Haley Curfman, 25, of Blackwell, Oklahoma, is a teacher at Blackwell Public School and last year she bought a plain(樸素的) white dress, which she set up a station in her classroom for her students to decorate, encouraging them to go and draw on the dress whenever they had free time. Haley set up a station at a table with the dress and some colored markers so that her students could draw on it, having first seen the idea on Pinterest.
After the kids had finished the design, she then surprised them all by wearing the dress to class, sharing pictures of herself in it on Facebook in a post that has since been shared over 200, 000 times.
For teachers looking to do something similar for their own students, Haley said that she bought the dress off Amazon for less than $ 20 about six months ago and pre-washed the dress before she started the project. She used markers from Walmart. But she said these things can be bought in other places. She said, “To do the project, I set up a station at a table with the dress and markers. It takes anywhere from two weeks to a month to complete as we just work on it here and there when time allows. You'd better give the students enough time so they don't have to hurry.”
“Teachers have been sharing their dresses, T-shirts, etc. with me that they've been creating since the 1950s with the same idea. It is amazing, and I love the fact that you are sharing them with me! Thank you all so much for your kindness and support,” she wrote on Facebook.
Asked why she came up with the idea, Haley told Scary Mommy. “We don't have art in our school, so, I always try to do little creative projects when possible.”
24.What did Haley use the plain white dress to do?
A.To teach her students painting.
B.To prepare for her presentation.

D.To help her students with their homework.
25.What do we know about the finished dress?
A.It took Haley by surprise. B.It is kept by Haley at home.
C.It is the product of a new idea. D.It has enjoyed popularity online.
26.What should a teacher do if he or she wants to follow Haley's example?
A.Buy the same dress online.
B.Give the kids enough time.
C.Buy the same markers in Walmart.
D.Leave the finished work untouched.
27.Why did Haley carry out the project?
A.To teach art to her students. B.To show her idea on Pinterest.
C.To share it with other teachers. D.To excite her students' creativity.

People worldwide are living longer. Today, for the first time in history, most people can expect to live into their sixties and beyond. By 2050, the world’s population aged 60 years and older is expected to total 2 billion, up from 900 million in 2015. Today, 125 million people are aged 80 years or older. By 2050, there will be almost this many (120 million) living in China alone, and 434 million people in this age group worldwide.
The pace of population ageing around the world is also increasing dramatically. France had almost 150 years to adapt to a change from 10% to 20% in the proportion of the population that was older than 60 years. However, places such as Brazil, China and India will have slightly more than 20 years to make the same adaptation.
A longer life brings with it opportunities, not only for older people and their families, but also for societies as a whole. Additional years provide the chance to undertake new activities such as further education, a new career or a long ignored passion. Older people also contribute in many ways to their families and communities. Yet the extent of these opportunities and contributions depends heavily on one factor: health.
There is, however, little evidence to suggest that older people today are experiencing their later years in better health than their parents. While rates of severe disability have declined in high-income countries over the past 30 years, there has been no significant change in mild or moderate disability over the same period.
If people can experience these extra years of life in good health and if they live in a supportive environment, their ability to do the things they value will be of little difference from that of a younger person. If these added years are affected by declines physically and mentally, the results for older people and for society are more negative.
28. What does the author want to tell in the first paragraph?
A. The whole world is faced with the problem of ageing.
B. Some countries witness people live longer than before.
C. China has the highest rate of ageing population at present.
D. By 2050, over half of the world’s population is ageing.
29. What is the most important for the ageing society?
A. The attitude of the older to life.
B. The contributions the older make.
C. The health of the older people.
D. The activities the older take part in.
30. What is the author’s attitude to the ageing world?
A. Concerned. B. Objective.
C. Negative. D. Astonished.
31. What’s the author’s statement about ageing based on?
A. His own opinion. B. Some data.
C. Causes and effects. D. Comparisons.

To solve the problem of tiny plastics polluting waterways, chemists in the Czech Republic are thinking small. Their brainchild is a new microrobot which is no bigger than the tip of a sharpened pencil. When sunlight hits them, they produce chemical reactions that push them through water in a specific direction. When they find a piece of plastic, they stick to it and start to break it down.
Chemist Martin Pumera at the Czech University led the project. A decade ago, he chose to focus on the problem posed by microplastics. They’re everywhere—from the bottom of the ocean to air blowing onto ice atop mountains. They’ve turned up in drinking water. Some studies estimate that billions of pieces of plastic end up in the world’s waters. The plastic has many sources, from shopping bags to washing and cleaning wipes.
In lab experiments, the star-shaped swimmers stuck onto each of four different types of plastic. And after a week exposed to light, the robots had reduced the weight of the plastics. It wasn’t much—only by percent. But that was an indication that they were breaking the plastic down. They also caused the surface of the plastic to change from smooth to rough. That’s another sign that the robots were degrading (分解) it. The new study is a proof of concept type. That means it shows something can be done successfully.
In fact, Pumera says they still have a long way to go. There are many types of plastics. And even these microrobots are unlikely to succeed in degrading them all. The researchers also have not yet shown how safe this system is for the environment, although Pumera says that’s their next goal. The first real-world test will be in a wastewater-treatment plant. “Indeed,” says one researcher. “We’ll need a lot of testing to show that they’re safe in open waterways, such as at sea.”
32.What does the underlined word “brainchild” in paragraph 1 refer to?.
A.idea B.hope C.project D.routine
33.What does the author focus on in Paragraph 2?
A.The purpose of Pumera’s project.
B.The preciousness of drinking water.
C.The seriousness of plastic pollution.
D.The working principle of the microrobots.
34.What shows the effectiveness of the microrobots in lab experiments?
A.The weight loss of the plastics.
B.The disappearance of the plastics.
C.The shape change of the microrobots.
D.The improvement in the quality of water.
35.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.Ways to Obtain Cleaner Drinking Water
B.Microrobots Invented to Treat Wastewater
C.New Hope for the Solution to Plastic Pollution

Most students seem to have considerable “test anxiety”. 36 If you do this, you will not be able to show what you are really able to accomplish. Here are some suggestions that you should consider.
37
Waiting until the night before a test to start studying is likely to increase your anxiety. Instead of waiting until the last minute, start studying as soon as a test is scheduled. With several days or even a week to prepare, you'll feel more relaxed because you have plenty of time to learn the materials.
Organize your materials
It's important to gather all of your materials, including your books, notes, and other studying tools before a big exam. Keeping them all in order and handy is a great way to make sure that you can reference and cross reference them. 38
Review your notes each night.
Reviewing your notes daily will help you to organize the materials for yourself. Don’t expect that your understanding will come during the class. 39 You need to spend time thinking about the course outside of class.
Get a good night's sleep before the exam.
Staying up too late the night before an exam is a bad idea, in general. If you do just one thing, this is it: get enough sleep the night before your exam. Sleep, particularly deep sleep, is critical to memory formation. Make it a practice to get a good night's rest after any intense day of learning and studying. 40
A. Draw up a schedule.
B. Learning simply doesn't work that way.
C. Leave yourself plenty of time for studying.
D. Most students suffer mental illness when preparing for a test
E. It will help your brain to keep as much information as possible after a good night’s sleep.
F. Many talk themselves out of doing well before they even have the exam.
G. This will also make your life a lot easier when you are buried in your studying.

The skies were dark. A strong wind was blowing hard, cutting my face like a sharp knife. Rain fell in big drops and thunder and lightning flashed across the skies. I shook with cold and fear as I walked home, through the streams of muddy water. Some people were rushing by, completely wet in the heavy rain.
Along the way, I saw some schoolchildren holding their heavy schoolbags tightly and rushing home, I also saw that some road repair work had been abandoned(遺棄) by workers. Obviously, the workers had left in a hurry because of the storm. There were few signs and it was hard to see what was on the road. There were pieces of wood and metal and it looked like a hole had been dug and hurriedly covered with boards.
I moved on but suddenly stopped as I heard some sounds. It sounded like children crying. I quickly turned back and went back to the place from where the sounds came. I was frightened! To my sadness, I found that two small children had fallen into the hole on the road. The boards had moved away with the force of the rushing water. I could hardly see the children as it was dark all around me. I told them that I was going to look for help. I knew the neighbors well, and they all shared a sense of neighborliness, willing to give a hand.

【應(yīng)用文參考范文】
The Person I Respect
There are many respectable people around us. As for me, my father is the one I respect. He is a doctor and always takes a positive attitude towards life.
As a doctor, he is patient and devoted to his job. In March, 2020, he volunteered to go to Wuhan to help those suffering from COVID-19 despite the risk of being infected, which help me promote the understanding of bravery and responsibility. As a father, not only does he care about my life, but also inspires me to set a high aim and strive for it.
He has always been a good example for me and I love him a great deal.
【讀后續(xù)寫參考范文】
Para 1: I rushed to the nearest house, Mr. Lee’s, and told him about the problem. He readily said that he would get a torch and some rope. He also called his good friends to come along with him. When we went back to the hole, the children were crying louder and louder, shaking all over with cold and scare. Struggling with the heavy rain, we managed to get the children out of the watery hole safely and wrapped them with a blanket to keep them warm. When we were comforting the children, their worried parents hurriedly came.
Para 2:Hearing of what had happened, the children’s parents were in relief. They were very grateful to the neighbors who had helped to rescue the children and thanked them repeatedly. A flood of happiness welled up in me because I had been part of this act of neighborliness. It was a wonderful moment, one I would never forget. The neighbors had been great. They had helped people in need without hesitation. Bathed in much warmth, I headed for home.

Text 1
W: Oh, what a pretty dress! My daughter would love it. But it seems a bit too large. Do you have a smaller size?
M: Sorry, this is the only one left. But don’t worry. Children grow fast.
W: Yes, that’s true. I’ll take it.
Text 2
W: These DVDs will be due back on Thursday, the 7th.
M: How much more should we pay to keep them another week?
Text 3
M: What did you think of Dana’s speech today?
W: Well, she must have spent a lot time preparing it. I can’t believe I can sit for that long without feeling bored.
Text 4
W: Could you help us carry these boxes, sir?
M: Oh, I would like to help you, but I’ve got a pain in my back.
Text 5
W: I wonder if Simon would be here by 8:00. He’s supposed to be.
M: His wife said he left at 7:30, so he should be here by 8:10 at the latest.
Text 6
M: Are you free on the weekend?
W: I haven’t got any plans yet, why?
M: There is an exhibition of Chinese paintings at the public library. Would you like to go with me?
W: I’d love to, but when?
M: How about Saturday morning? It’s cooler in the morning and maybe less crowded.
W: I’m afraid I can not get up early on weekends. I’d prefer Saturday afternoon. Believe me there won’t be too many people.
M: So, shall we meet at 2:00, Saturday afternoon?
W: OK, that would be great. I’ll be waiting for you at my home.
Text 7
W: Did you have a busy week?
M: Emm, well, no. I mean I didn’t do a lot, but I bought a computer.?
W: You did? Thank godness. Now you don’t need to borrow mine. You had it for two weeks last time.
M: Yeah, so sorry about that. I wrote my history paper on it. Thanks again, by the way.
W: Sure, no problem. So how do you like your computer?
M: Oh, it’s really cool. I use it everyday.
W: Really? Are you using it for class? I mean you’re working on the paper now, right?
M: Emm, yeah, yeah, but I don’t use it for class.
W: So what do you use it for?
M: Emm, actually, I just watch DVDs on it all week.

M: Look at this armchair. What do you think?
W: Oh, I’m not sure I like the design. It’s too heavy looking. Is it comfortable?
M: Try it.
W: Hmm. It’s really comfortable! And I’d like to have something this size. Our old armchair is way too small. This size is perfect.
M: What do you think of the color?
W: Well, green isn’t my favorite color, but it’s better than that terrible brown one we have now. It’s okay, I guess. But blue would be perfect.
M: How much is it?
W: Oh, no. It’s $999. That’s really too expensive. We can’t afford it right now.
M: I know. Why don’t we wait till next month for their mid-year sale? It might be cheaper then.
W: Hey, that’s a good idea!
Text 9
W: Hey, James, how is the job search going?
M: Hi, Sharon, I had no idea. It’ll take so much time. It sure makes it difficult to prepare for final exams. How about you?
W: I was lucky. There seems to be a shortage of highschool teachers now. I applied to three schools and each one offered me a position.
W: I haven’t decided yet. Of course, it will be easiest for me to stay here in New York or go back home to Boston, but I may go to California.
M: That will be a big move.
W: So tell me about your plans?
M: Well, I applied to six newspapers. Last week, I had an interview with New York Times.
W: How did it go?
M: Not so well. I think they are looking for people with some experience.
W: Have you had any other interviews?
M: No, not yet. It seems that everyone wants to be a writer these days. There just aren’t many jobs out there.
W: That’s too bad.
M: Yes, I had a hope to have a job lined up by graduation. That doesn’t seem likely now.
W: What will you do if you can’t find a job?
M: In that case, I’ll begin working on the master’s degree in the fall.
W: Good luck.
Text 10
M: Welcome to London this December! There’s plenty going on this month. For example, on 1 December, London’s West End, the capital’s best shopping district, has its largest ever traffic-free day. More than a million visitors are expected to shop and enjoy various activities while Oxford Street and Regent Street are completely closed to cars and buses. Shoppers will be able to move around the streets, visiting our famous department stores, and having a bite at one of the many cafes and restaurants in the area. Trafalgar Square’s Christmas tree, a gift to London from Norway, will be lit at 6 p.m. on 6 December to the sounds of traditional Christmas songs. Then, every evening from 10 December until 23 December, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., people will sing Christmas songs in this beautiful setting. Lastly, ring in the New Year with the capital’s largest fireworks show. Although the fireworks will be set off at the British Airways London Eye, they can be enjoyed from across London and will also be broadcast on television at the same time. Then, just a few hours later, come out and see London’s colorful New Year’s Day parade, when marching performers from around the world pass through the capital’s streets. Enjoy your time in our city.
