Chen Xingrong, 16, was diagnosed with autism (自閉癥) when he was a baby. After being diagnosed with autism, his father, Chen Xunhu, quit his job and devoted his full attention to the topic of autism. In 2012, Chen Xunhu learned that swimming could help autistic people improve their important ability and articulation (發(fā)音), so he spent months learning how to swim by watching videos and reading books. He spent several months teaching his son and discovered that his son had gradually developed the ability to control his breath under water, which significantly increased his confidence.
The father laid the groundwork for his son’s swimming lessons. Two hand rings and a swing are installed (安裝) from the ceiling by the father to help Chen Xingrong strengthen his muscles and learn swimming movements more precisely. On one wall of their home hangs a table for Chen Xingrong’s routine exercises. “I used to plan all his exercises for him, but now it is all up to him. He decides how many exercises he wants to do, and it’s a process of self-management,” said Chen Xunhu.

Thanks to his father’s perseverance (毅力), Chen Xingrong has learned to buy food and has held voluntary jobs at supermarkets and fast-food restaurants. Meanwhile, Chen Xunhu wants the public to know more about autistic people so as to reduce misunderstanding. He organized about 500 people to watch the autism-themed film, titled Ocean Heaven, which describes how a terminally (末期的) ill father attempts to teach his son the necessary life skills to live without him.
Chen Xunhu has made great efforts to make the public understand autism better and hopes all autistic people will live a wonderful life in the future.

Coffee grown worldwide can date back to the ancient forests of Ethiopia. There, legend says the goat herder Kaldi first discovered coffee bean after he noticed that after eating the fruits from a certain tree, his goats became so energetic that they did not want to sleep at night. Coffee trade began on the Arabian Peninsula. By the 16th century it was known in Persia, Egypt, Syria, and Turkey.
Coffee was hardly known in Europe before the 17th century. The Venetians were the first people to bring coffee into Europe. The first European coffee houses started opening in Italy around 1645. In the following 100 years, at least 3000 coffee houses were operating in England. It was the coffee houses of England that started the custom of tipping waiters and waitresses. In a short time, coffee and coffee houses spread throughout Europe. In 1822, a Frenchman Louis Bernard Rabaut invented a machine which forced the hot water through the coffee grounds using steam instead of merely letting it drip through. The first espresso machine(咖啡機(jī)) had been born.
In the coffee industry, there are two important coffee species—Arabica and Robusta. Arabica originates from the coffee trees discovered in Ethiopia. It represents about 70% of the world’s coffee production. Arabica coffees bring the highest prices on the world market. Meanwhile, these coffee trees require additional care and attention. Robusta is primarily used for instant coffees. The Robusta bean itself tends to be slightly rounder and smaller than an Arabica bean. It can produce a coffee which has a distinctive taste and about 50-60% more caffeine. The Robusta tree is more resistant to disease, which makes it easier and cheaper to grow.
To preserve coffee beans’ fresh roasted flavor as long as possible, you can store them in an air-tight container(容器) at room temperature. Coffee beans can be beautiful, but avoid clear containers which will allow light to influence thee taste of your coffee. Exposure to air is bad for your beans. If you do freeze your beans, be sure to use a truly air-tight container.
8. Where was the coffee bean first discovered?
A. In Egypt. B. In Turkey. C. In Ethiopia. D. In Saudi Arabia.
9. What do we know from paragraph 2?
A. It was the British people who brought coffee to Europe.
B. The custom of tipping came from Italian coffee houses.
C. Drinking coffee became popular before the 17th century.
D. Louis Bernard Rabaut invented the first espresso machine.
10. How is Arabica different from Robusta?
A. Arabica has a higher cost.
B. Arabica contains more caffeine.
C. Arabica beans appear smaller and rounder in size.
D. Arabica accounts for most of the world’s instant coffees.
11. What does the author intend to tell us in the last paragraph?
A. Ways to store coffee beans. B. The process of making coffee.
C. The methods of choosing coffee beans. D. The difficulty of adjusting the taste of coffee.
【答案】8. C 9. D 10. A 11. A

New research suggests that even a simple exercise program might help older people with light memory problems. Doctors have long advised patients to do physical activity to help keep their brains healthy. But the U.S. government-supported research marks the longest study of whether exercise makes any difference once memory starts to decline.
Researchers found around 300 inactive older adults with memory changes called mild cognitive impairment (MCI) (輕度認(rèn)知障礙). In the research, the participants were divided into two groups and half of them did aerobic exercises, while the rest did stretching and balance movements that raised their heart rates a little. After a year, testing of mental activity showed neither group had worsened, said lead researcher Laura Baker of Wake Forest School of Medicine. By comparison, similar MCI patients in another long-term study of brain health—but without exercise—experienced cognitive decline over a year.
Maria Carrillo is the Alzheimer’s Association chief scientific officer. She said earlier research has found regular physical activity of any kind may reduce damaging inflammation and increase blood flow to the brain. She added that the new study is especially interesting because the COVID-19 pandemic began halfway through the study. That meant the study participants became socially isolated. Social isolation has long been known to increase people’s risk of memory problems.
It is a difficult time for dementia(癡呆癥) research. Doctors are not sure about prescribing(開處方) a high-priced new drug called Aduhelm. The drug is supposed to be the first to slow the progression of dementia but it is not yet clear if it really helps patients. Researchers last month reported another drug that works similarly failed in an important study. There is growing urgency to find whether exercise might offer at least some protection. Baker will lead an even larger study of older adults to see if adding exercise to other steps such as a healthy diet, brain games and social activities may reduce the risk of dementia.
12. What does the new study focus on?
A Ways to slow the aging process. B. Effective medicines for elders with MCI.
C. The influence of exercise on elders’ memory. D. The causes of declining memory in older adults.
13. In which aspect were the two groups different in terms of research design?
A. Diet plan. B. Exercise type.
C. Professional background. D. Previous physical condition.
14. What does Maria Carrillo think of the new study?
A. It is meaningful. B. It is impractical.
C. It is controversial. D. It is time-consuming.
15. What will Baker do next according to the text?
A. Find out how to lower the price of Aduhelm.
B. Develop a new drug to help patients with brain diseases.
C. Organize a wide variety of social activities for older people.
D. Conduct further research on how to reduce the risk of dementia.
【答案】12. C 13. B 14. A 15. D

What’s more, it would be a good idea if you take part in family activities regularly. Last but not least, you should not quarrel with them whenever you disagree with them, for that only makes matters worse. The family should be the place of love and laughter.
