Low-Cost Gifts for Mother's Day
Gift No. 1
Offer to be your mother's health friend. Promise to be there for any and all doctor's visits whether a disease or a regular medical check-up. Most mothers always say “no need,” another set of eyes and ears is always a good idea at a doctor's visit. The best part? This one is free.
Gift No. 2
Help your mother organize all of her medical records, which include the test results and medical information. Put them all in one place. Be sure to make a list of all of her medicines and what times she takes them. “Having all this information in one place could end up saving your mother's life,” Dr. Marie Savard said.
Gift No. 3
Enough sleep is connected to general health conditions. “Buy your mother cotton sheets and comfortable pillows to encourage better sleep,” Savard said. “We know that good sleep is very important to our health.”
Gift No. 4
Some gift companies such as Presents for Purpose allow you to pay it forward this Mother's Day by picking gifts in which 10 percent of the price you pay goes to a charity (慈善機(jī)構(gòu)). Gift givers can choose from a wide variety of useful but inexpensive things -many of which are “green” - and then choose a meaningful charity from a list. When your mother gets the gift, she will be told that she has helped the chosen charity.
21. What are you advised to do for your mother at doctor's visits?
A. Take notes. B. Be with her. C. Buy medicine. D. Give her gifts.

My Ph.D.(博士學(xué)位) adviser called me into his office, saying I needn’t bring my notebook. After 15 minutes of listing my positive things, he looked me in the eye and said, “You are fired from the lab.”
I had moved to Israel from my native India the year before, excited to experience a new culture and study for a Ph.D. At first things went well in my new lab. Then, 3 months before I was fired, I ran into some problems. I made a few mistakes in the lab that slowed my research, but I wasn't aware that my adviser noticed them, and he never spoke to me about any concerns. I’m still not sure why he fired me, but I guess it was because of those mistakes. He wasn't confident that I could complete my research in time as we’d planned.
The first few days after I was fired were especially difficult. I spent hours staring at my computer screen, unable to get anything done. One day all I could do was sit on a beach, crying. I tried to change his mind with promising results, but he wouldn’t change his decision. I could not tell the news to my family in India, as the fear of disappointing them overwhelmed (壓垮)me. I soon got into a state of sadness and anxiety. Meanwhile, the date for me to leave the country was drawing near, as my visa required me to be registered(注冊) as a student. I was lonely and without hope.
Around that time, I watched Dasvidaniya, a Bollywood movie that’s about a man who has 3 months to live. One line from the movie impressed me: “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade(檸檬水)”. What kind of lemonade could I make out of my present situation? My wish to complete a Ph. D. was never in doubt. Finally, I told myself that one failure was not the end of the world, and that I needed to give it another try. With renewed confidence, I applied for other programs. Within 2 months, I landed an offer from a Ph. D. program in Italy. I gladly accepted it, happy that my goal of completing a Ph. D. was alive once again.
I’m thankful that I didn't give up on my dream and that I found another professor willing to take me on.
24. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?

A. He applied for a new visa.
B. He got addicted to computer games.
C. He tried to change the adviser's mind.

26. What kind of "lemonade” did the author make out of the difficult situation?
A. Persuading the adviser to let him stay.
B. Being responsible for different programs.
C. Getting accepted by another Ph. D. program.
D. Holding the belief to get a doctor's degree.
27. What lesson can we learn from the story?
A. Direction is more important than effort.
B. Turn to movies for comfort when in trouble.
C. A doctor’s degree is important for the future.
D. Difficulties in life can be turned into something positive.

Some students get so nervous before a test. They do poorly even if they know the material. Sian Beilock, a professor at the University of Chicago in Illinois, has studied these highly anxious test-takers. The students start worrying about the results. And when we worry, it actually uses up attention and memory resources(資源).
Professor Beilock and another researcher, Gerardo Ramirez, have developed a possible solution. Just before an exam, highly anxious test-takers spend ten minutes writing about their worries about the test.
The researchers tested the idea on a group of twenty anxious college students. They gave them two short maths tests. After the first one, they asked the students to either sit quietly or write about their feelings about the upcoming second test.
Professor Beilock says those who sat quietly scored(得分) an average of 12% worse on the second test. But the students who had written about their fears improved(提高) their performance by an average of 5%. Next, the researchers used younger students in a biology class. They told them before final exams either to write about their feelings or to think about things unrelated(不相關(guān)的) to the test. Professor Beilock says highly anxious students who did the writing got an average grade of B+, compared to a B-for those who did not.
“What we showed is that for students who are highly test-anxious, and who'd done our writing intervention(干預(yù)), all of a sudden there was no relationship between test anxiety and grades. They were performing just as well as their classmates who don't normally get nervous in these tests.”
But what if students do not have a chance to write about their fears immediately before an exam? Professor Beilock says students can try it themselves at home or in the library and still improve their performance.
28. What do the students start worrying about before an exam?
A. Whether they can pass the exams.
B. What other students do during the test.
C. Whether they have remembered the materials.
D. What kind of problems they will meet on the test paper.
29. What is the solution developed by researchers?
A. Making the students focused on the test.
B. Asking the students to sit quietly before the test.
C. Having the students write about their worries about the test.
D. Asking the students to direct the attention away from the test.
30. According to Professor Beilock, those who thought about things unrelated to the test _________.
A. became less nervous before the test
B. were better at controlling their feelings
C. did worse than those who wrote about their feelings
D. did better than those who wrote about their feelings
31. We can infer from the last paragraph that ____________.
A. writing about our worries before an exam can work a bit
B. we can only write about our worries right before an exam
C. the best place to write about our worries is in the test room
D. it doesn't matter where we write about our worries before an exam
D
A new study in the journal of Tourism Analysis shows frequent travelers are happier with their lives than people who don't travel at all.
Chun-Chu Chen, a professor at Washington State University, conducted a survey to find out why some people travel more frequently than others and whether or not travel and tourism experiences have a lasting effect on happiness and wellness.
Additionally, participants in the survey who reported regularly traveling at least 75 miles away from home also reported being about 7% happier when asked about their overall well-being than those who reported traveling very rarely or not at all. The results of his analysis show people who pay more attention to tourism-related information and frequently discuss their travel plans with friends are more likely to go on regular vacations than those who aren’t constantly thinking about their next trip.
“While things like work, family life and friends play a bigger role in overall reports of well-being, the accumulation (積累) of travel experiences does appear to have a small but noticeable effect on self-reported life satisfaction,” Chen said.
Participants in the study were asked about the importance of travel in their lives, how much time they spent looking into and planning future vacations, and how many trips they went on over a year. They were also asked about their life satisfaction. Out of the 500 participants, half reported going on more than four pleasure trips a year. Only 7% did not take any vacations.
As travel restrictions (限制) due to COVID-19 pandemic begin to relax in the future, the research could have important effects on both tourists and the tourism industry. Based on the results of the study, Chen said travel companies, tourist attractions and even airlines, could launch social media campaigns, such as creating signs about the scientific benefits of vacation, to arouse people’s interest in discussing their opinions about travel.
32. What is the benefit of frequent travelling according to the study?
A. Getting more tourism information. B. Making more friends.
C. Bettering tourism industry. D. Improving one's well-being.
33. What does Paragraph 5 mainly talk about?
A. Why the professor carried out the study.
B. How the participants felt about the survey.
C. What the participants were interviewed about.
D. What the participants planned to do in the future.
34. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Tourism industry should improve their service.
B. The results of the study will benefit tourism industry.
C. COVID-19 pandemic will be more serious in the future.
D. People will live a happier life after COVID-19 pandemic.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Travel more and be happier B. Make good use of travelling
C. Prepare for the tourism development D. Make travel plans with friends

第二節(jié) 書面表達(dá)(滿分25分)
閱讀下面短文,根據(jù)所給情節(jié)進(jìn)行續(xù)寫,使之構(gòu)成一個(gè)完整的故事,
Once, when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus(馬戲團(tuán)). Finally, there was only one family between us and the ticket counter.
This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of 12. You could tell they didn’t have a lot of money. Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children were well-behaved, all of them standing in line, two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly jabbering about the clowns, elephants, and other acts they would see that night.
One could sense they had never been to the circus before. It promised to be a highlight of their
young lives. The father and mother were at the head of the pack, standing proud as could be. The mother was holding her husband’s hand, looking up at him as if to say, "You’re my knight(騎士) in shining armor(盔甲).” He was smiling, looking back at her as if to reply, “You got that right.”
The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded. “Please let me buy eight children’s tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus.” The ticket lady quoted the price. The man’s wife let go of his hand, her head dropped, and his lip began to shake. The father leaned a little closer and asked, “How much did you say?” The ticket lady again quoted the price. The man didn’t have enough money.
How was he supposed to turn and tell his eight children that he didn’t have enough money to take them to the circus? Actually we were not wealthy in any sense. So I understand how the kids would feel. I feel sorry for them.
注意:
1. 所續(xù)寫的短文詞數(shù)應(yīng)為80詞左右;
2. 段落開頭句已經(jīng)為你寫好,不計(jì)入總詞數(shù)。

Dear David,
I’m sorry to hear that you have trouble learning Chinese. And I’m writing to offer you some advice.
Below are my suggestions for you. First of all, I advise that you should take a Chinese course, which is of great help to improve your Chinese ability. What’s more, it is a good idea for you to watch TV and read books in Chinese whenever possible. Besides, why not learn some Chinese songs? Last but not least, make more Chinese friends, and you will have more chances to practice your oral Chinese.
I hope that my advice is of great help to you. Looking forward to your reply.
Yours, Li Hua

Seeing what was going on, my dad put his hand in his pocket, pulled out a $20 bill and dropped it on the ground. Then he picked it up, tapping the man on the shoulder, “Excuse me, sir, this fell out of your pocket.” The man turned around and saw the money. Knowing what was going on, he looked straight into my dad’s eyes, took my dad’s hand and squeezed tightly. With his lip shaking and a tear running down his cheek, he replied, “Thank you, thank you, sir. This really means a lot to me and my family.” At the same time, his children bowed to us with eyes shining with delight and gratitude. Giving a helping hand to the one in need was really great, which had a profound effect on my life forever.

M: No. ?Now I often read news on some famous news sites. It’s more convenient.
W: Is there any impressive news today?
M: Yes. The news about a vending machine that bakes a pizza in three minutes.
W: ?Baking a pizza in three minutes? That’s really unbelievable. So is it in the US?
M: No. It’s in Rome. The machine is called “Mr. Go Pizza”. It offers four different kinds of pizzas which cost between$5 and$7. There’s a small glass window that allows customers to watch as their pizza bakes.
W: So what about the pizza? Does it taste good?
M: Some people called the pizza “terrible”; others were kinder. They said the pizza is OK, but they also said it’s not pizza.
W: Well, Italy is well-known for its pizzas. There are so many restaurants that sell pizzas. ?I don’t think such a machine will be successful there.
M: ?I doubt it, too. But the machine has an advantage.
W: What is it?
M: It offers 24-hour service. It is very useful if you’re hungry late at night.
