We first met Tm and Gee in the early days f ur marriage, smene had been returning ur

gt hme frm wrk that day, a typed letter had replaced the gift. The letter was frm Tm and
explained hw he had cme t walk the neighbrhd n garbage day, returning cans fr peple he
barely knew. Back where he'd been fighting a war, his yung wife, Gee, had fund herself living
alne. Neighbrs had taken the time t handle her garbage cans s she didn't have t, and he never
frgt. Nw he paid it frward by ding the same fr all f us. Unfrtunately a few years after
we'd mved in, Tm died.
These days, we're piling up bxes f ur wn. We're planning a mve. The huse that seemed
s huge six years ag is filled t capacity with furniture and bks and tys and, f curse, peple,
We knw it's time t g, and yet we can't seem t stick the Fr Sale sign up n the grassland.
Gaining a third bedrm and maybe an ffice smetimes seems like a lusy trade fr all we stand
t lse.
It's nt just Gee and Tm. It’s the man wh lets ur kids pick peaches f the tree in his frnt
yard. It's the ladies wh call Jim when their pl filter breaks and leave verflwing baskets fr
ur kids n Easter. It's the fficer wh smiles and waves and makes me feel a little safer when Jim
is away. It is they wh teach us what it means t be a neighbr.

Schls are under cnstant pressure t make budget cuts, and music prgrams are ften first
n the chpping blck. Hwever, a recent study frm the University f British Clumbia in
Canada has shwn that students wh tk music lessns in high schl perfrmed better in
subjects such as English, science, and math.
The researchers cllected data frm ver 100,000 students at public high schls acrss the
prvince f British Clumbia. Sme f them tk music lessns during high schl while thers
never attended them. Checking the test scres f students wh tk music classes with thse f
their peers, the study fund that the musicians gt higher grades in a range f different schl
subjects.
Research like this has been dne befre, but as fr the number f respndents, this study is
much larger, and it tk int accunt ther factrs that may have affected the results. Fr example,
perhaps students wh tk music classes were encuraged t d s because they already had gd
grades. This UBC study rules ut a number f ther factrs that culd explain why music students
perfrmed better academically, and the researchers still find a clear effect f music lessns n
academic perfrmance.
Nt nly did music students perfrm better than nn-musicians, but students wh played an
instrument did even better than thse wh sang. “Learning t play a musical instrument and
playing in an ensemble(樂團(tuán)) is very rewarding,” says Martin Guhn, ne f the researchers, “A
student can learn t read music ntes, achieve eye-hand-mind crdinatin, develp keen listening
skills and establish interpersnal relatinships.”
What this study desn't tell us, thugh, is why music makes these students perfrm better
academically, but the research paper mentins a few pssible explanatins. Music practice is
linked with neurlgical(神經(jīng)系統(tǒng)的) changes that imprves certain brain functins, affecting
memry and planning skills. Besides, there is a pssible mtivatinal factr. Students wh take
music lessns see a tangible result frm practice—they get better—and they might apply that t
their ther wrk. And the nn-cmpetitive team aspect f making music tgether culd strengthen
students' scial develpment, which wuld als help them in ther areas.
28. Hw did the researchers find the result f the research?
A.By cnducting tests.B.By analyzing causes.
C.By making cmparisns.D.By building mdels.
29. Hw is the recent study different frm previus nes?
A.It cvered mre schl subjects.
B.It allwed fr students wh sang.
C.It was carried ut natinwide.
D.It prduced a mre cnvincing result.
30. Why did the authr mentin Martin Guhn's wrds in Paragraph 4?
A.T speak highly f music students.
B.T explain why music helps students perfrm better.
C.T present the benefits f playing instruments.
D.T encurage students t jin an ensemble.
31. What can be inferred frm the last paragraph?
A.Music practice can make an verall imprvement in students’ brain.
B.Prgress made in music may mtivate students t wrk harder in math.
C.Singing can’t make any difference in imprving students’ memry.
D.Playing in an rchestra culd make students less cmpetitive in ther fields.

Recently, Ggle annunced that its vice-activated prgram, Ggle Assistant, will be
ffering a new feature called "Tell Me Smething Gd". Users can nw give that cmmand and
receive an earful f psitive news stries. What's mre, The New Yrk Times has a page nline

Karen McIntyre f Virginia Cmmnwealth University explains, these are all parts f a news
mvement called cnstructive jurnalism.
Cnstructive jurnalism is different frm "feel-gd news", like a fireman rescuing a cat.
Instead, cnstructive jurnalism ffers a mre cmplete but appealing versin f the news, says
McIntyre. In her pinin, besides fcusing n slutins, cnstructive jurnalism includes reprting
n the histrical and scial setting f specific news incidents, using reliable data t lk at
lnger-term trends, and aviding interview techniques that create drama withut increasing
understanding.
Hwever, newspapers thrive n eyes n the page, and editrs may be less interested in
cnstructive jurnalism if they aren't cnvinced that it'll attract their readers. While McIntyre
acknwledges thse cncerns, research has shwn the ppsite t be true. Fr example, ne study
fund participants wh read an nline stry that fcused n appraches t pverty spent mre time
n the page than thse reading a similar stry withut fcusing n slutins.
There is much we dn't knw yet abut hw this kind f jurnalism affects behavir. The
research is relatively yung, thugh at least ne f McIntyre's studies shwed an interesting result:
peple wh read inspiring news stries were mre willing afterwards t sign up fr generus
actins related t the stry, such as dnating mney t supprt a cause frm the stry.
Therefre, she argues, there's a hunger fr this type f news.
32. Why are Ggle Assistant and "Fixes" mentined in the first paragraph?
A. T say hw the news mvement wrks.
B. T stress the imprtance f psitive news.
C. T shw what cnstructive jurnalism is.
D. T lead in the tpic f the whle text.
