If you’re reading this article and you’re the mother of a little guy named Leo who was playing with his sister in a playground in Main Beach today, then you should know that you are raising a really warm-hearted, amazingly kind and extremely friendly little kid!
I have a two-and-a-half-year-old who, after being attacked(攻擊)by a wild bird, and being jumped on without warning by some very excited but harmless baby dogs, is now afraid of birds and dogs. While playing in the park today, a large bird headed towards us quietly, leading her to give up her fun and run and hide in a basement of the playground.
Leo asked her what she was doing and she told him “I’m hiding because I ’ m afraid of birds”,at which point he could have just shrugged(聳肩)and walked away. Instead, he got down on her level and explained that, actually, birds were just as afraid as she was. When she still looked doubtful, he jumped up and walked to the bird, shouting loudly as it ran away from him, ‘‘ See! It is running away! Don ’t be afraid! ”
He then cheated her out of the basement and, although she couldn’t answer all his questions because of her age and ability, continued to include her in his and his sister’s games around the play area—including, much to her delight, pushing her around on her push bike.
My daughter was beyond delighted to have playmates—to the point that when her grandma joined us, my daughter introduced him as “my new best friend Leo” !

6. What did Leo plan to do by driving the bird away?
A. Introduce a way of training birds.
B. Protect the bird from being hurt.
C. Stop the bird from hurting the little girl.

7. What is the author’ s purpose in writing this text?
A. To praise a little boy. B. To explain why her daughter hated dogs.
C. To show off her lovely daughter. D. To teach her daughter to make new friends.

New research suggests that nearly half of American teenagers say they use the Internet almost all the time. The results were based on a Pew public opinion study earned out from April 14 to May 4. The study contained 1,316 teens aged 13 to 17 years old. The research found that about 95 percent of American teens have smartphones.
The study also asked teens about their social media behavior. It found that the number of teens using Facebook has dropped to 32 percent, down from 71 percent in 2015. The research showed that teens have moved away from Facebook to spend time on the video sharing services YouTube and TikTok. About 95 percent of the teens said they use Google-owned YouTube, while 67 percent said they use TikTok.
About 62 percent of the teens said they use Instagram, which is owned by Facebook’ s parent company Meta. About 59 percent said they use Snapchat. Less than one fourth of the teens said they use Twitter.
The research found that teen boys are more likely than teen girls to use YouTube, or the services Twitch and Reddit. Teen girls are more interested in using TikTok, Instagram and Snapchat. In addition, higher shares of black teens reported using TikTok, Twitter and WhatsApp compared to white teens.
About 54 percent of the teens questioned said it would be “somewhat hard” to give up social media, while 46 percent said it would be “somewhat easy” . About 25 percent of the teen boys said giving up social media would be “very easy”. But just 15 percent of the teen girls said the same.
Experts in online technology behavior have accused (指控) large technology companies of contraposing teens with methods to get them to spend more time on their social media services.
Child rights groups have warned that heavy use of social media services can harm the mind health of young users. They have called on large technology companies to take steps to reduce such harm.

Somalia, Kenya, and now Ethiopia are warning of a serious drought (干旱)that affects millions of people in Eastern Africa. In Ethiopia’s Somali area, people have seen the failures of what should have been three straight rainy seasons. Droughts do come and go over the years. However, the lack of rainfall has led to the driest conditions in 40 years in parts of Somalia and Ethiopia.
UNICEF is the United Nation’s children’s agency. Local Zaynab Wali told a visiting team with UNICEF that she and her seven children had never seen a drought like this. She said the government gave out food for animals during the last drought five years ago. “This time, we even don’t have enough food for our family.”
Children walk among the bodies of dead animals, which died from lack of food and energy. Somalia Consortium works to improve international aid for Somalia. It said in a separate statement that in Somalia, more than 7 million people need emergency help. It is asking international organizations to give much more to the country.
“We are just one month into the long dry season, and I have already lost 25 goats and sheep,” Hafsa Bedel in Ethiopia’s Somali area told UNICEF. She also lost four camels, a large desert animal, as well. She said there was nowhere for her animals to eat. She added that there was not enough food for her own family, including her six children.
UNICEF thinks that more than 150,000 children in such areas of Ethiopia have dropped out of school. They are needed to help find the limited amount of water and help their families with other work.
One young boy was seen supporting an animal, a donkey. The donkey was once important for carrying goods. But now, it had become too weak to walk on its own.
12. Why did Zaynab Wali mention the last drought?
A. To show the need to protect animals. B. To express her disappointment this time.
C. To prove the high frequency of drought. D. To praise the government for its timely help.
13. What is Somalia Consortium trying to do now?
A. Get more foreign help.
B. Warn people of the risk of drought.
C. Offer more education to the children there.
D Make clear the number of people in need.
14. What does the last paragraph mainly want to tell us?
A. The sweet picture of the boy and the animal.
B. The functions of animals in farming.
C. The importance of taking care of the weak animal.
D. The seriousness of the drought.
15. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Drought in Eastern Africa Leaves Animals in Danger
B. Drought Makes People of Eastern Africa Leave Their Home
C. UN Officials Care for Children Affected by Drought
D. Millions Face Risk as Drought Affects Eastern Africa
【答案】12. B 13. A 14. D 15. D

根據(jù)文章第二段“Local Zaynab Wali told a visiting team with UNICEF that she and her seven children had never seen a drought like this. She said the government gave out food for animals during the last drought five years ago. “This time, we even don’t have enough food for our family.”(當(dāng)?shù)氐腪aynab Wali告訴聯(lián)合國兒童基金會的一個來訪小組,她和她的七個孩子從來沒有見過這樣的干旱。
根據(jù)文章第三段“Somalia Consortium works to improve international aid for Somalia. It said in a separate statement that in Somalia, more than 7 million people need emergency help. It is asking international organizations to give much more to the country.(索馬里聯(lián)合會致力于改善對索馬里的國際援助。它在一份單獨的聲明中說,在索馬里,有700多萬人需要緊急幫助。它要求國際組織向該國提供更多援助。)”可知索馬里聯(lián)合會在盡力去獲得更多的國外援助;故選A項。
【14題詳解】
推理判斷題。根據(jù)文最后一段“One young boy was seen supporting an animal, a donkey. The donkey was once important for carrying goods. But now, it had become too weak to walk on its own.(有人看到一個小男孩扶著一頭驢子。

This morning I went shopping and in a surrounded area where the shopping trolleys(購物車) are housed, I saw a young man who appeared very troubled. He was thin, dirty and very much alone. I went over to see if he was OK and asked if I could get him something. He said he was OK and that he didn’t want anything.
Oh, my heart went out to this man who appeared to have a mental(精神的)illness and to be homeless. He was so tired and he looked very sad. His feet were in worn shoes. He had a small backpack, a cap, a pair of well-worn runners and a can of coke with him.
While shopping I kept an eye on him to see if he’d moved away or was still there. As he hadn’ t moved on, I bought him a sandwich, a couple of bottles of water, some bananas, muesli bars and some cheese and put them in a bag for him.
As I gave the bag to him, I sensed he was astonished at the simple act of kindness. He said, “You didn’t have to do that for me”, to which I answered “I wanted to. ” I spoke to him again as I was returning my trolley and he was clearly mentally unwell but I took the time to listen to him.
He introduced himself as Nathan and I introduced myself to him. I hope Nathan felt a little bit of love and human kindness today in a world where many people like him are ignored(忽視), and given up. I’m sure Nathan never expected to be where he was now when he was growing up.
I won’ t forget Nathan easily. His sad brown eyes, his tiredness and my short connection with him today touched me deeply. I wonder what situations have brought him to his present state. I came to know his past experiences.
注意: 1.續(xù)寫詞數(shù)應(yīng)為150左右;

So the next day I invited Nathan to a nearby restaurant to celebrate his birthday. It happened that the boss also knew Nathan, and he was very moved when he heard my decision.
