It’s funny—as a writer, it’s easy to share your knowledge, or your personal stories with an unknown listener of many. You think your friends and family may not read your articles. But as I began to talk more openly about Chinese traditions and food, I learned that they were interested, curious and really hungered for it. Their interest and curiosity
grew and the culmination of their interest and curiosity was this past Spring Festival. They would like to spend the
Spring Festival with me. It was an inconvenient Monday. I’d never had the Spring Festival when anyone but my father cooked.
I took the day off work in a madness of last-minute preparation. I drove 45 minutes out of town to a Cantonese
BBQ shop where I bought a whole roast duck (烤鴨) and watched, fascinated(入迷的), as it was changed into bite sizes. I shopped at a faraway international market like madwoman, looking for Chinese vegetables and other foods that would be
new for my guests I called my dad, asking for six-second pointers on how to make dishes I’d never made. I texted him
pictures of the sea fish I picked out, and the red clothing they threw on for luck.
In just a few hours, I cooked a dinner of 15 dishes for six friends who cared enough about me and my culture to come over on a cold winter Monday night to celebrate my tradition with me. We drank, ate and toasted the beautiful night. And that night, I felt what it was to be loved for my culture as well as our food.
4.What does the underlined word “culmination” mean in paragraph 1?
A.Top. B.Celebration. C.Tradition. D.Trouble.
5.What did the author do in the BBQ shop?
A.She ate a whole roast duck. B.She took a roast duck.
C.She asked to cook a duck herself. D.She took beautiful photos of the duck.
6.What does the second paragraph mainly talk about?
A.The shops the author went to. B.The author’s love of Chinese food.
C.The author’s preparation for dinner. D.The suggestions the author’s father gave.
7.What can we say about the author from the text?
A.She is living with her father. B.She is a madwoman.
C.She is a world famous writer. D.She is proud of Chinese culture.

Washing clothes by hand sounds like a simple task, but for many women around the world it can do harm to their well-being(幸福;健康) and living. What would you do with your time if you could spend less time washing your clothes? “Paid work,” replied Aleas, a 49-year-old woman from a family of 10 with no access to an electric washing machine. She spent 8-12 hours every week washing everyone’s clothes by hand and described how the required body position of sitting on her feet caused her back pain.
Washing Machine Project provides low-income communities with an accessible washing solution. Its task is to help
women save the time to take charge of their lives. “A mother or a child doesn’t have to spend 20 hours a week washing clothes by hand,” said Nav Sawhney, an engineering student at University of Bath in the UK.
Sawhney has created a movable washing machine that is operated by hand. He came up with the idea when Divya, a
woman he met in southern India, explained the struggle of washing clothes without a machine. This burden is often shouldered by women and girls in many developing countries. Now, Sawhney’s washing machines, which he named Divya after the woman, could greatly reduce the time of washing clothes and allow women and young girls to receive education and have paid work.
After research in Iraq, Lebanon, the Philippines and Jordan, as well as India, Sawhney came up with a machine that
uses only 10 liters of water every time, compared with 30 by a typical electric machine, extremely important in places where water is short. It’s also made out of things that are easy to get and replace, which means it doesn’t need much
money to make it. Sawhney and his volunteers won the support of University of Bath, and already received orders from
Kenya, Nigeria and Uganda.
8.What does washing clothes by hand mean to Aleas?
A.A hard way of making a living.
B.A simple method of killing time.
C.The tiring housework she has to do.
D.The family duty she volunteers to do.
9.Why was the washing machine named after Divya?
A.She inspired the invention. B.She helped with the design.
C.She was the first to order it. D.She thought up the idea first.
10.What can we learn about the washing machine “Divya”?
A.It is cheap and water-saving. B.It is mainly promoted in India.
C.It is shared by a community. D.It is free to use.
11.What is the main purpose of Sawhney’s washing machines?
A.To develop the market in developing countries.
B.To reduce women’s burden in low-income areas.
C.To take the place of traditional washing machines.
D.To wash clothes in an environmentally-friendly way.

Do you need to throw your smartphone away to live your best life? Not necessarily, according to researchers from Ruhr-Universit?t Bochum who suggest that we could all benefit from cutting down on screen time — just only a little bit time.
On average, we spend more than three hours a day glued to our smartphone screens. Between social media, news
feeds, endless video games, and an app for pretty much everything else, there’s always something to draw our attention. In recent years, studies have blamed smartphones for modern problems ranging from rising anxiety rates to neck pain. It begs the question: Are people all really better off switching back to landlines (座機(jī))?
“The smartphone is both a blessing and a curse,” says study leader Dr. Julia Brailovskaia, whose team set out to answer that question by gathering together 619 volunteers, hoping to know how much the smartphone is good for us. Two hundred people put their smartphones completely aside for a week; 226 reduced the amount of time they used the device by one hour a day; 193 people didn’t change anything in their behavior.
Researchers interviewed each person about both their overall lifestyle habits and well-being four months later after
the experimental week ended. “We found that both completely giving up the smartphone and reducing its daily use by one hour had positive effects on the well-being of the participants,” as Brailovskaia sums up the upshots. Notably, changing their smartphone habits for just one week appeared to produce lasting outcomes among subjects. Even four months afterward, participants who were told to avoid using their smartphones totally were using their phones for an average of 38 minutes less per day.
Meanwhile, the “one hour less” group were using their phones as much as 45 minutes less per day after four months.
This group also showed improved life satisfaction, more exercise, and less depression.
“It’s not necessary to completely give up the smartphone to feel better,” Brailovskaia concludes.
12.What’s the purpose of Paragraph 2?
A.To answer the question on the smartphones.
B.To explain why the experiment was done.
C.To state disadvantages of the experiment.
D.To stress the benefits of smartphones.
13.What did the researchers do to the volunteers before testing them?
A.They trained them. B.They interviewed them.
C.They divided them into groups. D.They gave them a physical exam.
14.Which word can replace the underlined word “upshots” in Paragraph 4?
A.Purposes. B.Reasons. C.Doubts. D.Results.
15.What is the best title for the text?
A.Fewer Smartphones, More Well-being
B.No Smartphone Use Is the Best Policy
C.Smartphones Are a Part of Our Lives
D.A Small Smartphone, Two Big Sides

根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,從短文后的選項(xiàng)中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項(xiàng)。選項(xiàng)中有兩項(xiàng)為多余選項(xiàng)。
Ways to Save Money on Healthy Food
Contrary to what you may have heard, eating healthy doesn’t have to be really expensive. Here are expert tips on how to have a healthy diet on a budget (預(yù)算).
____16____
One of the main ways to eat healthier and save money is to cook at home. Instead of going out to buy pre-made healthy food from stores, get the ingredients and make them by yourself. If making entire meals is not your thing, or you don’t have the time, you can make a simple salad.
Shop at your local farmers’ market
____17____. Shopping produce that is in season is a lot cheaper than buying produce that isn’t, and the best place to know what’s in season is at a farmers’ market. Farmers’ markets are budget-friendly because farmers bring their goods directly to customers without interference (介入) from shipping agents, retailers and other go-betweens. ____18____.
Prepare meals in advance
Sometimes the last thing you want to do after a long day is cook. To avoid reaching for the takeout menu in these situations, set aside one day a week to meal preparing. ____19____. To keep it simple and healthy, experts suggest having one source of protein in each meal, at least one vegetable and a whole-grain. Making healthy meals in this way saves you time and money, and makes it easy to eat healthy.
Stock up on frozen produce
Buying frozen fruits and vegetables is a great way to eat healthy on a budget. Frozen produce costs about 30% less
than fresh produce. Plus, fruits and vegetables will last a lot longer and usually can be chopped(切) and ready to go, so you don’t have to spend time washing and cutting. ____20____.
A.Cook at home
B.Eat less meat and dairy
C.Meal preparing doesn’t have to be difficult
D.Make sure you use your produce fully and try not to waste anything
E.Visit your local farmers’ market for fresh and in-season fruits and vegetables
F.If you see a sale on frozen fruits or vegetables, you can buy and store some in the fridge
G.This way you can not only buy fresh and healthy goods but also support the local farmers

My parents came to the US from India in the 1960s, along with other immigrants(移民) from India. Back then, there were few Indians anywhere around the US. My father came to Kansas, where he would get his Ph.D.Six months later, my mother came with the three of us kids — my sister, my brother, and me. We were just six, five and three years old then.
It was the very first winter when we were in Kansas. It was so cold, but we didn’t have heavy coats or warm clothes.
We didn’t have a concept of how cold it really could be in the Midwest, and there was a new surprise every day. We didn’t have a car or anything like that, and my dad didn’t have a US driver’s license. But anyway, my father was studying for his Ph.D., and he would walk up and down a big hill to and from the campus on a regular basis.
Since I was three years old, I didn’t go to school, but my sister and brother were in school. My father had to walk down the big hill to take them to school every day and then walk back up the hill to go to university. After about three weeks of living like this, a woman called Valerie, whose son John was in the same class as my brother, started noticing
them. On a very cold snowy morning, when they went to school as usual,Valerie passed by. She pulled up and said, “I see
you on the way every day. Don’t you feel cold without coats?”My father responded,“We didn’t expect the weather would be so cold in Kansas.”Valerie said,“Maybe I can take your daughter and son to school. Would you like a ride?”

作文
Dear Ms Chen,
I’m Li Jin, a student from Class 2, Senior 2. Knowing that you are looking for volunteers to provide service for Talent Show, Speech Contest, and English Debate, I’m writing to apply for it.
I really want to take this precious opportunity because, by offering my service, I will be able
to improve my organizational ability, communication skills as well as my confidence in speaking English in public.
As an outgoing girl, I get along well with my classmates. In addition, having a good
command of English makes me qualified for this position. What’s more, served as representative
of English in my class, I have lent a helping hand to my English teacher in several activities,
which have been appreciated by both teachers and classmates. Therefore, I think I’m fit for the job. Besides, if I am honored enough to be accepted a volunteer, I will spare no effort to let more
people get involved in the Cultural Festival.
I am sure that I can perfectly live up to your expectations. If you could give me a consideration, I won’t let you down.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours truly, Li Jin
