Eve was waiting in the corridor (走廊) outside her class. She was feeling sick. She had two exams that day and physics was first. She really hated physics. It was her worst subject. Lisa looked back at her, and then looked away quickly. Eve thought she looked guilty (內(nèi)疚的). She didn’t have a problem with physics. She didn’t have a problem with anything… Miss Perfect!
“Hi, Eve! So what’s wrong with you and Lisa?” asked Tina,
“I thought you were friends.”
“Yes, so did I,” said Eve.
“But she hasn’t spoken to me for two weeks now. She promised to help me review for the physics exam too, but then she’s ignored (不理會) all my calls and texts.”
While in the exam, Eve found Lisa was holding her phone on her knee under the table and reading from it. Eve couldn’t believe it! Is that how Lisa always got such good grades? She thought about telling the teacher, but she hesitated (猶豫). The next exam was history. That was Eve’s favorite subject but she couldn’t concentrate (全神貫注). She didn’t know what to do about Lisa. Just then, Mr. Reed, their teacher, walked past. “Mr. Reed…”
Lisa was called to the teachers’ office and there waited Mr. Reed….
The history test was over. Eve was walking towards the school gate when she heard footsteps behind her. It was Lisa. Eve could see that she had been crying. “Listen,” said Lisa. “I’m really sorry I haven’t answered your calls, but my dad had a heart attack two weeks ago and he’s in hospital. He had a big heart operation today and I was very worried about him. So I was reading texts from my mum, but Mr. Reed caught me. He thought I was cheating. He believes me now, but I have to take the exam again. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you what was happening. Will you forgive me?”

At your next meeting, wait for a pause (停頓) in conversation and try to measure how long it lasts.
Among English speakers, it is probable that it will be a second or two at most. But while this pattern may be universal, our understanding of silence differs greatly across cultures.
What one culture considers a confusing or embarrassing pause may be seen by others as a valuable moment of thought and respect for what the last speaker has said. Research in Dutch (荷蘭語) and also in English found that when a silence in conversation lasts four seconds, people start to feel uneasy. However, another study of business meetings found that Japanese people are happy with silences of 8.2 seconds — nearly twice as long as in Americans’ meetings.
In Japan, it is recognized that the best communication is when you don’t speak at all. It’s already a failure to understand each other by speaking because you’re repairing that failure by using words.
In the US, it may originate (源于) from the history of colonial (殖民地的) America as a crossroads of many different races (種族). When you have difference, it’s hard to reach common understanding unless you talk and there’s understandably a kind of anxiety unless people use words to establish (建立) a common life. This applies also to some extent to London.
However, when there’s more homogeneity, perhaps it’s easier for some kinds of silence to appear. For example, among your closest friends and family it’s easier to sit in silence than with people you’re less well known.
28. Which of the following people might have the longest silence in conversation?
A. The Dutch B. The American
C. The English D. The Japanese
29. What might the Japanese agree with in a conversation?
A. Speaking more gives the upper hand.
B. Speak out what you have in your mind.
C. Great minds think alike without words.
D. The shorter talking silence, the better.
30. What can we learn from the text?
A. A four second silence in conversation is universal.
B. It’s hard for American to reach a common agreement.
C. English speakers are more talkative than Japanese speakers.
D. The closer we and our family are, the easier the silence appears.
31. What does the underlined word “homogeneity” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Similarity B. Difference
C. Disagreement D. Misunderstanding
D
My school appeared on the news last week because we had made an important change in our local area. Our class had planted a large garden where was once only a vacant lot(空地). It was a lot of work but it was all worth (值得)it. I got blisters(水泡) from digging, and we all got insect bites, too.
I learned a lot about gardening and cooperation(合作), and then I learned about the media. Our teacher telephoned the TV station and informed them of what we had accomplished. She spoke with the producer. The producer checked with the directors, but they said there were plenty of stories similar to ours. They wanted to know what was special about our particular garden, since many schools plant them.
The teacher explained that, after going on the Internet to learn about the prairie(大草原), we had made a prairie garden. We had gone to a prairie and gotten seeds from the plants, and then we planted them. We did not water the garden, but we did weed(除草) it. We decided to let nature water it with rain, since that was how prairies grew in the past. We sent a picture of the garden to the news station. In the picture, the grass was so high that it stood taller than the fourth grade students.
As a result, the producer sent a reporter to our school. He interviewed the headmaster and asked him many questions about the garden. After that, they interviewed us, and we explained to them what we had learned through this project.
That night, we watched the news, and there we were. The news reporter told our story. It was only two minutes long, but it was us. We were famous. All that work, all those blisters, it was worth it. We knew that when we saw the garden every day, but now we knew that the whole city thought so, too.
32. What seemed to be the TV directors’ first reaction to the garden?
A. They were excited. B. They were surprised.
C. They were worried. D. They were uninterested.
33. What is special about the garden?
A. Weeds were allowed to spread naturally.
B. The grass grew faster than common grass.
C. The seeds came from the plants of a prairie.
D. Underground water was used for the plants.
34. What does the underlined word “that” refer to in the last paragraph?
A. We got blisters on our hands. B. Our hard work was worthwhile.
C. The garden would be famous. D. The project would be finished.
35. How did the author feel about the project?
A. Annoyed. B. Curious. C. Proud. D. Regretful.
