The Oldest Cookbooks from Libraries Around the World
Libro de arte coquinaria The Library of Congress
The 15th-century Libro de arte coquinaria, or The Art of Cooking, is the work of Maestro Martino da Como. Martino was known for cooking for his employer. Along the way, he achieved fame as “the prince of cooks.” Martino’s work is significant for another reason too. In the 15th century, his recipes made up a major part of the world’s first printed cookbook, Platina’s De honesta voluptate et valetudine.
Shanjia Qinggong
The Harvard-Yenching Library
Harvard-Yenching owns a 17th-century copy of the Simple Offerings of Rural Households (Shanjia Qinggong). Containing over 100 recipes, Simple Offerings is probably the earliest surviving cookbook in Chinese. The author, Lin Hong, was a man of letters who lived in the Southern Song Dynasty. Lin evidently preferred vegetarian foods, as most of his recipes were plant-based.
Wushi Zhongkui lu
The Harvard-Yenching Library
Harvard-Yenching is also home to a 17th-century copy of the Cooking Manual of Madame Wu (Wushi Zhongkui lu), one of two surviving cookbooks by a Chinese woman before the 20th century. Unfortunately, few of Madame Wu's personal details are known. Scholars guess that she lived in the larger Shanghai region during the Southern Song Dynasty. Madame Wu apparently had a weakness for sweets, as she devoted a full chapter of her cookbook just to desserts.
Complete Kitchen and Cellar Dictionary The Oslo Public Library
The Oslo Public Library, known as the Deichman Library, has a 1716 copy of the Complete Kitchen and Cellar Dictionary, written by the German writer Paul Jacob Marperger. It belonged to a Norwegian lawyer named Johan Fredrik Bartholin, who donated it to the city of Christiania (the former name for Oslo) in 1784. The book has been in the Deichman collection since it opened in 1785.
21. Who greatly contributed to the world’s first printed cookbook?
A. Lin Hong. B. Paul Jacob Marperger.
C. Maestro Martino da Como. D. Madame Wu.

22. What similarity do the two Chinese cookbooks share?
A. Their authors were a man of letters.
B. They focused on plant-based recipes.
C. Their copies first appeared in Shanghai.
D. They were written in the Southern Song Dynasty.
23. Which of the following is in the Deichman collection?
A. Shanjia Qinggong. B. Wushi Zhongkui lu.
C. Libro de arte coquinaria. D. Complete Kitchen and Cellar Dictionary.

Sasha Masakowski remembers being six years old, seated at the piano next to her father — the well-known jazz guitarist, Steve Masakowski.
“He’d play harmonies in the background on the guitar, and he’d encourage me to improvise ( 即 興 演
Sasha recalls. “He’d tell me to play something using just the white keys or just the black keys, and I’d make up music.” She says she was a little composer playing along with her dad in their New Orleans home. “I love those memories,” she adds.
As Sasha got older, though, her interest in jazz began to flag. Sasha went to a local arts high school and focused on musical theater. Steve admits to hoping his daughter would develop a love for jazz.
The father’s expectation was eventually met when the daughter rediscovered jazz music. Sasha says she admired a guy in the jazz department until the day they met. The first thing he said was, “I’m such a big fan of your dad’s!” She says the experience helped her realize that her father and his music were, in fact, cool. Finally, Sasha decided to study jazz instead of musical theater at the University of New Orleans, where her father headed the Jazz Studies Program.
Now, Sasha and Steve love playing together and they treasure the common language jazz gives them. Both compose music, but while her father is more focused on traditional jazz and teaching, Sasha likes to produce music with more electronic trends than Steve’s. Despite different interests, Steve’s pride in his daughter is clear. Today, Sasha is known for her musicality and her ability to improvise. “Improvising scares a lot of singers, but for me I feel like a little composer again at the piano next to my dad. I love it in large part because of him,” Sasha says.
24. What do we know about young Sasha?
A. She was well-known as a jazz guitarist.
B. She learned to compose with her father’s encouragement.
C. She was good at improvising on a piano.
D. She performed with her father worldwide.
25. What does paragraph 4 stress about Sasha?
A. Her preparation for a university.
B. Her admiration for a jazz student.

C. Her going back to jazz and her father.
D. Her studying at a local arts high school.
26. What makes Sasha different from her father?
A. The style of her music.
B. Her preference for the piano.
C. Her opinion about improvising.
D. The teaching method she sticks to.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Love of music leads to a career of uncertainty.
B. Jazz deepens the bond between father and daughter.
C. A daughter follows in her father’s footsteps faithfully.
D. A large musical household brings joy to millions of people.

C
We often share images or thoughts on social networks. Now, researchers at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) have developed an algorithm (算法) that can analyse the content people post online.
According to William Glasser's Choice Theory, there are five basic needs: Survival, Power, Freedom, Belonging and Fun.
“These needs even have an influence on the images we choose to upload to our Instagram page,” explained Mohammad Mahdi Dehshibi, a researcher at the UOC.
The research team has spent two years working on a deep-learning model that identifies the five needs described by Glasser.
Glasser’s theory argues that each choice users make on social media does not respond to just one basic need
— the multi-label approach of this study helps to clear it up. Dehshibi uses an example to explain this: “Imagine that a cyclist is riding up a mountain, and at the top, he can choose between sharing a selfie (自拍照) and a group photo. If he chooses the selfie, we perceive a need for Power, but if he chooses the other option, we can conclude
that the person is not only looking for Fun but also a way to satisfy his need for Belonging.”
“Studying data from social networks that belong to non-English-speaking users could help build inclusive and diverse tools and models for addressing mental health problems in people with diverse cultural backgrounds,” Dehshibi adds.
The research team believe that their study can help improve preventive measures, ranging from identification to improved treatment when a person has been diagnosed with a mental health disorder.
Back in 2019, University of Vermont researchers developed an artificial-intelligence-based system that can detect signs of anxiety in the speech patterns of young children. Meanwhile, computer scientists from the University of Alberta, Canada, have developed algorithms that can detect and identify depression through people’s voices.

28. What can the algorithm be used to do?
A. Introduce William Glasser’s Choice Theory.
B. Create different databases for the research team.
C. Identify users’ basic needs from the content they share online.
D. Give people a tool to post images or thoughts on social networks.
29. What does the example Dehshibi provides explain about the algorithm?
A. How it works. B. Why it is useful.
C. How it influences users. D. Why it responds to Glasser’s theory.
30. What does the research team think of their study?
A. It can suggest ways to improve social networks.
B. It is useful in handling mental health problems.
C. It is helpful in changing online users’ bad habits.
D. It can link people with diverse cultural backgrounds together.
31. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
A. Summarize the previous paragraphs. B. Provide some advice for the readers.
C. Add some background information. D. Introduce a new topic for discussion.

D
Plastic pollution is a growing global problem. Simplistic, unhelpful labelling and low recycling rates even in the best-equipped countries are major barriers to tackling this issue.
In a new paper, experts from the University of Exeter and the University of Queensland suggest a new internationally applicable labelling system that moves the focus from recyclability to sustainability.
“We need to empower consumers to make more sustainable choices,” says lead author Stephen Burrows. Instead of “yes-no” recycling labels, which are often misleading, a sustainability scale (等級(jí)) could take account of recyclability as well as other factors such as the environmental cost of production, and potential human health
risks from additives.
“Requiring packaging to carry region-specific directions for disposal would shift responsibility away from consumers and towards regulators and plastic producers. This is vital because the mix of plastic products is confusing, and industry must be responsible for clear instructions on how best to dispose of plastic items. The same is true for the chemical additives found in many plastics. Requiring producers to list all additives would be a major step towards informing the public and helping them make decisions regarding environmental impact and human health,” says Burrows.
At present, about 368 million tonnes of plastic is produced worldwide each year. The researchers stress that their recommendations should not diminish the urgent need to use less plastic — especially single-use items.
Professor Tamara Galloway, from the University of Exeter, says: “Our recommendations for a sustainability scale are designed to reduce some of the confusion around plastic disposal. The ultimate aim is to protect the environment and human health from the harmful effects of plastic waste.”

Professor Kevin Thomas, from the University of Queensland, says: “We hope that our recommendations initiate(發(fā)起) a reassessment of plastic labelling and that carrying out a sustainability scale will allow individuals to make informed decisions on how they use plastics.”
32. What are plastic producers required to do?
A. Show consumers plastic additive content.
B. Make their plastic packaging attractive.
C. Remind consumers to assess health risks.
D. Offer specific instructions for regulators.
33. What does the underlined word “diminish” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Create. B. Lessen. C. Demonstrate. D. Acknowledge.
34. What do Galloway and Thomas say about their recommendations?
A. They instruct individuals to get rid of plastic waste.
B. They help individuals reduce harmful effects of plastic waste.
C. They allow individuals to care about their health.
D. They encourage individuals to give tips on plastic disposal.
35. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. There is a need for “yes-no” recycling labels.
B. The consumers need to label their plastic items.
C. Plastic labelling needs a sustainability scale.
D. It is challenging to move from recyclability to sustainability.

HOW TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN A NEW ENVIRONMENT?
Perhaps, you are a smart person with good knowledge and creative ideas, but when you move to a new environment or have to work with some new people, it is not always easy for them to recognize you or respect you immediately. How can you get along with others? 36
37 Moving to a new working environment, you may need to deal with things that don’t belong to your own field. In such a case, people who are more willing to learn new things can become more flexible and be able to meet new requirements in their job.
Have a good sense of judgement on important aspects. Learning or working in a new environment, you need to have a good sense of judgement when joining a discussion or making a decision. 38
Be confident and make eye contact when talking to people. When you go out and meet people, it is
important to look confident. 39 Before you walk in, think to yourself, “I own the room.” Then, walk in holding your head high and smile. Remember to look other people in the eye — it’s the key to creating a connection with people. Soon, you will feel as confident as you look.
Set clear goals to accomplish. 40 Let people know what you stand for. You need to find out which ideas can really unite people and then express those ideas clearly. Also, treat your team members respectfully as

equals.
Be helpful to others. When working, don’t focus on what is your work and what isn’t. After doing your own work, always be ready to help others.
A. When working together with others, it is important that you have a clear vision and a working plan to achieve it.
B. You should get on well with other people, and be willing to give them a hand.

I will never forget what happened when I was at the age of 10. It was one week before Children’s Day. I was looking forward to my gifts. Given the fact that I was the youngest in my family, the other members would like to give me a different gift. Whatever the gift was, I was always more than glad to accept them. Undoubtedly, I was being taken care of. Naturally, it was feeling so good.
In most cases, my uncles would ask me smilingly what I desired before Children’s Day and that year I was eagerly waiting to be asked. What a beautiful spaceship it was! That flashed across my eyes when I opened a big gift box. However, it greeted me against my expectation that year.
It was exactly one week before Children’s Day. Just one week, she could hardly wait. My dear mother told my father she, my future-to-be little sister, would come to the world. Immediately, we went to the hospital. After an hour, they told me that I had the little sister. I didn’t want her but I wanted a spaceship. The days that followed went so fast. No one was taking care of me. Everyone was talking about her. My life would go off the beaten track. I had no intention of being a big brother. But it just happened in an instant.
On the day before Children’s Day, everyone in my home was paying closer and closer attention to my newborn sister. My family was becoming hers. Even my uncles asked me nothing about the gift again. She stole everything I’d ever had. My life and presents were completely spoiled. On thinking of this, I couldn’t help crying
in the middle night sleep. Suddenly, I had a nightmare and was startled ( 嚇 一 跳 ) awake. Shadows being all
around me, I was defenseless and helpless. I rushed into my parents’ bedroom but they were sleeping so soundly that I couldn’t wake them up. They were just stressed out and worn out. Standing near their bed, I tried not to cry when I saw her. She was wide awake, looking at me with her big eyes twinkling in her small bed.

The English speech competition is amazingly fantastic. Not only has it highlighted a thought-provoking subject and a passion-fueling atmosphere but also participants have integrated emotion with body language based on the spectacular wording. How can I justify not being absorbed deeply?
Lost in the rational reflection, I have enhanced my awareness that I will persistently transform my bad habits into good ones on a step-by-step basis and cling to them to cultivate the healthy lifestyle. Moreover, we are what we repeatedly do. Alternatively, healthy lifestyle will facilitate my good habits.
Given such a wonderful activity, what I am enthusiastically expecting is that the more suchlike activities are held, the more far-reaching significance they will have on us. Hopefully, we will take more active part.

All of a sudden, a slim shadow danced in the bedroom, startling her. In that split second, the slimly dancing shadow startled me. It took me what seemed a century to realize a tree waving in the violent wind was reflected on the window. Meanwhile, she began to cry, her mouth wide opening, arms waving and legs kicking. Obviously, she panicked too. Startled as I was, I tiptoed closer to her little bed, held out my hand to stroke hers, patted her on the back with the other. She stopped crying knowingly and grinned from ear to ear with her eyes twinkling again. I breathed a sigh of relief.
Having comforted her, I felt some change slowly happened to me. My loneliness was disappearing out of nowhere now. Instead, a sense of responsibility as an elder brother was overwhelming me. Not only did her arrival take over the center of the whole family initially but also she started to become the center of my attention too. Her

24. B。 He’d play harmonies in the background on the guitar, and he’d encourage me to improvise 和 I’d make up music 以及 she was a little composer playing along with her dad 可知,Sasha 小 時(shí)候跟著父親學(xué)習(xí)作曲。
25. C。 The father’s expectation was eventually met when the daughter rediscovered jazz music 和尾句 Finally, Sasha decided to study jazz instead of musical theater at the University of New Orleans, where her father headed the Jazz Studies Program
26. A。 根據(jù)最后一段中的 while her father is more focused on traditional jazz and teaching,

Sasha likes to produce music with more electronic trends than Steve’s
Now, researchers at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) have developed an algorithm that can analyse the content people post online The research team has spent two years working on a deep-learning model that identifies the five needs described by Glasser
The research team believe that their study can help improve preventive measures, ranging from identification to improved treatment when a person has been diagnosed with a mental health

32. A。 The same is true for the chemical additives found in many plastics.
Requiring producers to list all additives would be a major step towards informing the public and helping them make decisions regarding environmental impact and human health

Professor Tamara Galloway ... Our recommendations for a sustainability scale are designed to reduce some of the confusion around plastic disposal Professor Kevin
Thomas ... We hope that our recommendations initiate a reassessment of plastic labelling and that carrying out a sustainability scale will allow individuals to make informed decisions on how they use plastics 可知,結(jié)合兩者觀 點(diǎn),B 正確。

根據(jù)文章標(biāo)題,如何在新環(huán)境中獲得成功,首段用 “How” 的 問句承上啟下——“How can you get along with others? (如何在新環(huán)境中與他人相處?)”所以 G 選項(xiàng)“How can you get other people to pay attention to you and respect you?”(如何讓別人注意到你并且尊敬你?)
根據(jù)下文“In such a case, people who are more willing to learn new things can become more flexible and be able to meet new requirements in their job.(這種情況下, 愿意學(xué)習(xí)新東西的人會(huì)變得更加靈活,也能達(dá)到他們工作中的新要求。)”

working in a new environment, you need to have a good sense of judgement when joining a discussion or making a decision.(對(duì)于重要的方面要有好的判斷力。
39.根據(jù)下文“Before you walk in, think to yourself, “I own the room.” Then, walk in holding your head high and smile.(進(jìn)去之前,自己在心里想著,“我就是這個(gè)房間的主任。”

故選 A。

41. B 根據(jù)前文,主人公 Arens 聽到了呼救的聲音(the cry of help)。再根據(jù) about 15 feet from the frozen banks 得知這個(gè)位置是呼喊的 cry 的“來源”source。
43. C 根據(jù)前文獵犬溺水,正努力的爬上冰面,struggling to climb to a thin of ice, 注意形容詞 thin,說 明冰很薄并不是一塊兒冰而應(yīng)該是一層薄薄的冰面,所以排除 block 和 cube,應(yīng)該選擇 C. layer“一層”更符 合題意。
How she got there no one knows, but an elderly man was already on the scene, determined to save her.
He’d 44 the pond in a rowboat and was hacking (鑿) the ice with a rock to create a path to

the dog.
(所以)會(huì)有很好的機(jī)會(huì) had a better chance, 所以選擇 C. better,干擾項(xiàng)為 B 選項(xiàng) more,但是因?yàn)檫@里的 a chance 為單數(shù),所以不能選擇 B。
47. D 由后文得知,Arens 要跳入水中救狗 crashing into the freezing water,所以這里他要脫下 took off 他的 球鞋 sneakers 和襪子 socks。

He then put the dog into the boat and slid it back to the shore,在岸邊站著的 bystanders 旁觀者把狗送到附近的房子,此處要選擇一個(gè)形容詞 來形容旁觀者的心情,看到這樣緊急的救援行動(dòng)以及命懸一線的狗,旁觀者的心情應(yīng)該是焦急的 anxious, 所以選擇 D。
54. A 狗沖向 Arens 的懷抱,并親吻他的臉頰,考察固定搭配 kiss sb on the cheek 親吻某人的臉頰。
That special delivery is the highlight in my career.

W: Okay, but how can you take great photos with an average camera? I’ve been to your latest wildlife exhibition.

All of your pictures looked, you know, very “expensive”.

M: Aha, they did take a lot of effort. But what really made them “expensive” was the time I spent tracking those animals and catching precious moments, not the camera.
W: So the key lies in you. M: Correct.
W: Hmm, Sam, I’ve got a class in five minutes. Do you think you’ll have time later at noon? We can talk over a cup of coffee.

W: Well, I had just sent in the final edits for The Song of Music then and my editor asked what was next. Honestly, I had been so focused on finishing the last one that it hadn’t occurred to me what was going to come next. But
when I caught sight of a copy of Odyssey, I knew immediately what I wanted to write next.

M: Second, when do you write each day?

W: I start writing around 9 am and go until 2 pm, which is usually when my inspiration dries up. Then I go to lunch, take a walk in my backyard and go on with my writing. I used to go cycling in the gym, but it took too much energy.
M: Next one, what is your favorite book?

W: The Upper World. I think there is no more urgent challenge facing us than the climate crisis. This book brings clearly home what is at risk and …

(Text 10)

Last year we went on an unsupported trip to the North Pole. By “unsupported” I mean that we pulled everything without the help of any cars, boats or dogs. The only help that we had was from kites. They pulled us and our things along as we skied. I’ve always been very sporty and loved swimming even before I could walk. It was at about age fifteen that I became keen on adventurous activities. At the time I discovered I enjoyed boating very much. That helped me take some amazing trips and I haven’t looked back since. I love reading about famous explorers. Richard Weber, Misha Malakhov, and Fridtjof Nansen were all on my reading list. However, if I were to name a hero, it would be Nansen, the Norwegian explorer. He was also good at science and politics. All in all, a very remarkable man. Reading Nansen’s biography taught me that the key thing all explorers need is the ability to keep their minds under control. If they can’t manage that, they won’t succeed even if their bodies are in top physical condition.
