B
I was in the seventh grade, and we had moved to New Jersey in November. By then, everyone already had had their own friends, and no one wanted to talk to a new girl. To make things worse, they put me in “Section L”. I found out later that everyone called Section L “Loserville”. It was sort of an open secret that it was the section for troublemakers and not-so-smart kids. When I found out, I wanted to scream. I had always been a good student and had amazing friends, and now everyone thought I was a loser!
I did text my friends in Illinois almost every night, especially my best friend, Ana. At first my friends wanted to hear all about it. But then some stopped texting back once I said something about how miserable I was. One night when I was texting with Ana, I complained about another friend who had just done that.
Ana’s texts came really fast for the next few minutes and they surprised me. She said that she was tired of hearing about how bad everything was in New Jersey, too. She said she did not want to hurt my feelings but that I needed to stop feeling so sorry for myself all the time, I had to try to make things better.
The next day, I thought a lot about what Ana had said. She was right!
I wish I could say that everything changed overnight after that, but it didn’t. I was still stuck in “Loserville”, and some people were still mean to me, even though I tried to just stay out of their way.
But what did change was me—I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and did something about making friends. I signed up to make sets for the school play. I met a lot of new people there, and suddenly I had friends to say hi to in the halls!
I still miss Illinois sometimes, but life in New Jersey isn’t so hard anymore. Even though I couldn’t change my situation, I could change my attitude—and that made all the difference.
4. “Loserville” is a section for ________.
A. failures B. good students
C. class secrets D. newcomers
5. The writer complained all the time in the new environment because ________.
A. Ana didn’t text back to her B. her friends hurt her feelings
C. she was unfairly treated D. she was a good student
6. What made a difference in changing the situation?
A. She went back to Illinois.
B. She ended friendship with Ana.
C. She fought back with her classmates.
D. She began to make friends with others.
7. The best title for the passage can be ________.
A. Lasting Friendship B. An Incidence at School
C. Say Goodbye to “Loserville” D. Unhappiness in “Loserville”
A 5. C 6. D 7. C
It was sort of an open secret that it was the section for troublemakers and not-so-smart kids.(這是一個(gè)公開的秘密,這是一個(gè)鬧事者和不太聰明的孩子的區(qū)域。)和I had always been a good student and had amazing friends, and now everyone thought I was a loser!(一直是個(gè)好學(xué)生,有很棒的朋友,現(xiàn)在每個(gè)人都認(rèn)為我是個(gè)失敗者!)
But then some stopped texting back once I said something about how miserable I was.(但當(dāng)我說我有多痛苦時(shí),有些人就不再回我的短信了。)
But what did change was me—I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and did something about making friends.(但真正改變我的是我自己——我不再為自己感到難過,而是做了一些關(guān)于交朋友的事情。)
But what did change was me—I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and did something about making friends.(但真正改變我的是我自己——我不再為自己感到難過,而是做了一些關(guān)于交朋友的事情。)

World’s loneliest marathon
Many of us know about Russia’s Lake Baikal from our textbooks, or by listening to Chinese singer Li Jian’s hit song, Lake Baikal. But over the past decade, the world’s deepest freshwater lake has been in the spotlight for an extreme sport.
Each March since 2005 about 150 people from around the world sign up for the Baikal Ice Marathon. They come to explore the lake’s breathtaking beauty and challenge themselves in unpredictable conditions.
The 26-mile (41.84-kilometers) journey starts on the lake’s eastern shore. In March, the ice is a meter thick and iron-hard. Runners cross this frozen surface, finishing on the western side of the lake.
Known as the “blue eye of Siberia”, Lake Baikal has exceptionally clear waters. This means its ice is almost perfectly transparent. “Seen from above, a runner on the ice looks as if he or she is jogging through space,” The New York Times noted.
The landscape might be beautiful, but it’s also harsh. Strong winds blast across the lake and frostbite can occur within half an hour. Runners say the cold climate is what draws them. They want to test their limits.
“When you are in such an environment, you don’t have cars around you, you don’t have the noise around. I think these extreme races allow you to be alone with nature,” Alicja Barahona, a 64-year-old runner from the US, told ABC News.
The location offers some strange and unique characteristics for this marathon. The finish line is visible from the start, but the endless white offers no progress markers. The race also ends with little fanfare (喧鬧). Tourists crowding the ice are mostly addicted to snapping selfies (自拍) and just ignore the runners.
For some runners, the absence of spectators (觀眾) makes the race more challenging, because it’s lonely. They must fight with themselves. “You are alone on Baikal. It is your race. You are alone with yourself. All you need to do is to defeat yourself,” Veronique Messina, a French runner, told the Telegraph.
8. What can we know about the Baikal Ice Marathon from the article?
A. It takes runners from the northern end to the southern end of the lake.
B. It involves extreme weather and beautiful scenery.
C. It attracts more and more participants each year.
D. It is about 26 kilometers in length.
9. In Paragraph 5, the underlined word “harsh” probably means _______.
A. interesting B. mysterious
C. severe D. safe
10. How does the Baikal Ice Marathon differ from other marathons?
A. Only men are allowed to run in this race.
B. The runners can see the finish line from the start.
C. The runners are often distracted by tourists.
D. There are many progress markers on the ice.
11. What is the most challenging part of the race for Messina?
A. Loneliness. B. The long distance.
C. The cold climate. D. Noisy surroundings.
B 9. C 10. B 11. A
根據(jù)文章第二段“Each March since 2005, about 150 people from around the world sign up for the Baikal Ice Marathon. They come to explore the lake’s breathtaking beauty and challenge themselves in unpredictable conditions.
根據(jù)下文“Strong winds blast across the lake and frostbite can occur within half an hour.”
根據(jù)文章第七段“The location offers some strange and unique characteristics for this marathon. The finish line is visible from the start, but the endless white offers no progress markers.”
根據(jù)最后一段“For some runners, the absence of spectators (觀眾) makes the race more challenging, because it’s lonely.” 故選A。
文章中的代詞it, that, he, him 或them可以指上文提到的人或物,其中it和that還可以指一件事。
D
When I moved into my apartment in Toronto, the path forward of my immigrant life wasn’t clear. I was busy figuring out a new language and culture. I didn’t know anyone well in Toronto and wasn’t sure if I wanted to stay. As time passed, I grew roots into the ground while taking pictures of the garden next door.
My studies required me to take exams which I prepared for in the evenings, after work. My mother visited to take care of me. Once she arrived in Toronto, I showed her a few places she could wander to in the neighborhood. One day, on arriving home in the evening, I found her waiting for me.
“You will not believe it,” she said “Your neighbor talked to me today. She called me over to show me her garden, but I did not want to go empty-handed, so I snatched (一把抓起) the garden pictures from the shelves and gave them to her. She wanted to know about us.” I rang them and got an invitation that same evening.
My neighbors were incredibly welcoming. They “adopted” me that evening. Immigrants themselves, Ann and John were curious about me. They told us about their lives and their grandchildren.
Over the years, I felt like I became an extended member of their family. Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, birthdays, I was at Ann and John’s. They helped me embrace my new Canadian identity.
After graduation, I got a chance that meant I needed to move west. I didn’t get back to Toronto much, but when John’s 90th birthday came along, I couldn’t miss it.
Countless family and friends came to their house and its magic garden to celebrate John’s spirit. I stepped away to let myself navigate (穿行) those familiar garden paths, and there, I met Michael. Michael ended up joining me out west, and when we decided to get married, we immediately called Ann and John.
“You are having your wedding here!” they said. We could not refuse that offer. My parents couldn’t make it to our wedding. Age, disease and distance shattered (使破滅) my hopes of having them witness our happiness. But Ann and John, our other families and friends did not let any shadow fall over that day.
Many seasons have now passed. Ann still watches over her garden and perhaps secretly listens for John’s voice, now a memory. Life continues, but I know the garden will grow greener in spring. I cannot wait to wander its pathways again, wandering in Ann’s steps.

根據(jù)上文“Self-disciplined people are not all outstanding people.(自律的人并不都是優(yōu)秀的人)”以及后文“Some of them read every day. Some of them never run late.(他們中的一些人每天閱讀。

One lunchtime when I was in the third grade will stay with me always.I had been picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had rehearsed my lines so hard with me.But no matter how easily I acted at home,as soon as I stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally,my teacher took me aside. She explained that she had written a narrator's part to the play, and asked me to change roles. Her word, kindly expressed, still hurt, especially when I saw my part go to another girl.
I didn't tell my mother what had happened when I went home for lunch that day.But she sensed my pain.Instead of suggesting we practise my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard.
It was a lovely spring day and the rose vine was turning green.Under the huge trees,we could see yellow dandelions(蒲公英)in the grass in bunches,as if a painter had touched our landscape with a bit of gold.I watched my mother casually bend down by one dandelion."I think I'm going to dig up all these weeds," she said, pulling it up by its roots."From now on,we'll have only roses in this garden."
“But I like dandelions,” I protested.“All flowers are beautiful—even dandelions.”
My mother looked at me seriously.“Yes,every flower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn't it?" she asked thoughtfully.I nodded, pleased that I had won her over.“And that is true of people too," she added.“Not everyone can be a princess, but there is no shame in that." Relieved that she had guessed my pain,I started to cry as I told her what had happened. She listened and smiled reassuringly.

“But you will be a beautiful narrator,” she said, encouraging and comforting me as always as she did. My beloved mom, wearing a shining smile on her soft face, added. “The narrator’s part is important, too.” Thanks to her encouragement, which calmed me down gradually, I began to accept that the narrator part was of vital significance. Time went so fast that it reached to the performance day. At first I was still nervous, but it was at that very moment that I found a dandelion in my pocket. I knew my mom passed the flower to me, which meant to be in company with me.
After the play, I took home the flower. Mom carefully gazed at the dandelion, gently pressed it into the dictionary and grinned happily as she did. “We were perhaps the only people who would press such a sorry-looking weed.” Though decades have passed, I constantly recall our precious lunchtimes being together, grateful, because smiles on Mother’s face and her kind act foster a man like me now! And all those inspiring words like “Cease to struggle and you cease to live.” have been echoing in my mind as fresh as a daisy.
