Typical cmmercial white paints reflect nly 80% t 90% f sunlight and fail t help buildings stay cl during the day. Fr the past six years, mechanical engineer Xiulin Ruan at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, and his clleagues sught t create whiter paints t cl buildings withut the need f electricity. The ne that perfrmed best is based n barium sulfate(硫酸鋇), smething used t whiten pht paper and makeup. It is highly reflective t slar wavelengths f light. The scientists made sure the paint had a high cncentratin f barium sulfate particles(顆粒) f many different sizes. The wavelength f light each particle scatters depends n its size, s a wide range f particle sizes helps the paint reflect mre light frm the sun.
Outdr tests f the new paint revealed it was the clest n recrd, keeping surfaces 19 degrees Fahrenheit cler than their surrunding surfaces at night, and 8 degrees cler than surrundings under strng nn sunlight. It even wrked in the middle f winter — when the temperature was 43 degrees F, it still managed t lwer temperatures by 18 degrees Fahrenheit.
The scientists estimate that if 1,000 square feet f rf were cvered with this paint, it wuld prvide a cling pwer f 10 kilwatts, mre pwerful than the central air cnditiners used by mst huses. The scientists nted they culd likely make the paint even whiter by increasing the particle cncentratin, althugh t high a cncentratin wuld make the paint easier t peel ff. Ruan said, “ painting 0.5% t 1% f the Earth’s surface with their paint, fr example by cating rfs, rads, unused land and s n, might even help stp glbal warming.” He added, “Barium sulfate is cmmn and envirnmentally safe, and pwders f it are rughly half the cst f thse ften used in cmmercial white paints.”
In the future, the researchers want t ptimize and cmmercialize their paint fr a wide range f applicatins, including buildings, autmbiles and utdr equipment. They wuld als like t develp clred versins.
