“I don’t feel like I’m very good at drawing real people in the real world,” says Axel Scheffler. The illustrator (插圖畫家) is famous for his unusual and wonderful pictures of animals, but now the COVID-19 pandemic has brought him back into the real world.
The elder illustrator has just helped to produce what must have been one of the fastest books in history. Coronavirus: A Book for Children was written, illustrated and then published for free online in the space of a week!
Facts are important but the book is also frank about the uncertainty the world faces. There’s a chapter on vaccines (疫苗) which explains that the disease is new and currently has no cure. “Honesty is crucial for children of any age, you have to have their trust,” said Scheffler. The book deals with issues such as not seeing grandparents and coping with annoyed parents who might be trying to work from home themselves at a stressful time. The reaction to the book has been overwhelming.
“I’m not a doctor or a nurse but as an illustrator this was something I could do to help and I feel proud that it has had this amazing response,” said Scheffler.
Like all good children’s stories, the book ends on a positive note. There’s a picture of families, doctors and nurses celebrating together and the caption (說明文字) reads “One day this strange time will be over.” Scheffler said, “Right now, hope is very important for children, because one day this pandemic will indeed be over and then perhaps we can stand close together again as the characters do on the last page of this book.”

D. It was fully finished in less than a week.
6. What’s Scheffler’s attitude to his own behavior in paragraph 4?
A. Negative. B. Proud. C. Indifferent. D. Doubtful.
7. Which is the best title for the text?
A. The Fastest Book Was Illustrated Within a Day

C
“Pale moon rains. Red moon blows. White moon neither rains nor snows.” For generations, people have watched the moon for signs of changes in the weather. The moon does, in fact, affect the Earth’s climate and weather patterns in several unnoticeable ways.
The most obvious effect the moon has on the Earth can be seen in the ocean tides (潮汐). A world without tides would have very different weather systems. Tides are one factor that influences the movement of ocean currents, which move warm or cool water about the Earth. Warm ocean currents bring warmer wetter weather, while cold ocean currents bring colder drier weather.
While the lunar nodal cycle is set to bring marked change over the coming decades, the moon affects the Earth in a few other little-known ways on a shorter timescale.
The moon is also thought to affect polar temperatures and contribute to fluctuations (波動) in the extent of Arctic ice. Satellite measurements have shown that the poles are 0.55℃ warmer during a full moon. In addition, tidal forces act to break up ice sheets and change ocean heat flows, converting the amount of ice in the Arctic Ocean.
The moon’s influence, sometimes unnoticeable and sometimes strong, has had a formative impact on life on Earth. Some scientists argue that it is the moon that made life possible in the first place. The moon steadies the Earth as it spins on its axis (軸), helping to give us a stable climate. Without it, the Earth would rock more irregularly. The poles would move obviously in relation to the Earth’s orbit. Seasons, days and nights would all look very different. The moon is closest to the Earth in the universe, without which the Earth would be a very lonely place.
8. What is the author’s purpose of writing paragraph 1?
A. To draw people’s attention to the text. B. To teach people signs of weather changes.
C. To show people how to appreciate the moon. D. To tell people to prepare for extreme weather.
9. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A. The world weather system. B. The impact of ocean tides.
C. The movement of ocean tides. D. The reasons for warmer weather.
10. What does the underlined word “converting” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Changing. B. Speeding. C. Determining. D. Keeping.
11. In which section of a newspaper can you find the text?
A. Health. B. Entertainment. C. Science. D. Sports.

【11題詳解】
推理判斷題。根據(jù)最后一段第二句“Some scientists argue that it is the moon that made life possible in the first place.(一些科學家認為,正是月球使生命成為可能。)”可知,本文應(yīng)該出自報紙的科學板塊。故選C項。

Parents express their sadness that their teenagers always have their noses in their phones. But they might need to rethink their own screen time.
A study came out from the Pew Research Center. It found that two-thirds of parents are concerned about the amount of time their teenage children spend in front of screens. But more than a third of parents expressed concern about their own screen time. Meanwhile, more than half of teens had an observation. They often or sometimes find their parents or caregivers distracted when the teens are trying to have a conversation with them. The study calls teens’ relationship with their phones at times “hyperconnected”. It notes that nearly three-fourths check messages or notifications as soon as they wake up. Parents do the same. But parents do it at a lower rate—57%. This is still substantial.
Big tech companies face a growing strong opposition. There are complaints against the addictive nature of their apps. People complain about the endless notifications and other features. They say they are created to keep people tethered(拴) to their screens.
Many teens are trying to do something about it. 52% of teens have cut back on the time they spend on their phones and 57% have done the same with social media.
Experts say parents have a big role in their kids’ screen habits and setting a good example is a big part of it. “Kids don’t always do what we say but they do as we do,” said Donald Shifrin. He is a professor of pediatrics. He teaches at the University of Washington School of Medicine. He was not involved in the Pew study. “Parents are the door that kids will walk through on their way to the world.” The study surveyed 743 U. S. teens and 1,058 U. S. parents of teens. It was conducted from March 7 to April 10.
12. What did the study find according to paragraph 2?
A. Teenagers are eager to observe others’ behavior.
B. Few parents pay attention to their own screen time.
C. Many teenagers often distract their patents’ attention.
D. Most parents are worried about their teenage children’s screen time.
13. Why do people complain about big tech companies?
A. Because of the companies’ useless apps.
B. Because the companies charge them higher prices.
C. Because of continuous information and features from their apps.
D. Because the companies reduce the speed of the network connection.
14. What have many teens done about their too much screen time?
A. They’ve commented online. B. They’ve downloaded many learning apps.
C. They’ve researched social media’s effects. D. They’ve reduced their screen time.
15. What did professor Donald Shifrin advise parents to do?
A. Never blame their kids. B. Behave well before their kids.
C. Reject their kids’ requests. D. Praise their kids in time.
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. D 15. B
【解析】

People complain about the endless notifications and other features.
根據(jù)倒數(shù)第二段“Many teens are trying to do something about it. 52% of teens have cut back on the time they spend on their phones and 57% have done the same with social media.(許多青少年正試圖對此做些什么。52%的青少年減少了在手機上的時間,57%的青少年也減少了在社交媒體上的時間)”可知,很多青少年已經(jīng)減少了他們的屏幕時間。故選D。
