The turn f the year is traditinally the time fr reviewing ne's life, and perhaps fr making sme reslutins as t what t cncentrate n in the cming year; and fr many years past I have taken advantage f the hliday perid t review my wn gal and ambitin.
One thing I d decide t d this year, with sme unwillingness, is t give up writing the Grumpy Old Bkman clumn in this magazine. It's nt that I've lst interest in the bk wrld, yu understand. It is in fact well ver 15 years since ur editr wrte t me and asked if I wuld be interested in writing a regular piece abut what was, even then, a rapidly changing publishing scene. He apprached me because since 2004 I had been writing a regular blg called, amazingly enugh, Grumpy Old Bkman.
As my mnthly survey f develpments in bth traditinal and digital publishing cntinued, in this magazine, I began t realize that writers in this century, f bth fictin and nn-fictin, are living in smething clse t a paradise. Once, yu struggled fr years t find a publisher—r an agent if yu wanted ne—but nw yu can publish yur wn stuff, either digitally r in paperback, withut it csting yu a penny piece. Amazing.
After abut five years f prducing such clumns, at just under a thusand wrds a time, it ccurred t me that, rather than let these essays drift away n the seas f time, it might be f value t ptential readers t publish my thughts and cmments in bk frm. Hence, in 2014, I published the first 69 GOB clumns in paperback frmat, using Amazn's Create space facilities. Title: Writers Rejice! A mnthly diary f the dawn f the digital age, which was my first trial. And nw I sincerely wish a new 2022.

In English it's cmmn t say, “I knw this twn like the back f my hand!” While we may knw ur twns really well, hw well d we actually knw ur hands? Maybe nt quite as well as we think, said a scientific study.
Matthew Lng and his team frm University Cllege Lndn studied the left hands f 100 peple. With their hands placed palms dwn under a bard, Lng's team gave the instructin t pint t their knuckles (指關(guān)節(jié)) and fingertips with a marker. Hw did they d? Nt that well.
“Peple think their hand is wider than it actually is,” said Lng. He said they als seemed t think their fingers were shrter than their true lengths. Peple were mst accurate when finding their thumbs, but became less accurate with each finger, up t their pinkies (小手指)。
“It is cnnected t ur sense f psitin,” explained Lng. Humans knw where different parts f ur bdies are, even if we can't see them. “It tells us whether a jint is straight r nt,” said Lng. “We als need t knw the distances between ur jints," he went n. Our brains knw the sizes and shapes f ur bdies frm the maps they make fr themselves. “This experiment tried t find thse maps," he said.
Maybe maps dn't need t be perfect. But why aren't ur brains mre accurate? Lng said ur brains “see” areas based n ur sense f tuch, with the strnger the sense f tuch in a specific bdy part, the bigger that bdy part seems. An example is ur lips. As they have mre nerves than ur nses, ur brain's map shws ur lips are bigger. The same thing can happen with bdy parts that have a lt f nerves. If yu've ever had smething stuck in yur teeth it prbably felt huge! That's because ur tngues als have lts f nerves.
If yu want t have sme fun, try this test with yur classmates. Get sme bards and sme markers and have them mark the spts where they think their knuckles and fingertips are. Cmpare their hands t the marker spts and see hw well they have perfrmed.
28. What can we learn frm the experiment?
A. Peple are always mre accurate t judge the width f their palms.
B. The experiment is t measure with and length f hands accurately.
C. Peple' s perceptin f hands is nt smething they take fr granted.
D. The experiment explres the difference between left and right hands.
29. What des the underlined wrd “It” in Paragraph 4 refer t?
A. The size f the hand. B. The misbelief peple had.
C. The map the brain makes. D. The psitin f each bdy part.
30. Accrding t the passage, what's the key factr in affecting ur perceptin f hands?
A. The shapes f ur bdies. B. Maps f rgans.
C. The distances between jints. D. The brain.
31. What's the purpse f the passage?
A. T give us a further insight int the brain.
B. T cnvince us that seeing is nt believing.
C. T cnduct a wider research abut ur hands.
D. T intrduce an easy but interesting experiment.

Sme late Stne Age Eurpeans may have carried make-up inside mini bttles wrm arund their necks r waists mre than 6,000 years ag.
Researchers have fund traces f ingredients knwn t be used in csmetic frmulatins (配力) by later civilizatins inside small bttles unearthed in Slvenia, dating t between 4350 and 4100 B.C, mre than 200 years earlier than previusly thught. In 2014, Bine Kramberger at the Institute fr the PCHS fund a mini ceramic bttle al an ancient site nce ccupied by peple f the Lasinja culture in arund 4350 B. C. Mre than 100 similar bttles have als been fund.
Their purpse was unknwn, but it is thught that sme might have been children's tys. Curiusly, mst f them have hles in their tiny handles r edges that archaelgists think peple threaded string thrugh, enabling them t be wrn arund the neck r waist. But Kramberger's find was different because it cntained a slid white substance. “It was clear that it had valuable infrmatin because in such ld archaelgical sites, we rarely find cntainers that still keep remains f their frmer cntent," he says.
Lng and thin stne tls were fund near the bttle, which culd have been used t extract the substance within. Nw, Kramberger and his clleagues have analysed the substance in the bttle and examined 13 thers frm the same perid.
The mystery material cntained a white lead mineral called cerussite, while different lead minerals were identified in tw ther bttles. The three lead-cntaining bttles als had cntents cming frm beeswax (蜂蠟) inside.
The bttles' cntents culd have been used fr painting. says Kramberger. But he says it is mre likely that they were csmetics, because they cntained cmmn ingredients fr such prducts knwn frm later cultures. Cerussite pwder was very ppular amng the ancient Greeks and Rmans fr skin whitening and remedies, despite is knwn txicity (毒性).
Gaydarska says the new study supprts what archaelgists have lng thught—“that the abilities and cultures f Nelithic peple were far mre cmprehensive and cmplicated than they are ften given credit fr".
32. Why are the small bttles unearthed in Slvenia special?
A. The bttles might have been wrn arund the necks r waists.
B. The bttles cntained sme ingredients related t the make-up.
C. The time f the bttles is much earlier than previusly thught.
D. Researchers were astnished at the number f the similar bttles.
33. Accrding t Kramberger's finding, what is the substance cntained in the bttles?
A. String. B. White paint. C. Stne tls. D. Cerussite.
34. What can we infer frm the passage?
A. The technlgy f extracting substances was already advanced in ancient times.
B. Cerussite pwder was a perfect slutin t skin prblems fr ancient Eurpeans.
C. It's easy fr archaelgists t find the cntainers with remains f frmer cntent.
D. The cultures f Nelithic peple were cmmnly believed t be easy and simple.
35. What des the passage mainly talk abut?
A. Peple in ancient times had an eye fr beauty.
B. Eurpeans may have wrn make-up in the Stne Age.
C. Cntents f the bttles fund in Slvenia were analyzed.
D. There are varius reasns fr ancient Eurpeans' wearing make-up.

It accesses higher rders f thinking. Art desn't just make yu absrb infrmatin. 38 This is why creativity is a frm f intelligence—it is a special ability that unlcks the ptential f the human mind. 39
40 Many times in histry we have heard f peple being criticized, threatened and even killed because f their artwrk. Thse respnsible fr these reactins, may it be an aggressive gvernment, take these measures against artists knwing hw much their wrks can affect the plitics in a given area. In the hands f gd peple, hwever, art can be used t give back hpe r ffer curage in a sciety that's underging a lt f hardships.
A. An, al is simplest, is a frm f cmmunicating with each ther.
B. The truth is that peple have recgnized hw pwerful art can be.

Praise fr Pineers in Science
In memry f Marie Curie n her birthday n Saturday, the fficial website f the Nbel Prize psted a phtgraph f her ntebk saying. “Marie Curie died f aplastic anaemia (再生障礙性貧血) n 4 July 1934, a result f years f expsure t radiatin thrugh her wrk. Even tday her labratry ntebk frm 1899-1902, is 41 and will be fr 1.500 years.”
The tales f Marie and ther scientists f her time are in sme sense very 42 .
Wilhelm Cnrad Rentgen discvered X-ray in 1895. A year later, Antine Henri Becquerel fund that sme natural substances 43 rays, t. Later, Marie and her physicist husband, Pierre Curie, gave it a(n) 44 , radiactivity.
Hwever, the 45 effects f radiactivity were nt discvered until decades later. Marie and her 46 scientists dealt with radiactive substances fr decades using little r n prtectin. Marie's death is a reminder abut the risks pineers in science 47 . It was nly after peple handling radiactive substances began t get similar 48 that medical experts asked peple t use prtectin. Tday, medical health wrkers and patients wear heavy prtective 49 during X-rays.
It is almst 50 that thse explring new frntiers fr science are expsing themselves t unknwn dangers. There is a(n) 51 fr better prtectin fr the pineers, but that is nt pssible until the dangers are fully knwn. Fr example, the space suits astrnauts wear 52 them against radiatin. Hwever, nly 53 will tell if there are sme ther unknwn dangers.
The cntributins and sacrifices by such pineers t the field f science are 54 and deserving f ur respect. Because the pineers nt nly 55 new frntiers, but als help us better prtect urselves frm unknwn surrundings.
