Last July, my 12-year-old car died on California’s Santa Freeway. It was an hour before sunset, and I was 25 miles from home. I couldn’t reach anyone to pick me up, so I decided to take a bus. Not knowing the routes, I thought I’d just go east. A bus stopped. I got on and asked the driver how far she was going. “Ten more miles,” she said. There was another bus I could take from there. This clearly was going to be a long night. I got off at the end of the route and she told me which bus to look for. After waiting 30 minutes, I began to think about a very expensive taxi ride home. Then a bus came up. There was no lighted number above its windshield (擋風(fēng)玻璃). It was out of service, but the door opened. It was the same driver. “I just can’t leave you here,” she said. “This isn’t the nicest place. I will take you home.” “You will drive me home on the bus?” I asked in surprise. “No, I will take you in my car,” she said. “It is a long way.” “Come on,” she said. “I have nothing else to
do.” She began telling me a story as we drove from the station in the car. A few days earlier, her brother had run out of gas. A kind man picked him up, took him to a service station and then back to his car. “I’m passing the kindness along,” she said. When I offered her money as a thank-you, she refused. “Just do something nice for somebody in need. Pass it along,” she said.

It is true that people with better education are usually able to get better paying jobs. In other words, they have more chances to choose a good job while people with little or no education don’t. It seems that the purpose of education is to make people get jobs. But this isn’t accepted by all people. Some people may think that a person should spend the best years of his life getting education only for a way of living. This was probably one of the earliest reasons of education. In fact, if education is just a way of making a living, people don't need to spend so much time in school. People can get education for a living in a short time. Subjects like history and geography need not be taught to everyone. Even language and math need not be taught in detail ( 詳 細(xì) 地 ), either.
It is clear that education is much more than teaching a man to get a way of living. Education is well-rounded and it is mainly for improving a man. It is not only to teach him to speak, read and write, but also to develop his creative thinking and other abilities. After that, it is to make him a wise man and thankfully enjoy the achievements of human. Education is to make a man lead a better life. Educated people are expected to be able to listen to good music, read good books, watch plays and most of all take an interest in the world. I would agree that making a good living is an important reason for education, but certainly not the main reason.

Next time you’re in a public place, take a look around you. And count how many people are using their phones. I can tell you now that it is about over half, whether you’re on a bus, in a shop or on the street.
I’m not saying that I am not an example of this , but it always surprises me how people can spend so much time on their phones without talking to others. Has it gone too far?
Recently, my smart phone broke and needed repairing for a week. I had to use a really old and basic phone just to keep me in touch with my family and friends. All I could do on this phone was to send text messages, make calls and play one game. And I loved it. I loved being free from the Internet and I really didn’t mind not having updates ( 數(shù) 據(jù) )about what my friends were doing. It allowed me to spend more time enjoying my time in London and watching the people around me and really see what was going on.
However, I knew that as soon as I got my smart phone back I would be one of those people once again. Perhaps I should just go back to using the basic phone and forget I never got my smart phone back.
