It was the final of the national high school basketball game. It was the first time in their history, e team from a small town faced last year's best team. The players thought they couldn't win and wanted to give up. Seeing this, the coach told them a story.
Peter was a woodcutter. He was afraid he would fall ill and die. His wife told him that as long as his hands and feet were warm, he was not dead.
One day, Peter went out to cut down trees. It was snowy and cold. After finishing his work, he noticed that his hands and feet were frozen. He thought he was dead, so he stopped working and lay down on the ground.
After Peter had been lying for a while, some wolves came over. They ate all the food in Peter's food bag. The wolves then noticed Peter lying quietly on the ground. They were getting near to Peter. Peter thought, "If I weren't dead, I would kill you all. "When the wolves saw Peter doing nothing, they ate him.
As the coach finished the story, the players talked about how silly Peter was. At the same time, they realized what their coach wanted them to understand: the opposite team was like the wolves, and they were like the woodcutter. They should fight till the end, whether they were "alive or dead".

Smart Schoolbag
Forget to pack the books you need into your schoolbag in the morning rush? A schoolboy aged 11 has invented a schoolbag. It tells you which books to pack. A university makes that happen. It uses a 3D printer to create sweets based on the weather information of a certain day.

Passage 3
A five-month-old bird became a world record holder by flying around 13.560 kilometers without stopping in 11 days. The bar-tailed godwit(斑尾塍鷸)took off from Alaska, the United States, on October 13, 2022 and landed in Tasmania, Australia, on October 24. The old record was set in 2021 by a different bar-tailed godwit. The adult flew about 13,050 kilometers to Australia.

The new record holder carried a 5G GPS chip(芯片), so its first migration(遷徙)could be followed by scientists. The bird flew mostly over the open Pacific Ocean to reach Tasmania. According to Eric Woehler, an expert at BirdLife Tasmania, the journey was very dangerous. "If a godwit lands on water because of tiredness or bad weather, it will die, because it has no way of getting off the water," he said.
Adult godwits begin their migration up to six weeks earlier, so it was impossible for the young bird to have followed more experienced adults south. Godwits usually migrate in groups, but the researchers aren't sure yet if the bird finished the record-breaking journey alone or as a part of a group.
During the trip, the bird flew over a few islands which could give it a chance to eat and drink. But for some reason, it just kept flying. This may have to do with a special talent of bar-tailed godwits. They are able to shrink some parts of their body so that there will be enough space for fat When they land and start to eat, those parts will grow again. Such ability is really helpful when they make long trips over the sea.
41. What can we learn about the new record holder?
A. It flew 11 days without stopping. B. It was an adult bar-tailed godwit.
C. It broke the record set in 2020. D. It flew about 13,050 kilometers.
42. The journey was dangerous for the bird because ___________.
A. there was no food for it B. it might be eaten by sea animals
C. it was not able to land on water D. it might get lost in bad weather
43. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Adult godwits always lead the younger to the south.
B. Not all godwits migrate at the same time.
C. The record-breaking bird was more experienced than others.
D. The record-breaking bird finished the journey by itself.
44. The underlined word “shrink" probably means “___________".
A. make something cleaner B. make something warmer
C. make something stronger D. make something smaller
45. What is the best title for the passage!
A. The bar-tailed godwit's ability B. 5G GPS chips for birds

Passage 4
Electric cars may seem like a recent invention, but they've been around for years. In the early 1900s, there were more electric cars on the road than there were petrol(汽油)cars. At that time, petrol was expensive compared with other fuels(燃料). When petrol prices dropped and new technologies were developed, electric cars went out of fashion. Instead, petrol cars became more popular because they could travel longer distances without stopping.
During the 20th century, petrol cars got bigger, heavier and faster. They needed more fuel, and it caused more air pollution. For years, car makers didn't worry about pollution. They didn't worry about the amount of petrol cars used, either. But when people began to realize that there was not enough oil on the earth, they asked car makers to produce more efficient(高效能的)and less polluting cars.
One method of solving the problem was a "hybrid” car(混合動力車), one that ran partly on petrol and partly on electricity. Hybrid cars became popular in the 2000s when petrol prices went up and the prices of hybrid cars went down.
An all-electric car uses no petrol. The problem, however, is that car batteries(電池)need to be recharged(再充電). That makes electric cars not so useful for long journeys.
Many people are not pleased with it. The government and car makers are working together to develop safe, cheap and useful electric cars. When people have these cars in the future, a petrol station may be a thing of the past.
46. Electric cars went out of fashion because ___________.
A. petrol oil was more expensive B. new technologies were developed
C. they were more popular than petrol cars D. they were invented recently
47. Petrol cars___________.
A. can protect the environment B. can cause less pollution
C. can save more petrol oil D. need more fuel than electric cars
48. What kind of cars are more efficient and less polluting?
A. Petrol cars B. Electric cars C. Hybrid cars D. Shared cars
49. The fourth paragraph mainly tells us ___________.
A. all-electric cars don't need petrol B. all-electric cars have a long history
C. all-electric cars can travel long distances D. all-electric cars don't use batteries
50. From the passage, we can infer(推斷)___________.
A. all-electric cars will use less petrol oil
B. electric cars will take the place of petrol cars
C. more petrol stations will be set up in the future
D. there will be more and more petrol cars in the future

Letters play an important role in history. When we write a letter, it is common for us to use an envelope(信封)to protect the letter. But do you know the 66 of the envelope? In fact, the history of the envelope is probably a little 67 than you think
It is believed that the envelope first appeared over 4,000 years ago 68 , the early envelope was nothing like what we use today. It was made from clay and looked 69 a ball. After the message was put into it, more clay would be added 70 the “envelope” to make the message safe. To read the message, one had to break the clay envelope.
The idea for the stamp was introduced for the 71 time in 1837. It was invented by a 72 businessman. The early paper envelopes looked very simple. They were simply pieces of paper that would be wrapped(包裹)around the letter. Then official paper envelopes were created in 1837. Russel Hawes invented an automatic(自動的)envelope maker in the 1850s. The machine 74 produce about 12,500 envelopes at that time every day.

Passage 1

Poverty(貧困)is a big problem around the world. But China has done a good job of dealing with it and it has found its own way to fight against poverty. Besides giving money to poor people, it has tried to provide people with education to lift themselves out of poverty. Common people play a big role in the fight.
When Mao Xianglin started to work as the Party secretary of his village, there was only one way out of the village for many years. He led more than 100 villagers to build a road with their hands. It took them seven years to build an eight-kilometer road. Mao then encouraged the villagers to grow oranges. Last year, their orange yield(產(chǎn)量)was nearly 40 tons. Young people have returned to the village to sell oranges through some apps. By the end of 2019, 269 villagers had been lifted out of poverty. The per capital income(人均收入)reached 12,670 yuan, 40 times more than in the 1990s.
Over the last few years, 98.99 million people have been lifted out of poverty. Many Party secretaries like Mao Xianglin are lifting the poor people out of the poverty. China has been responsible for reducing 70 percent of poverty worldwide since the late 1970s.
76. What has China done to deal with poverty?
