu)成一篇完整的短文。
After a very meaningful conversation with my dad about the old days, we came up with an object that we both remembered clearly. It was my very first bicycle. My mind told me I got it when I was seven, who was cheated to ride it for fifty yards alone the first time I tried!
My dad put together all the small pieces of the bicycle from a beautiful material that he called, “Your own car.” Of course I knew he had some magical ability, but I didn’t think he could make such an awesome object. He added the seat and the pedals (踏板) so that I would not have any problems. My dad recalled the bicycle was the smallest he could find while I remember how huge it was. I was so afraid of it and there was no way that I was going to control that monster-sized material. The bicycle was left in my backyard as a decoration for a month because I refused to ride it. Honestly, I was scared to try it.
After a month, my dad gave me a lecture to teach me what being a man was all about. I was finally determined to try it. My dad was proud of me and I felt very manly. He and I went to the park to see what we could do there.
The park was empty when we arrived. I had no doubt that my dad told everybody not to be there because we had to use it. I felt sorry for other people, but I was proud to have such an omnipotent (全能的) person as my dad.
We found a smooth and open space. My dad was holding the back part of the seat to make sure I didn’t fell. He promised me that I was not going to fall because he would be running right behind, holding the bicycle.

Then he started to teach me how to keep my center of gravity in balance. I learned the skills my father taught me, and repeated the practice several times.
I started to pedal and the bicycle moved. The bicycle moved when I pressed on the pedals. I rode for some distance and I felt my body was in balance. I felt that I could ride independently slowly, while my father was cheering for me. Finally I could ride a bike just like a free bird flying happily in the air.
