Perhaps you would watch an original performance of a Shakespeare’s play in Elizabethan England? What about hanging out with Laozi in the Spring and Autumn Period? Or maybe you’d voyage far ahead of the present day to see what the future holds. The possibility of time travel is indeed appealing. Stories exploring the subject have been around for hundreds of years. Perhaps the best known example is science fiction novel The Time Machine, which was written by H.G. Wells and published in 1895 for the first time. It was adapted into at least two feature films of the same name, as well as two television versions, and a large number of comic book adaptations. It is generally credited with the popularization of the concept of time travel using a vehicle that allows an operator to travel purposefully and selectively. The term “time machine”, coined by Wells, is now universally used to refer to a vehicle transporting people into the far future. But could time travel actually be possible? Some scientists say yes,in theory. They propose using cracks in time and space called “wormholes”, which could be used as shortcuts to other periods. Einstein’s theory of relativity allows time travel in extreme circumstances. And British physicist Stephen Hawking says you could travel into the future with a really fast spaceship—going at nearly the speed of light. Though building such a spaceship would of course be no simple task.Even if you could travel into the past, there is something called the “grandfather paradox”. It asks what would happen if a time traveler were to go back in time and have his own grandfather killed for some reason, and therefore prevent himself from being born. If the time traveler wasn’t born, how would he travel back in time? And would you really like to visit the future? In H.G.Wells’ book, the main character travels into distant time where he arrives at a beach and is attacked by giant crabs. He then voyages 30 million years into the future where the only living thing is a black object with tentacles(觸角).If that’s what’s in store, maybe we are better just living in the present day after all.【語篇解讀】時光穿梭可能實(shí)現(xiàn)嗎? A D C  B 1.The novel The Time Machine mentioned in Paragraph 2 aims to show . A.people’s interest in time travelB.the special feature of the bookC.the long history of time travelD.the contribution of H.G.Wells【解析】細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)第二段中的“The possibility of time travel is indeed appealing”可知,時光穿梭的可能性的確是很吸引人,所以選A項(xiàng)。2.Einstein’s and Hawking’s theories . A.have similarities in many waysB.push the invention of the first spaceshipC.have proved wrong by some time travelersD.suggest the possibility to invent the time machine【解析】細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)第三段提到的“Einstein’s theory of relativity allows time travel in extreme circumstances. And British physicist Stephen Hawking says you could travel into the future with a really fast spaceship—going at nearly the speed of light”可知,愛因斯坦的相對論允許在極端的環(huán)境下時光穿梭;英國物理學(xué)家斯蒂芬·霍金說你可以用快速的宇宙飛船到未來旅行。 3.In Paragraph 4,“grandfather paradox” probably refers to the idea that . A.the traveler is prevented from meeting his grandfatherB.the traveler goes back in time to seek for his grandfatherC.the grandfather’s death makes the traveler’s birth impossibleD.The reunion of the traveler and his grandfather brings happiness【解析】推理判斷題。根據(jù)第四段提到的“It asks what would happen if a time traveler were to go back in time and have his own grandfather killed for some reason, and therefore prevent himself from being born”可知,如果時光穿梭者回到過去,他的祖父因?yàn)槟撤N原因而被殺死,那么時光旅行者就無法出生。 4.What is probably the author’s attitude towards time travel?A.Unclear. B.Skeptical.     C.Supportive. D.Unconcerned.【解析】推理判斷題。根據(jù)最后一段中的“If that’s what’s in store, maybe we are better just living in the present day after all”可知,如果這樣的事情發(fā)生,我們還是最好活在現(xiàn)在,所以作者對時光穿梭持懷疑的態(tài)度,所以選B項(xiàng)。Ⅴ.七選五The man who could see the futureThe ability to predict the future is a rare talent. American author Isaac Asimov (1920—1992),one of the great science fiction writers of his age, had such a talent. 5 Now that we’re here, let’s see what he got right.  6 Asimov thought computers would cause a revolution comparable to the industrial revolution of the 19th century. Specifically, he said that “mobile computerized objects” would be an important part of everyday life. Here, he clearly predicted our world of smartphones, tables and other devices. He also had a great deal to say about space exploration. 7  How did Asimov develop his special sense of future developments? 8 He read the newspapers and magazines sold in his parents’ candy store. His scientific interest gained sharper focus at Columbia University in New York. Asimov went to study chemistry, but became bored with pure laboratory science. Instead, he thought hard about the social implications(作用) of science. He wanted to communicate his ideas to the public.  9 Asimov had his finger on the pulse(脈搏)of both scientific and social change. He had a clear vision of what was coming around the corner for humanity in his works like the Galactic Empire series(《銀河帝國系列》).“His predictions are absolutely fascinating,” Calum Chase,an English writer, told BBC News. “He was a genius.” A.As a smart boy, Asimov taught himself to read at the age of five.B. Space exploration really can make our life more convenient and comfortable.C.Back in 1983,he was asked to predict what the world would look like in 2019.D.  On the role that computing would play in the future, he was amazingly accurate.E. Asimov has developed a great interest in computer programming since childhood.F.As an author, his books would feature the theme of social change caused by technology.G. The International Space Station proves his prediction that we would not simply visit space but seek to stay there. 6.D 根據(jù)“Asimov thought computers would cause a revolution comparable to the industrial revolution of the 19th century”可知,阿西莫夫認(rèn)為計算機(jī)將引發(fā)一場與19世紀(jì)工業(yè)革命相當(dāng)?shù)母锩?/span>D項(xiàng)關(guān)于計算機(jī)在未來將所扮演的角色,他驚人準(zhǔn)確地預(yù)測了是說明他預(yù)測的計算機(jī)的結(jié)果,與本段內(nèi)容符合。7.G 根據(jù)“He also had a great deal to say about space exploration”可知,關(guān)于太空探索,他也預(yù)測了。 8.A 根據(jù)“He read the newspapers and magazines sold in his parents’ candy store”可知,他讀了父母糖果店出售的報紙和雜志。 VI完形填空(共20小題;每小題1.5分,滿分30分) Madison Williams, aged 13 ,was studying in her bedroom in Dublin, Ohio.
