Ordering takeouts is very popular nowadays because it is convenient. More than 60 percent of the people in China order takeout food at least twice a week. If people don’t want to eat out, they can just order takeouts on the smartphone and wait for it to be delivered (送達). What about people living in ancient times? Did they eat takeouts?
In fact, here was takeout as far back as the Song Dynasty. According to history books, Emperor Xiaozong (1127-1194) liked to order takeouts late at night. His servants then went around the city to pick up the dishes and bring them back to the palace.
Ordinary (普通的) people also ordered takeouts. Restaurant waiters would go out into the streets and shout out which dishes could be ordered that day. After hearing the waiters, people could then place an order. Later, delivery workers would bring food to their homes. In the famous Song Dynasty painting Along the River During the Qingming Festival (《清明上河圖》), a takeout worker can be seen on a delivery with food in hand.
People at that time even had a special meal box for takeout dishes. It was a long wooden box with several layers. People also used warming plates made of two layers of porcelain (瓷). Hot water could be put between them to keep dishes warm.

An Amazing Escape
Do you know Touching the Void? It is a book by Joe Simpson, the mountaineer. It tells the story of how Simpson and another mountaineer, Simon Yates, almost died trying to climb the 6344-metre Siula Grande Mountain (斯拉格蘭峰) in the Andes (安第斯山脈) in 1985. In 2003, the book became an award-winning film.
Yates and Simpson reached the top of the mountain and became the first people to climb the Siula Grande by the west face. But a disaster happened on the way down. Simpson fell and broke his leg. The men were running out of water and needed to get back to their camp, about 900 metres below, to get treatment for Simpson.
Yates tried to help Simpson to climb down the mountain. He started to lower him down the mountain on a rope. But the rope tangled (纏結) and Simpson was hanging in the mid-air. Yates couldn’t see or hear Simpson, but he could feel himself being pulled down the mountain. He tried to stop himself slipping. He held on for an hour but finally decided that Simpson must be dead. So he cut the rope, to stop himself from being pulled over the edge, and let Simpson fall.
In fact, Simpson was not dead. He fell another 100 feet and landed on a bridge of ice. From there he crawled
(爬行) for three days, without food or water, until he reached the camp. Yates was shocked that he had almost killed his friend, but Simpson said he would have done exactly the same thing.

“Why, yes. You’re right. But how do you know these things?”
“I see a return ticket in your glove.I see fresh mud on the left arm of your dress. Now tell us your problem.”
“My name is Helen Stoner,” she states, “My mother and father are dead.I am living with my stepfather, Dr.Grimes by Roylott. He comes from a rich family. But they are no longer rich. They have nothing except a small piece of land and a huge old house. We are living in the house. Dr.Roylott is using my mother’s money for expenses (開支). Part of it was for my sister and me. It was my birthday last Thursday. I decided to celebrate by inviting a few friends out to supper. I chose a restaurant in a quiet part of town. The waiter then pointed to a table in the corner. “The people there are about to leave.”he said. “Just hold on and you’ll find a place there.” He was right. Fifteen minutes later, the people at the corner table paid their bill, got up and left. I led my friends across and we all sat down.

七、書面表達(15 分)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I’m writing to recommend myself as a volunteer for the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou 2022.
First, I would like to introduce myself. I am sixteen years old with short hair, and I am smart and quick to learn. I have no difficulty in communicating with others. What’s more, I am familiar with different cultures.
Second, I always wear a smile on my face and I have a good sense of humour. Also, I am ready to help others. For example, at the weekend I put the books onto the shelves, clean the desk and sweep the floor for the librarian in the library.
Third, as for hobbies, I like DIY and raising animals. Doing DIY and Raising animals can help me get close to nature and enjoy myself.
Finally, I served as a volunteer at the World Park last month and helped many people there whenever they were in need. I would like to be a social worker and help other people when I grow up.
I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours faithfully, Andre
