I never thught that ne day I wuld prudly shw ff my nse n a canvas n my living rm wall. As a teenager, I culdn't stand seeing a pht f my nse in prfile. I hated hw big it was and, if peple praised me fr my lks, I always felt it was in spite f the mst nticeable feature n my face.
I was abut t accept that I wuld never fully see my nse as beautiful when I met Nichlas Baldin, an artist, in a Lndn pub, and asked him t paint my prtrait. I regretted this the secnd I arrived fr my sitting. I had frgtten that Baldin wuld have t spend hurs staring at my biggest insecurity, and then painstakingly translating it nt canvas.
The first sitting was hard. I culd nt shake the feeling f wanting t turn my head t face the frnt. I hated the fact that Baldin was penly and carefully examining the ne feature I had spent years trying t hide. Yet, as the tw-and-a-half-hur sitting went n, I calmed dwn and began t accept my feelings. I had put myself in this situatin, s nw I just needed t sit in it. By the secnd sitting, I was almst excited-nt just by the thught f having an afternn when I had an excuse t d abslutely nthing, but because it had finally sunk in that I was having my prtrait dne.
Baldin tld me what he was thinking when he lked at my nse. T an artist, beauty desn't necessarily reside in a living Barbie dll; it lives in wrinkles, sears, and character. “I always enjy painting distinctive features,” he said. “Beauty is everywhere.”
I was nervus t see the finished prtrait. What if it was further prf that my nse was unattractive? But when I lked at the picture f a gently smiling wman, cnfident in her wn skin, I culdn't help but smile back. She lked like me, yes, but she als lked quite attractive. Her nse was pwerful, strng, and almst beautiful.
The prcess has shifted my perspective and I have learned t make up my wn mind abut what beauty means, whether it is a smiling, strng wman in an il prtrait, r a real-life reflectin-cmplete with a big nse-lking back at me in the mirrr.

A. A prtrait f an artist.
B. Having learned art.
C.The artist having painted her mre beautiful.
D. The experience f being painted by an artist.

A new type f plastic made directly frm rganic plant waste has been created by scientists. The new material is easy t make and culd be used in everything frm packaging and textiles(紡織品)t medicine and electrnics.
The researchers in Switzerland have already used the technique t make packaging films, fibres that can be used fr clthes r ther textiles and threads fr 3D printing.
Cnventinal plastic is s widespread because making it cmbines lw cst, heat stability, mechanical strength and prcessability, the researchers say. Until nw, few, if any, alternative plastics have managed t match r surpass cnventinal plastic in these aspects, which is vital if they are t be used mre widely.
T make the plastic, scientists “cked” wd and ther plant waste in inexpensive chemicals t make a plastic precursr(前身).The sugar structure stays cmplete within the mlecular(分子) structure f the plastic, making the chemistry much cheaper than ther types f alternative plastic.
Baek in 2016, the researchers fund ut that if they added an aldehyde (乙醛) chemical they culd stabilize parts f the plant material t avid their destructin during extractin. But nw, they are using glyxylic acid, a slid rganic substance that ccurs naturally and is used in industry. The team culd simply fasten “sticky” grups nt bth sides f the sugar mlecules, which allwed them t act as plastic building blcks. Using this simple technique, they culd turn up t a quarter f the weight f agricultural waste, r 95 percent f purified sugar int plastic.
“The plastic has very exciting prperties, ntably fr applicatins like fd packaging,” Prfessr Jeremy Lautenbacher frm the Swiss Federal Institute f Technlgy, wh created the plastic, said. “What makes the plastic unique is the presence f the cmplete sugar structure. This makes it incredibly easy t make because yu dn't have t change what nature gives yu, and it is simple t break dwn because it can g back t a mlecule that is already plentiful in nature.”
