【原文】
M: Today I’m going to tell you about local food and eating out. Well, most of us buy our food in supermarkets these days but we’re very lucky to have a wonderful market here. It was at first in front of the bank but at the beginning of the twentieth century it was moved to a place by the river. When the new shopping center was built in the 1960s, it found a home under the two-storey car park where it still is.
The market is now open six days a week. From Tuesday to Saturday you can buy fresh fruit and vegetables as well as various sea foods. But on Sunday, you’ll find a different market, where local people sell what they have made—things like bags, cards, clothes. During the weekdays, there are shops selling old furniture.
People often ask what our local dish is. Our fish is good of course but there isn’t one particular dish that stands out. What we do have is an apple cake that isn’t really made anywhere else. There’s a new cafe: Barton’s, which bakes them fresh and serves them with homemade ice cream.
Now every morning local fishermen sell their day’s catch. They’ve been doing that for long but the harbor looks very different from a few years ago. Most of the restaurants used to be at the far end, but that part was redeveloped and the restaurants have to move to the other end.

My parents had been married less than two years when my dad was diagnosed with ALS. Making a decision regarding whether or not to start a family was difficult at the time, but due to their faith and positive outlook, they chose to do so. Had they not shared the same optimism, my older brother John would not be here, and I would not be writing this today. To say that I am thankful for their decision is an understatement. My dad has had a long battle with ALS and is still fighting after 26 years.
As a child, my parents did everything in their power to keep things as normal as possible for my brother and me. Unfortunately, I have very few memories of my dad when he was still able to walk because of how young I was when he lost that ability. However, I can confidently say that as a girl, my childhood felt completely normal. Our friends came over a lot. John and I were very involved in sports, and my parents were at every game.
ALS isn’t just a deadly disease — it is incurable. Most patients do not live even close to 26 years like my father has been able to. ALS is also a lonely disease, for both the patients and caregivers, as they go through hardships those around them will rarely understand. My mom is his primary caregiver, and my brother and I help out as much as we can. She is a remarkable mother and wife, the backbone of our family, and none of us would be here without her.
Dad is the strongest person I know. He has overcome his physical limitations due to how strong he is mentally. Every day is a battle, and every day he fights hard. He truly believes every day is a gift. Some days are worse than others, but he would rarely ley you know. It takes a certain kind of faith, will, ambition, and strength to handle such a desperate diagnosis, and he has never faltered (退縮).

Buildings, pollution, poor soil, insects, and even car crashes can add to tree loss. However, between 2016 and 2021, the city of Seattle in Washington state was reported to have lost about 255 hectares of tree covering, for which climate change was blamed. Then came the driest summer on Seattle’s record books in 2022. The drier conditions and hotter temperatures have left many trees with brown leaves, naked branches, and extreme seeding. These are all signs of tree stress.
According to Nicholas Johnson, a tree expert for Seattle City Parks, if this warming climate continues we are going to have a lot of trees die. Just like people, under the heat trees get weak.
Researchers from France and Australia studied the effect of hotter temperatures and less rain on more than 3,100 trees and plants in 164 cities across 78 countries. They found about half the trees in the cities were experiencing climate conditions beyond their limits. They also found that by 2050 nearly all trees planted in Australian cities will not survive.
It’s not the gradual change but these extreme swings of too much water, too little water, too much wind, and terrible storms that are going to cause these rapid changes. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina destroyed about 10 percent of the trees in New Orleans, Louisiana. And in 2021, Hurricane Ida uprooted many new tree plantings.
To settle the problem of tree loss, non-native trees, have been brought to cities for some time. In the city of Bellevue, Washington, experts are growing different kinds of trees specifically for climate change. On city grounds, they are planting baby giant sequoias, just a few centimeters tall. The giant sequoias are not native to the Pacific Northwest area. But the trees can deal with the lack of rain and insects. Once these trees are established, they grow incredibly fast. Having many different kinds and ages of trees is important to keeping urban forests alive.
“Life always finds a way,” said Nicholas Johnson. “And in Seattle, people are helping life find a way.”
28.What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A.Natural reasons for tree loss. B.The terrible climate in Seattle in recent years.
C.The bad condition of trees in Seattle. D.The signs of tree stress.
29.What is endangering the trees in Australia cities?
A.Buildings. B.Pollution.
C.Car crashes. D.Extreme climate.
30.How do tree experts solve the problem of tree death?
A.By improving planting methods. B.By changing the kinds of trees.
C.By treating trees as babies. D.By improving the soil quality.
31.Which is Nicholas Johnson’s attitude to the future of trees in cities?
A.Positive. B.Negative. C.Doubtful. D.Uninterested.

Scientists may have found a way to reduce shortage of type O blood. Type O is the kind of blood that hospitals most often need. What the researchers are testing is an easier way to make type O blood out of other kinds of blood.
There are four main kinds of blood. Most people are born with one of these four: Type A, Type B, Type AB or Type O. Type O can be safely given to anyone. So it is commonly used when a person is injured or sick and has to have blood.
Type O is the most common blood group. But the supplies of it available in hospitals and blood banks are usually limited. This is because of the high demand for it. Type O blood is used in emergencies when there is no time to identify the patient’s blood type.
Giving A, B or AB to someone with a different blood type, including O, can cause a bad reaction by the person’s defense system. Their immune system can reject the blood. This immune reaction can be deadly.
The differences among blood types are linked to whether or not red blood cells contain certain kinds of sugar molecules (分子). These molecules are found on the surface of the cells. They are known as antigens (抗原), these antigens are found with Type A, B and AB blood but not with Type O.
More than twenty-five years ago, scientists found that the antigens could be removed to create what they called universal-type cells. They could be removed with chemicals called enzymes (酶). But large amounts of enzymes were required to make the change.
Doctor Henrik Clausen of the University of Copenhagen in Denmark led the study. The next step, he says, is to complete safety tests. The team is working with the American company ZymeQuest to test the new method. If it meets safety requirements and is not too costly, it will become a widely used life-saving tool to increase the supply of universal blood.
32.How do scientists deal with the problem of lacking type O blood?
A.Make type O blood out of other kinds of blood.
B.Make the most of the present type O blood.
C.Develop new ways of using type O blood.
D.Appeal to more people to donate type O blood.
33.What make people have different kinds of blood?
A.Sugar molecules in red blood cells. B.Peopled different living conditions.
C.The variety of people’s cells and genes. D.People’s various immune systems.
34.What can we infer from the text?
A.Antigens could not be removed to create universal blood.
B.A Danish company wanted to involve itself in studying blood.
C.Type O blood and Type AB blood can be safely given to anyone.
D.The new method is not safe enough to be put into use in hospitals now.
35.What is the best title for the text?
A.Four Different Kinds of Blood. B.A New Way to Make Type O Blood.
C.The Latest Research on Blood Type. D.Find the Proper Type of Blood.
【答案】32.A????33.A????34.D????35.B

【答案】
I’m glad to receive your letter. Thank you for your concern about the heavy smog in North China. Now I’d like to tell you something about it.
Since the winter last year, the smog has occurred a lot of times, which has brought much inconvenience to our daily life and done great harm to people’s health. Many traffic accidents have happened just because of the heavy smog weather. In addition, quite a lot of flights have to be put off and a great number of people have to stay at home to avoid the poisonous air. What’s worse, many people have suffered from bad coughs, sore throats and other serious diseases caused by the smog. Personally, I think not only the government but also everyone should try to make a difference. I strongly approve of the idea that we can try to drive less and buy environmentally-friendly products. Only when everyone has the awareness can we have cleaner air.
Hoping to hear from you soon and share your good ideas.

【答案】
Immediately, the class became excited. Some could hardly wait to tell their classmates about their holiday trips, eyes shining and faces glowing with joy. Those who hadn’t been anywhere bombarded them with inquiries. Enormous joy welled up in every corner of the classroom. Obviously confused about the sudden noisy situation, Mark turned to me for explanations in written words. Surprisingly, my explanation put a smile on his face. “Any volunteer to share your story?” asked Ms. Green, whose words I set down on paper for Mark.
Then Mark rose from his chair and walked onto the platform. Greeting us with a confident smile, Mark shared his story in a magnetic voice, which left me stunned. I felt more ashamed to learn that he ran a website to help children with hearing problems than guilty about stupidly thinking disabled people couldn’t be intelligent. Then his voice was drowned out by a thunderous outburst of applause. Having a lump in my throat, I clapped my hands even more loudly, determined never to judge a book by its cover.
