Ian McKenna was in third grade when he learned that many kids at his Austin school weren’t getting enough to eat at home. He wanted to help, but local volunteer organizations turned him away, saying he was too young. So he decided to find his own solution. For years, he had been gardening with his mother, and they often sent their vegetables to the neighbors. “I’m good at gardening,” says McKenna, now 16. “Why not plant a garden at school, so that kids in need could take food home?”
McKenna persuaded his school to set aside space for a garden; then he asked the community for donations of seeds and equipment. Other students donated their time. Within months, McKenna’s garden was producing lettuces, tomatoes and cucumbers for students and their families. Now,seven years later, McKenna’s Giving Garden project has expanded to five area schools in addition to his own backyard garden. For most of his gardening activities, McKenna wears the same T-shirt in different colors, with his personal motto on it: BE A GOOD HUMAN. To him, that means helping in any way you can, no matter what your age.
“Even a smile might change someone’s life,” he says. “It lets them know that they are important. It can make their day.”
When COVID-19 hit the U. S., McKenna redoubled his efforts, cooking up to 100 meals to distribute (配送) to the hungry on the weekends. When social distancing meant that volunteers couldn’t work on community garden, he started offering online classes and a gardening hotline so families could grow at home. While gardening is his core focus, McKenna says he is always looking for new ways to help the hungry.
4. What caused Ian’s decision to help the kids in his own way?
A. Being rejected by volunteer groups. B. Being good at gardening.
C. His school’s support. D. His mother’s suggestions.
5. What do we know about the Giving Garden project?
A. It helps students only. B. It was started with many supports.
C. It is funded by schools. D. It earns great profits every year.
6. Which of the following can best describe Ian?
A. Well-educated. B. Honest. C. Boring. D. Caring.
7. What is the best title of the passage?

Sometimes, when Mr. Ballmer and his 16-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, listen to rock music together and talk about pop culture, he remembers his more distant relationship with his parents when he was a teenager. “I would never have said to my mom, ‘Hey, the new Weezer album is really great. How do you like it?’ ” says Ballmer. “There was just a complete gap in taste.” Music was not the only gulf. From clothing and hairstyles to activities and expectations, earlier generations of parents and children often appeared to move in separate orbits (軌道).
Today, the generation gap has not disappeared, but it is getting narrow in many families. Conversations on subjects such as pop culture and sex would not have taken place a generation ago. Now they are comfortable and common. And parent-child activities, from shopping to sports, involve a feeling of trust and friendship that can continue into adulthood.
But family experts warn that the new equality can also result in less respect for parents. “There’s still a lot of strictness and authority on the part of parents out there, but there is a change happening,” says Kerrie, a psychology professor at Lebanon Valley College. “In the middle of that change, there is a lot of confusion among parents.”
Family researchers offer a variety of reasons for these evolving roles and attitudes. They see the 1960s as a turning point. Great cultural changes led to more open communication and at more democratic (民主的) process that encourages everyone to have a say. “It’s not something easily accomplished by parents these days, because life is more difficult to understand or deal with, but sharing interests does make it more fun to be a parent now,” explains Mr. Ballmer.
8. What doesn’t the underlined word “gulf” means in the first paragraph?
A. difference. B. argument. C. balance. D. achievement.
9. What is the change in today’s parent-child relationship?
A. There is less parent-child activities.
B. There is more respect for parents from children.
C. There is a new equality between parents and children.
D. There is more strictness and authority on the part of parents.
10. Which word best describes Kerrie’s attitude to the change of the parent-child relationship?
A. Interested. B. Supportive. C. Indifferent. D. Concerned.
11. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To describe the difficulties today’s parents have met with.
B. To discuss the development of the parent-child relationship.
C. To suggest the ways to handle the parent-child relationship.
D. To solve the problem of the parent-child relationship.
【答案】8. A 9. C 10. D 11. B

【8題詳解】
詞句推測題。根據(jù)第一段“‘There was just a complete gap in taste.’ Music was not the only gulf. From clothing and hairstyles to activities and expectations, earlier generations of parents and children often appeared to move in separate orbits
根據(jù)第二段第一句“Today, the generation gap has not disappeared, but it is getting narrow in many families.(今天,代溝沒有消失,但在許多家庭中正在縮小)”,第三段第一句“But family experts warn that the new equality can also result in less respect for parents.(但家庭專家警告說,這種新的平等也可能導(dǎo)致對父母的尊重減少)”中的new equality可知,當(dāng)今的親子關(guān)系中,代溝越來越小,關(guān)系越來越平等,故選C項。
【10題詳解】
推理判斷題。根據(jù)第三段最后一句“In the middle of that change, there is a lot of confusion among parents(在這種變化的過程中,父母有很多困惑)”可知,Kerrie對這種關(guān)系的變化有些擔(dān)心,故選D項。
【11題詳解】
推理判斷題。通讀全文,第一段通過Ballmer親身經(jīng)歷——以前他和父母有代溝,而他與自己的女兒有共同話題——引出話題:代溝。根據(jù)第二段第一句“Today, the generation gap has not disappeared, but it is getting narrow in many families.(今天,代溝沒有消失,但在許多家庭中正在縮小)”可知,父母和子女的關(guān)系在發(fā)展。根據(jù)第三段最后一句“In the middle of that change, there is a lot of confusion among parents.(在這種變化的過程中,父母之間有很多困惑)”可知,當(dāng)今父母在親子關(guān)系上有困惑。第四段第一句“Family researchers offer a variety of reasons for these evolving roles and attitudes. (家庭研究人員為這些不斷變化的角色和態(tài)度提供了各種各樣的原因)”,闡述了當(dāng)今親子關(guān)系的變化的原因。所以文章的目的是要探討親子關(guān)系的發(fā)展變化。故選B項。
D
As a college student in Boston, I formed the habit of buying used books. I enjoy the hunt, the good price and the unrecognized treasures. I find old textbooks, ex-bestsellers, and books on subjects I’ve never heard of and now must learn all about. I don’t search for rare books, first editions, or leather-bound editions but books that are worth reading.
Rereading, for me, is a pleasure during retirement. The theater and the concert hall become less appealing to me, along with crowds. Staying alone and reading books have become extremely important to me. Literature needs the flesh of experience to have its full effect. Different books offer me insights and ways of expressing that stuck in my mind as grains of sand in an oyster now shine like pearls. My taste in books improves with age.
While packing for a move, which occurs at intervals of five to seven years, I clear my shelves and pick my books. I abandon a few, later regret my decisions, and look for them again. Several years ago, I got rid of books related to my job-architecture. Some were design guides, reference books, product catalogs, and things that went out of date. Some were historical or centered on a period or an architect. These had given me many hours of pleasure. Will I ever open their covers again? Certainly. I held on to the red bulk of Sir Banister Fletcher’s A History of Architecture and books on Paris, Rome, and Boston.
I gave away drafting equipment and instruments. I threw out rolls and rolls of paper, and old drawings of projects completed long ago, some of which had even been damaged. This time, I stay put in a cottage that suits my status and I’ve moved on in spirit. No doubt I will acquire more used books and throw away more books as passions grow and fade, like feathers changing with the seasons.
12. What does the author consider most important when choosing used books?
A. Their appealing covers. B. Their reasonable prices.
C. Their excellent content. D. Their collection value.
13. What does the author realize as he grows older?
A. He has a small circle of friends. B. His attitude towards work changes.
C. His communication skills improve. D. He has a deeper understanding of life and books.
14. Why does the author mention books on architecture?
A. To show some books are worth reading repeatedly.
B. To recommend Sir Banister Fletcher’s books.
C. To suggest we avoid making poor decisions.
D. To explain his love for architecture.
15. What can we learn about the author from the last paragraph?
A. He will stop throwing away used books.
B. He likes updating his collection of used books.
C. He is bad at using advanced drafting equipment.
D. He enjoys leading an active life in the countryside.
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. A 15. B

____17____ High prices are one reason. A ticket can cost around £16 in London. But it’s not only the tickets: prices of snacks in cinemas are often double those in a normal shop. Many people can’t afford to go to the cinema. ____18____ With the rise of TV and film streaming services at home, there are a lot more choices than at the cinema. Lily loved school. However, there was one class Lily worried about more than any other—art. She didn’t know why she just wasn’t any good at drawing, painting, or cutting.
Ms. Clay, the art teacher, stood at the front of the room. “Class, next Friday our school is going to have an art competition,” she announced. Ms. Clay was a great teacher, and Lily liked her a lot. But this announcement made Lily nervous. “Everyone in the school will create a piece of artwork to show in the library. You can use the different types of artwork we have been studying.” Ms. Clay was quite excited when she spoke while Lily found herself sinking lower in her chair.
Lily had the whole weekend to work on her project, but she could not think of anything to do. On Monday, Lily felt frightened, so after school Lily asked Ms. Clay if she could write an art paper instead of doing an art project.
“I understand this project scared you, Lily,” Ms. Clay said. “Just remember, you can create any kind of art you want.” Ms. Clay smiled at her. “Art is a person’s way of expressing his or her feelings—it isn’t always painting, drawing, or cutting. I know you will think of something very creative, and I can’t wait to see it.”
When Lily arrived home, she took out a piece of paper and a pencil. She remembered Ms. Clay’s words. “Art is a person’s way of expressing his or her feelings.” Lily wrote the word “terrified” on her paper. She crumpled (揉皺) the paper and threw it to the side of her desk.
Then Lily stared at the crumpled ball. Suddenly an idea struck her.
Paragraph 1:
Why not create something out of crumpled paper?
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
On Friday, Lily carefully carried her project into the library.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Why not create something out of crumpled paper? The crumpled paper reminded her of a snowball. Lily didn’t have to draw or paint or even cut. Lily made many paper balls, glued them all together, and placed them on a big piece of hard paper to form a snowman. The snowman wore a hat made of black paper and a scarf made of red paper. Her finished project was really wonderful.
On Friday, Lily carefully carried her project into the library. She noticed the smile and the nods from teachers and other students as she put her work on a table. Ms. Clay walked over to Lily. “You have created a creative piece of artwork. I am so proud of you!” Ms. Clay said. Lily was proud of herself too. Her pride grew when Ms. Clay placed a first-place star on her artwork. “Maybe I am a good artist after all,” Lily thought.
