For more than a decade, Nancy Richards Farese has been taking heartwarming photos of children around the world. Throughout her travels, the American photographer has noticed a common characteristic (特點(diǎn)) that seems to go beyond cultures. “They play no matter what’s going on,” she said on a video all.
When Nancy Richards Farese visited Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, she took photos of the poor children there. Among the hardship, children played with what they made for themselves. They blew pinwheels (玩具風(fēng)車(chē)) and pulled a water bottle as a toy with wheels and an old rope. She said, “The other adults and I had a thought of the seriousness of this situation. We were sorry they were in a difficult situation. However, the kids were actually doing something, quite naturally, to help themselves feel good.”
Farese’s new book brings together almost 100 photos she has shot while examining children’s play across 14 countries. Her young subjects play chess in Jordan and in Cuba; they jump, laugh and run; they kick and throw balls, climb and jump ropes. Dolls and kites often appear, Many games are seemingly global.
The photographer said, “We sometimes pay no attention to the importance of playing, but when you talk to scientists, they will say it is one of the most fundamental (基本的) things we ever do in our lives. It is something we were born with. It helps shape our ideas and other characteristics. It’s just interesting to realize that our abilities to work together, to understand tolerance (容忍) are just simple developmental sides that we practice in a game. And they are so important.”
“We move through the world every day with this treasure. We should allow ourselves to play as a regular practice—to be creative, to set aside even five minutes every day as a time when we’re in nature,” she added.
24. How did the poor children in Cox’s Bazar make themselves feel good?
A. By taking pictures.
B. By making video calls.
C. By asking the adults for help.
D. By making their own toys to play with.
25. What does the photographer think of playing in the growth of children?
A. Natural. B. Difficult. C. Creative. D. Useless.
26. What does Farese advise us to do?
A. Play with the children.
B. Allow children to play in nature.
C. Think of some special ways to play.
D. Spend time playing and relaxing ourselves.
27. In which of the following can we most probably find this text?
A. A diary. B. A magazine. C. A travel guide. D. A history book.

Science experiments don’t always go as planned, but that doesn’t mean you can’t learn from them. Recently, Australian scientists learned something unexpected about magpies (喜鵲) when they tried to put trackers (跟蹤儀) on them to learn more about their habits.
The birds the scientists hoped to study were Australian magpies. They are known to be quite clever. They live in groups of up to 12 birds and work together to protect the area they live in.
The researchers wished to try a new tracker on the magpies. They hoped to learn more about how far the birds fly and what they do during a normal day. The scientists are concerned that magpies may have a hard time adjusting (適應(yīng)) to the environment as the world warms up because of climate (氣候) change.
To keep the tackers on the birds without causing flying problems, the researchers developed a special harness, by which they can fix tackers to magpies. It was tough, so it wouldn’t come off by accident.
There was just one problem—the birds didn’t like the trackers. The researchers placed trackers on five magpies using their special harnesses. But just ten minutes after setting up the last magpie, they noticed something unusual: An adult female magpie was helping another magpie get free from its harness.
In a few hours, most of the other magpies had also been freed from their harnesses. By the third day, none of the birds had trackers anymore. “The birds are much cleverer than we thought,” said Dominique Potvin, one of the scientists.
The scientists were disappointed about the trackers, but they realized that the magpies had taught them something else: Magpies are able and willing to help each other out, even if the bird who is helping gets nothing from others.
This is called “rescue behavior”, and it ’s not that common in the animal world, especially among birds. The researchers are glad they’ve learned about the rescue behavior of magpies. But now they need to think about a good way to track these clever birds.
32. Why did scientists fix trackers to magpies?
A. To improve the trackers.
B. To know of magpies’ habits.
C. To test the use for the trackers.
D. To find out the magpie’s population.
33. What are scientists worried about in paragraph 3?
A. The little food for magpies.
B. Magpies’ long distance flying.
C. The damage caused by climate change.
D. Magpies having trouble getting used to climate change.
34. What can we learn about magpies from the last two paragraphs?
A. They will have little room to live in.
B. They offer each other help willingly.
C. They just want to be praised for their behavior.
D. They are the most clever animals in the world.
35. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. Magpies Teach Scientists An Unexpected Lesson
B. Climate Change Makes Magpies More Difficult
C. The Trackers Help Magpies Get Used To Nature
D. Magpies Are Adjusting To The Trackers On Their Bodies

On one stormy afternoon last year, I was running home from school with my umbrella when I heard a bird start to sing. Out of curiosity, I went to have a look. Then I saw a brightly colorful bird nesting in a big tree. But the nest suddenly fell off.
With mercy and love, I decided to see if the bird had a chance to survive. Just as I went closer, I noticed a little head sticking out of the nest. I found that it had a wet broken wing, so it couldn’t fly. It looked so weak as if it were dying. So I placed it gently in my hand and covered it with my umbrella.
I carefully took it home and thought down the road how to explain this to my parents. What if they would not want it and throw it away? I could not take that chance, so I went out and put it in the back garden and gave it a warm blanket for the night.
In the following days, I went to school as usual, but somehow, I fell in love with biology class, especially when the teacher explained something about birds. I learned to feed the bird, and I hurried to care for it when the school was over. It was slowly recovering and growing. Holiday came at last. I couldn’t help telling my good friends about it. Then we secretly went to the back garden to look at my lovely bird. However, we were amazed to find that it had been missing.
Just as I thought where it had gone, a great surprise came all of a sudden. I found it staring at my cat in the distance. Catching sight of my appearance, it turned and came towards me. So I went to get it some water and birdseed. It was then that I found it grew into a big bird like a phoenix (鳳凰) in the fairy tale. My friends all praised it, “What a beautiful bird it is!” Hearing their words, I felt truly proud. Fortunately, my care was not in vain but paid off.

M: Yes, certainly. Well, we are a sort of social club for people from different countries. It’s quite a new club—we have about 50 members at the moment, but we are growing all the time.
W: That sounds interesting. I’m British actually, and I came to Washington about three months ago. I’m looking for ways to meet people. Er, what kinds of events do you organize?
M: Well, we have social get-togethers, and sports events, and we also have language evenings.
W: Could you tell me something about the language evenings?
M: Yes. Every day except Thursday we have a language evening. People can come and practice their languages—you know, over a drink or something. We have different languages on different evenings. Monday—Spanish; Tuesday—Italian; Wednesday—German; and Friday—French. On Thursday we usually have a meal in a restaurant for anyone who wants to come.
W: Well, that sounds great. I really need to practice my French.

M: Yes, of course.
W: OK. See you tomorrow.

W: You look upset. Are you OK, Tommy?
M: I’m fine, Mum. It’s just your cell phone. You lent it to me this morning.
W: Yes? Is there anything wrong with it? Or... No! Don’t tell me you dropped and broke it.
M: No, I was texting Jack outside a store when somebody ran past and grabbed it.
W: You mean someone robbed my phone?
M: I’m afraid so. Everything just happened so suddenly.
W: You reported it to the police then?
M. Well, not yet.
W: Turn to a policeman nearby right now.
M: OK.

W: You know, we can do something we haven’t done for a long time. I’d like to go on a picnic. Where could we go? Over to the park?
M: No, I want to drive out into the country, find some place away from the highway and have a real old-fashioned picnic lunch with fried chicken, potato salad, fish, chips and lemonade.
W: Sounds like a good idea. Why don’t we go this Sunday?
M: I can’t make it. I’m busy writing the report on the study of western food all weekend, but next Saturday and Sunday I will be free.
W: Let’s make some preparations on Saturday and start out the next day.
M: OK. It’s a date. You get what we need for the lunch and I’ll provide the car.

W: Oh, Peter. It’s been ages. What kept you so long?
M: I’m sorry, Sally.
W: It doesn’t matter. I’ve been reading this guidebook for tourists and I’ve had a coffee. What would you like to drink?
M: I’d love cold water.
W: The waitress will be back in a moment. Why were you so late? Has anything happened?
M: Yes. I went to the bank to cash some checks. When I went to the bank clerks, they told me the compute system was down, so I waited. And then I started talking to another guy in the bank.
W: Oh, really? Does he work there?
M: No, his name is Henry, and he has been here for a week, but he’s moving on to Germany tomorrow. He’s spending four weeks traveling around Europe.
W: Just like us!
M: Yeah. He also gave me this map of the bus system.
W: That’s useful. Pity he’s moving on tomorrow.

M: Hello! I’m Harvard Smith. As the editor of The Voice, I’d like to introduce you to our school daily newspaper. We need volunteers to help us with our newspaper. Experience isn’t necessary. But we need people with writing and typing skills. Since The Voice comes out five days a week, we need excellent students who know how to plan their time well. Good grades are necessary. We can pay you, depending on your work. But don’t expect to get rich. This isn’t something you do for money. Mostly it’s just for fun. Anyone who is interested in this job should speak to me immediately after this meeting. Be prepared to start right now. The firs issue goes to press tomorrow.

第一節(jié)
參考范文:
Dear Mike,
Glad to receive your email. Next week, I’ve planned to visit the nearby city, Xi’an, with my parents, which is scheduled from Friday evening to Sunday morning.
Xi’an is an old city with a long history and there are many amazing attractions. We’ll visit the Terra-Cotta Warriors Museum on Saturday and go to Grand Tang Dynasty Ever-bright City to experience the glory of the flourishing age the next day. Not only can we admire the magnificent scene, but also we can taste all kinds of delicious food.
The above is my plan. What about yours? Looking forward to your reply!
Yours
Li Hua
第二節(jié)
參考范文:
Suddenly, my parents appeared in the back garden. At first, I was a little nervous because I hid the truth about it. At that time, I had to ask them, “May I have a phoenix-like bird as a pet?” To my great relief, Mum looked at the bird and me in surprise and said, “You can keep it as long as you could take care of it.” I reacted quickly, “I promise.” But Dad added thoughtfully, “But dear, birds belong to nature. They need a wider world.”
Some days later, my friends and I wondered what to do with the bird. My best friend offered to ask for our biology teacher for help. Everyone thought it was a good idea. After learning the details of the bird’s release, we decided to set it free. It was another afternoon, we came to the woods, where the streams were flowing, and the birds were singing in the trees. We believed it was a good place for my lovely bird to live in. Watching the bird flapping its wings and flying away, we all cheered.
