If you see a group of kids hitting and abusing an animal, would you stop them? Would you at least call the police? Again people would walk away. Some people do not believe that animal abuse is a big issue.
Every day animals are abused in their homes or on the streets. It seems as if politicians do nothing to stop this issue. Everyone is worried about education and global warming. What about animals? We should not ignore them just because they cannot talk to us. Animals, like us humans, have rights. Every living being has the right to warm shelter and good food, but most importantly, they have the right to be wanted and loved. They have the right to be a special, much loved member of their own family.
There are many organizations that deal with abused animals or animals that have no home like ASPCA, PETA, the Humane Society and many more. There are organizations that deal with this issue, but that does not mean that we still shouldn’t help. The biggest saying that bothers me is, “I am only one person. I can’t make a difference.” If everyone thought like that, we wouldn’t have the organizations and loving people who help the world every day. By helping one animal, you are making a difference.
There are many things you can do right now to help animals around your neighborhood. You can volunteer at your local animal shelter, raise money for animal shelters, inform your community about animal abuse or you can write to your representatives and tell them that animal abuse needs to be taken seriously.
Always remember that with every step you take, you help save an animal’s life !
25. Some people won’t stop kids from abusing animals because ______.
A. they are too busy to worry about the animals
B. they don’t take animal abuse seriously
C. they just leave it to the police
D. they are afraid of being laughed at
26. Which of the following statements will the author agree with?
A. Dogs have the right to be treated kindly.
B. One person cannot possibly make a difference.
C. Cruelty to animals deserves more attention than global warming.
D. It is the politicians’ duty to stop animal abuse.
27. We can learn from the text that ASPCA _____.
A. is another name for the Humane Society
B. provides shelter for both animals and humans
C. deals with such issues as education and global warming
D. aims at protecting animals from being abused
28. The main purpose of the text is to ______.
A. criticize those who abuse animals B. call on people to help abused animals
C. show how animals are abused D. explain why people abuse animals
C
Italy adopted a new law to cut down food waste — the second such law in Europe, joining France's. So what's the United States doing with the 30 percent of its food that is simply thrown away? Italy's Senate gave final approval(批準) to encourage businesses, shops and restaurants to donate their unused food to charities. That's a practice that historically hasn't been a part of Italian culture, which discards more than 17 percent of its food every year.
Calling Italy's level of food waste unacceptable, Agriculture Minister Maurizio Martina told the newspaper La Repubblica, "With this law, we get closer and closer to the aim of recovering a million tons of food and giving it to those who need it." The U.S. Agriculture Department's Economic Research Service says that more than 30 percent of the U.S. food supply goes to waste — 133 billion pounds of it every year, equal to $161 billion. "In a world full of hunger and changeable food prices, these statistics(統(tǒng)計數(shù)字) are more than just appalling," according to the North American office of the U.N. Environment Program. "More surprisingly, most of the waste food is completely healthy food that could have helped feed poor families," the Agriculture Department says.
Several government efforts are under way. The Agriculture Department and the Environmental Protection Agency, for example, set a goal last year of cutting what they called "food loss" in half by 2030. The idea is to improve product development, storage, marketing and cooking methods and recycle food waste to feed animals.
Meanwhile, legislation(立法) in both houses of Congress aims at food waste and pays more attention to educating buyers on what different labels(標簽) really mean so that they don't throw away perfectly good food. Research by the Harvard Food Law and Policy Clinic found that 45 percent of all food waste happens in the home, for buyers' confusion over the importance of date labels — which aren't based on any science and aren't controlled by the government.
29. What does Maurizio Martina think of Italy's level of food waste?
A. It has become very serious.
B. It is not as serious as America's.
C. It has been successfully controlled in recent years.
D. It is the most serious among all European countries.
30. What does the underlined word "appalling" in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?
A. Interesting. B. Exciting. C. Encouraging. D. Shocking.
31. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Most food waste happens in restaurants.
B. Some buyers don't get into the habit of saving food.
C. It is the government's duty to control the food waste.
D. Some buyers don't realize the importance of the date labels.
D
Do you like writing a few paragraphs every day about your experiences, hopes, memories or feelings? If you don't, it's time to make a change now. Here is why.
You will gradually become better at expressing yourself. When I am forced to write every day because of a book deadline(最后期限), I am always amazed at how quickly my writing and verbal(口頭的) communication skills improve. When we become lazy with words, it is more difficult to describe feelings, share experiences and make ourselves understood.
You will remember things long forgotten. As you write about memories, it is like opening an old photo album. Your pen begins to explore feelings and details you have forgotten, and dreams you have left behind. You suddenly remember people you would like to contact again. Writing is an activity that avoids distractions(分心) long enough for you to explore those wonderful moments of the past. Sometimes they are frightening. Sometimes they are wonderful and almost always they are helpful.
Writing about daily experiences and feelings provides a recorded history that will influence how you make future decisions. There's a reason that the greatest leaders in history were students of history. They learned from what had happened before. Your history is important. Don't let it be forgotten.
Writing reminds you of your dreams and keeps you moving toward them. It is a means of keeping track of your purpose and the goals that will lead you to achieve them. Reviewing what you have written is a perfect way to see your progress and to show when you have been distracted and may need to give all your attention again to your writing.
Writing a little every day could provide the material that someday becomes a published book. When I wrote about my four-year-old granddaughter who had lost in the mountains, I never dreamed it would be in a book.
32. What did the author want to show by giving the example in Paragraph 2?
A. We shouldn't be lazy with words.
B. A deadline encourages us to work hard.
C. Writing helps us better express ourselves.
D. There're good ways to improve our writing skills,
33. According to Paragraph 3, what does writing help us do?
A. Improve our memory quickly. B. Think of our past experiences.
C. Successfully achieve our dreams. D. Explore happy moments in others' lives.
34. What does Paragraph 5 mainly tell about writing?
A. It can be encouraging. B. It can be distracting.
C. It can be disappointing. D. It can be interesting.
35. What is the purpose of the author in writing the passage?
A. To tell how to publish books one day.
B. To explain why the author loves writing.
C. To tell how to improve our writing skills.
D. To encourage us to write about our lives every day.

The U.S. government's top education official wants schools to do a better job teaching students whose first language is not English. 36 That is because one in every 10 U. S. students from Kindergarten to 12th grade are English learners. Most English learners come from a country where they speak another language, or have parents from a non-English-speaking country.
37 That's what the U. S. Education Secretary John King said. He noted Spanish-speaking students are graduating from high school and attending college at higher rates than ever before. "But in too many places across the country, English learners get less access to good teachers, less access to good coursework, and less access to what they need to get success," King said.
Two recent studies found English learners do better if they attend classes that use both English and the students' native language. Kelly Gonez is a policy adviser at the Department of Education. She said such programs are still not offered by most schools teaching English learners. 38 Gonez said some school districts are hiring teachers from Spain and China. They are trying to make up for a lack of teachers in the United States who can offer teaching in two languages. 39 In New York City, for example, the city's Department of Education says its students speak a total of 180 different languages. About sixty percent are Spanish speakers, and another 14 percent are Chinese speakers.
40 But she said schools can get textbooks in many more languages than just Spanish and Chinese.
A. It is very important.
B. Many languages are spoken in the U.S.
C. There has been some progress in recent years.
D. Spanish-speaking students are good at studying.
E. But such programs are not always easy to set up.
F. Gonez said that it may be hard to find such teachers.
G. One problem is finding enough teachers who can do that.

How are you getting on? I’m writing to share with you that I spent a two-day holiday in Nanning with my family, which was full of surprises.
On the first day, we visited Qingxiu Mountain, where we spent hours wandering around the beautiful gardens of the park. The air was so fresh and the variety of flowers was amazing. It was a great place to relax, exercise and be at peace with nature. In the evening, we went to Zhongshan Snack Street, a must-visit attraction for food lovers. The street was lined with stands selling all types of food from BBQ to seafood and bugs. We had a great time there. The second day, we visited Guangxi Museum of Nationalities. The exhibits there ranged from bronze drums to clothing, jewelry, weapons and a lot more. We learned much about Zhuang Cultures.
All in all, the trip was fun and even educational. We all enjoyed it. Best wishes!

M: Look! Did it rain last night?
W: No. Dad just watered the garden. The starry sky last night was very beautiful, so I didn't go to bed until midnight.
M: I hope it'll rain today.
Text 4
W: Are there 15 boys in Tom's class?
M: No. There are 16 boys in his class.
W: And how many girls?
M: There were 18, but one went to another school last month.
Text 5
M: What did you do in Beijing?
W: Well, we walked a lot, visited several places of interest and enjoyed some local food.
M: Did you have a good time?
W: Oh, yes. I look forward to such a trip again.
Text 6
W: Mike, do you like reading newspapers?
M: I hardly read newspapers now. But I like reading news on the Internet.
W: Do you read books?
M: Yes. But I read very slowly. It usually takes me a month to finish reading a book. What about you?
W: I usually read magazines.
M: What kind of magazine do you usually read?
W: Those about movie stars and singers.
Text 7
W: Henry, are you going to the library?
M: No. I went to the library and worked on my school paper this morning. Now I'm going to the coffee house.
W: Are you meeting anyone there?
M: Yes. My sister will come to visit me today. I want to buy her a cup of coffee.
W: I didn't know you have a sister. Is she younger or older than you?
M: She's two years older than me. She's attending a college in New York.
W: It must be great to have an elder sister.
M: Surely it is. Do you have any brothers or sisters?
W: No.
M: You must have felt very lonely as you were growing up.
Text 8
M: So, Jenny, do you have any plans for tomorrow?
W: Uh, I' m very busy. Why do you ask?
M: Oh, I was thinking if you'd like to get together with me and do something like going for a walk in the park.
W: A walk in the park? I just did that with a friend yesterday and it wasn't a pleasant experience.
M: Why?
W: While we were walking, it suddenly became windy. And before we realized it, it had already begun to rain. Both of us got wet.
M: We can go to see a movie, if you like.
W: Sorry, but I really can't make it. I have to help clean the garden in the morning and in the afternoon I must do my homework.
M: What about tomorrow night?
W: I'll go to a party. It's my friend Lily's birthday tomorrow. I've told her I’ll go there.
M: You're always so busy on Saturdays. I guess I’ll just stay at home and do some reading myself tomorrow.
W: Sorry, Mike. I guess we can go out next week. I'll try my best to make some time for it.
M: Great.
Text 9
W: Mark, I saw you at the supermarket yesterday. But you didn't seem to buy anything there. Were you waiting for anyone there?
M: No. I was working. I work there from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm every day.
W: It must be tiring. I mean you have to study and work at the same time.
M: Yes. But I have no choice. My father is the only breadwinner of my family. I must make money myself.
W: Do you like working there?
M: Not so much. It's kind of boring. But the pay isn't that bad. I can get 20 dollars an hour.
W: Why not find a teaching job? It can be more fun.
M: I once had a teaching job. But I found I wasn't good at teaching young children. Young children like shouting and crying, I really can't stand it. To be honest, I'm not very good at dealing with people.
W: You just need to spend more time with others. The more time you spend with others, the better you'll become at dealing with others.
M: I guess you're right. I'll try to spend more time with others.
Text 10
W: Good afternoon, my dear classmates. Today my topic is "My Close Friends".
As is known to all, it's very important to have friends. I'm lucky enough to have some very close friends. One of them is Alice. We became friends because her family lives just next door to mine. We started playing together when we were just around one year old. We've always been there for each other. Anna is another close friend of mine. We first met when I was in the third grade in primary school. She was very shy and never talked to anyone when she first came to my class. She was sitting next to me. As time went by, we became friends. She changed a lot in the following years. Now she is no longer a shy girl. Instead, she has become easy-going and friendly. We often laugh aloud together. My friend Lisa and I met at the school music club. We became friends because we both love music so much. I'm glad that I have so many good friends in my life.
That's all. Thank you.
