“Even if I disagree with a person on absolutely everything under the sun, I always want to say, That’s still OK. Burnout just means the state of being extremely tired or ill, either physically or mentally, because you have worked too hard. The effects of academic burnout can be life-changing. In a culture and environment that encourages us to “reach our fullest potential” and “always try our hardest”, burnout is almost inevitable. Watching myself or others get burned out is like watching a car crash in slow motion. You know it’s going to happen, but you don’t know how—or if—you can stop it.
The premise of academic burnout is simple—you’ve studied or worked so hard that your brain decides to give up. At that point, it is not just begging you to take a break—it is forcing you to. There is no clear-cut way to avoid it. To say “don’t work as hard” or “take breaks” is overly simplistic. It quite often produces the opposite to the intended effect and the person in question often ends up working even harder to prove them wrong.
Academic burnout often goes hand-in-hand with perfectionism and people’s attempts to stop the person from working are merely seen as a challenge to work harder. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to avoid burnout—and perhaps that’s what makes it such a complicated issue. What works for one person is not guaranteed to work for another.
Listening to generic, overused advice feels like listening to the same song over and over—there comes a point when you stop hearing it. From being so (unfortunately) experienced with burnout—I have acquired some strategies over the years. I hope I never have to deal with academic, or any other type of burnout, again.
8. Why is burnout almost unavoidable?
A. Because everyone longs for the greatest success.
B. Because everyone can reach their goal.
C. Because we know nothing about burnout at all.
D. Because we refuse to work as hard as we can.
9. What does the word “premise” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Purpose. B. Assumption.
C. Solution. D. Function.
10. What can stop academic burnout?
A. Trying to prove others wrong. B. Being perfect to everything.
C. Just stopping working hard. D. Being advised to take breaks.
11. What does the writer think of a solution to burnout?
A. It is good to listen to others’ good advice.
B. It is useful following others’ approaches.
C. It is easy for the author to stop any burnout.
D. It’s hard to find a working-for-all solution.
【答案】8. A9. B10. C11. D

An Irish designer is growing unique mushroom hives (蜂箱) in order to protect her island’s local black bees. For years, Ireland imported a large group of bees from places with tropical climates and warmer weather. Bees find it challenging to survive in Irish climate but other generic factors like loss of habitat and increase in the usage of pesticides have also led to a decline in the bee population. Further, the imported new species mated (交配) with local bees to produce their young that stormed the hives of the black bees and still could not get adjusted to the weather.
Econooc is a type of hive designed by Niamh Damery, an Irish designer, to save Ireland’s native black bees. This hive is among the world’s finest 20 and has been considered for the James Dyson Design Award for Sustainability. The designer not only aims to protect the bees but also intends to have people participate in its conservation.
The mushroom hives are cultivated from mycelium pores (由菌絲孔培育而成) with by-products like straw or wood shavings used as substrate (底座). Mycelium, situated underground, provides support to the fruiting body. These mushrooms are coming out as a probable design tool. GNN reported that mushrooms could be used to build things like canoes, bricks, and coffins. To create the beehive, mycelium and the substrate concoction (混合物) is stuffed into a mold (模具) in the shape of the actual hive. It is then heated in the oven to secure the shape.
Econooc copies a hive and is placed in the hollow of a local tree. This is the natural habitat of the black Irish bees, where they build their shelter, store food and protect their young ones. Recycled plastic is used to make a landing pad so that owners can watch the activities of the bees. The hive is secured on the tree with the help of old car seatbelts to fasten it. Every aspect of the project is based on sustainability.
12. What does the author think of the years’ introduction of the new species of bee?
A. Increasing the bee population. B. Making things even worse.
C. Improving the local black bees. D. Reproducing a better species.
13. What is special about the new hive?
A. Its production way. B. Its shape.
C. Its materials. D. Its functions.
14. How does the project strike you most?
A. Environmentally friendly. B. Extremely economical.
C. Absolutely creative. D. Comparatively efficient.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. A New Species of Bee Fails to Save Irish Bees
B. A Bee Hive Recognized for Its Sustainability
C. Mushrooms Make Good Materials for Beehives
D. Homegrown Mushrooms Give Life to Ireland’s Bees
【答案】12. B13. C14. A15. D

故填will be made。

故填the。

Half a year before graduation from college, my son began to seek a job. Due to the financial crisis, fewer companies would like to employ new staff, which worried me and his mother a lot although we knew our son was good enough. My son targeted a company that intended to hire only one person while there were more than twenty people filing their resumes (簡(jiǎn)歷).
After the interview, there would only be three who could enter the final round, which would later decide one person to be employed. Everything seemed to go quite smoothly and my son passed the first round and entered the final round in a week. We were all happy about that.
On the day of the final interview, my son and other two candidates arrived at the interview place on time, waiting for the test. Unexpectedly, the interview was unbelievably brief and simple. The interviewer only asked a few questions and said to them, “All of you are very super. Please go home and wait for our message. We will tell you the result in three days. Good luck to all of you!” On the morning of the third day, my son received a text from the company shortly after breakfast that he was not employed. We all felt very disappointed.
In nightfall that day, my son suddenly told me excitedly on the phone in a loud voice, “Dad, I have been employed!” Greatly surprised, I could not wait to ask him, “What’s the whole matter?” My son told me that he received another text saying that he was employed. Actually the first text sent to my son was also part of the test in the interview. Three men received the same text this morning and only my son’s reply was “Thank you” while the others said “Goodbye”.

Saying “thank you” shows respect for others’ work and shows your generosity. Therefore, while under the same condition, you will get the upper hand in terms of opportunities compared with others! Good manners lie inside your heart, which will help you unexpectedly.
Actually we are faced with tests every day. One minute we come across an old lady who needs a helping hand and the next our boss ask for our opinion about our colleague. It is the instinct we are born with and the education we’ve received that help us pass these tests. What if my son didn’t say “thank you”? Definitely, he would miss the chance to work with many excellent people and he would not learn from this company which I’m sure will develop into an outstanding one!
