Several years ago, a television reporter was talking to three of the most important people in America. One was a very rich banker, another owned one of the largest companies in the world and the third owned many buildings in the centre of New York. The reporter was talking to them about being important.
“How do we know if someone is really important?” The reporter asked the banker.
The banker thought for a few moments and then said, “I think anybody who is invited to the White House to meet the President of the United States is really important.”
The reporter then turned to the owner of the very large company. “Do you agree with that?” She asked.
The man shook his head, “No. I think the President invites a lot of people to the White House. You’d only be important if while you were visiting the President, there was a telephone call from the President of another country, and the President of the US said he was too busy to answer it.”
The reporter then turned to the third man, “Do you think so?”
“No, I don’t,” he said. “I don’t think that makes the visitor important. That makes the President important.
“Then what would make the visitor important?” The reporter and the other two men asked.
“Oh, I think if the visitor to the White House was talking to the President and the phone rang, and the President picked up the receiver, listened and then said, ‘It is for you.’”

No doubt there are ups and downs in life. Whatever the situation is, you shouldn’t lose your joy of life. Life is for a limited period only and no one knows how long he/she will live, so why do you waste your precious time in worrying about the things that are beyond your control? Be happy, and enjoy your life unconditionally (無(wú)條件地).
You enjoy good days but you also need to learn how to enjoy bad days, even enjoy your pain. In 2016 when I was in Geneva, Switzerland, I suffered a sudden heart attack. My colleagues called an ambulance and I was taken to hospital with much pain in my chest. Before reaching hospital, I was totally exhausted with pain and was going to lose control of my emotions. Then the doctor in the ambulance said, “Don’t worry; you are in safe hands.” His words took away all my pain because I started realizing that it was no time to worry about pain and it’s time to be happy that my life was safe. At that time, I learnt an important lesson that in pain there is a hidden joy and whoever sees the bright side can enjoy pain. My pain turned into a joy which greatly helped me recover more quickly than expected.
You not only enjoy success but you also need to learn to enjoy failure. Failure provides you with an opportunity to benefit from so many choices you’ve made. Celebrating failure will raise your morale and make you more powerful and determined to achieve success. We all make mistakes in life but only the courageous people not only laugh at their own mistakes but also let other people laugh at them and then they reach success without any spiritual burden (負(fù)擔(dān)). A person who learns from mistakes and knows how to turn the bad situation into his/her favor is the most intelligent person and really enjoys his/her life.
24. What does the author mainly tell us in the first paragraph?
A. Life is full of ups and downs. B. People’s lives only last a limited period.
C. We should enjoy our life unconditionally. D. Bad situations can be changed into good ones.
25. Why did the author still feel happy when experiencing much pain?
A. His colleagues were always with him. B. He could be looked after by his parents.
C. He planned to enjoy the last days in life. D. His doctor made him realize the value of being alive.
26. The underlined word “morale” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to “________”.
A. talent B. confidence C. pleasure D. inspiration
27. The author thinks that the wisest person________.
A. never laughs at others B. has strong determination
C. is ready to do others a favor D. is good at learning from mistakes

Several years ago climate change was a controversial subject with many people insisting it didn't exist.Today, few people doubt that the climate is changing in uncomfortable and dangerous ways.
For me,living on an island off the west coast of Canada, climate change didn't directly affect me.That changed this summer. There are always a few wildfires in the forests of Canada in summer but this year has been exceptionally bad as we've had,for practical purposes,no rain at all. Then the fires started and many families have lost their homes to the flames. In early August we woke up one day to a heavy smoke from the mainland. It was dark for several days.By September, again the sun has been blocked by smoke, this time from Washington and Oregon in the United States. The smoke has covered us for about a week.
In the more than twenty years we've never before had this happen. Now we've been blanketed by smoke twice in one summer. The change in our climate is clear and it doesn't bode(預(yù)兆)well.Already our seaside town is putting regulations in place and making plans to deal with a rise in sea level. However,if the sea level comes up more than a few meters we could have big problems.
I don't pretend to understand all the causes of climate change or the best ways of fixing it
if,indeed,it can be fixed. It is,however, becoming increasingly noticeable.Last night we were supposed to be able to see the Northern Lights but the smoke prevented that. But there's some good news.I have just noticed that for the first time in months it is raining.
28.When did the author begin to be affected by climate change?
A.After the smoky days. B.In August this summer.
C.On arriving at the island. D.When the first fire broke out.
29.What did the seaside town do with climate change?
A.It found the causes. B.It solved the problems.
C.It made a prediction. D.It took some measures.
30.What's the good news the author mentioned in the last paragraph?
A.The coming of the rain. B.Seeing the Northern Lights.
C.The best way to fix the weather. D.The appearance of heavy smoke.
31.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Causes of Climate Change B.Climate Change Hits Home
C.Global Warming Is Less Serious D.Ways to Deal with the Rising Sea Level
D
Regarded as one of the English language’s most gifted poets, John Keats wrote poetry that concentrated on imagery, human nature, and philosophy(哲學(xué)). Although Keats didn’t receive much formal literary education, his own studies and passion brought him much success. Additionally, his own life situation influenced his poetry greatly.
Growing up as a young boy in London in a lower middle-class family, the young John didn’t attend a private school, but went to a public one. His teachers and his family’s friends regarded him as an optimistic boy who favored playing and fighting much more than minding his studies. After his father’s death in the early 1800s, followed by his mother’s passing due to tuberculosis(肺結(jié)核), he began viewing life differently. He wanted to escape the world and did so by reading anything he could get his hands on.
At around the age of 16, the teenage John Keats began studying under a surgeon so that he too might become a doctor. However, his literary appetite had taken too much of his fancy, especially with his addiction to the poetry of Ehmund Spenser. He was able to have his first full poem published in the Examiner in 1816, entitled O Solitude! If I Must With Thee Dwell. Within two months in 1817, Keats had written an entire volume of poetry, but was sharply criticized(批評(píng)) by a magazine. However, the negative response didn’t stop his love of rhythm(韻律).
John Keats’ next work was Endymion, which was published in May 1818. The story involves a shepherd who falls in love with the moon goddess and leads him on an adventure of one boy’s hope to overcome the limitations of being human. Following Endymion, however, he tried something more narrative-based(敘事體的) and wrote Isabella. During this time, John Keats began seeing his limitations in poetry due to his own limit in life experiences. He would have to have the “knowledge” associated with his poems. His next work was Hyperion that would attempt to combine all that he learned. However, a bout(發(fā)作) with tuberculosis while visiting Italy would keep him from his work and eventually take his life in 1821.
32. John Keats’ attitude towards life changed because of .
A. his early education from school B. the deaths of his parents
C. Edmund Spenser’s poetry D. the criticism of a magazine
33. What is the common thing between John Keats and his mother?
A. They read many books. B. They had a bad childhood.
C. They died of the same disease. D. They showed strong interest in poetry.
34. While trying to achieve his dream of becoming a poet first, John Keats was .
A determined B. experienced C. knowledgeable D. impatient
35. What do we know from the passage?
A. Keats received little education at school. B. Endymion was about a real love story.
C. In 1816 Keats spent two months writing a poem. D. Keats once had a chance of becoming a doctor.

Dear Jack,
How is everything going ? Knowing you are going to visit China in your summer holiday to experience Chinese culture and life, I am glad to welcome you and reply to what you ask for.
To make your trip more unforgettable, I’ll make some recommendations.First of all, Beijing, the capital city of China, is the place where you can fully experience Chinese culture. Besides, if time permits, you had better experience Beijing Opera in Beijing Grand Theatre in person. Meanwhile, some Chinese food such as Beijing Roast Duck, the Hot Pot, can’t be missed because it is quite different from that in your country.
I believe you will have a wonderful trip during your stay in China. Looking forward to your early coming.
Yours
Li Hua
