After spending the weekend away with my adult son, I was so impressed by his generous heart that I sent him this letter.
Dear son,
I want to thank you for teaching me a very valuable lesson in life by the great example you set. When we were eating at that cafe in Bondi and a person who had ordered his hamburger didn’t have enough money to pay for it. Without any hesitation, you went over and put the extra $2 into his hand.
When we were leaving, you also threw a five-cent coin onto the road and said something like, “Some kids will really enjoy finding it.”
Last week, a young man ahead of me in the line at a petrol (汽油) station didn’t have enough money to pay for his petrol. I asked the money collector, “How much short is he?” She told me he had meant to put $15 petrol in his car but he had been looking at the wrong gauge (計(jì)量表) and had put in 15 litres (升) which came to just over $20. This is an easy mistake as both gauges run fast.
Something made me think of you and what you did that night at the cafe in Bondi. I handed the young man $6. He was so surprised and said, “But why would you do this for me?” I just smiled as I thought of you.
Thank you, son. It’s better to give than to receive. Now when I see a five-cent coin on the ground and want to pick it up, I think of you and leave it there just in case some kids will get excited to find it.
Love always,
Mum

If you are a hiker or a nature lover, you’ll enjoy reading A Walk in the Woods.
It’s a true story, written as a comedy. The author is Bill Bryson. Bryson returned to the US after 20 years in Britain and decided to get familiar with his native country by walking the Appalachian Trail(阿巴拉契亞山道).
The trail, about 3,500 kilometers long, is popular with thousands of hikers. It goes from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Mountain Katahdin in Maine. The story offers a landscape of silent forests and beautiful lakes. But as a writer with comic genius, Bryson also finds humor in the struggles that he and his old friend, Stephen Katz, went through.
Lots of silly things happen along the way. At the beginning, Bryson reads about the dangers of the wild and stays awake for hours each night, because he is worried he will be killed by bears. Later the two middle-aged men try to climb a mountain but get caught in a snow-storm. They get lost more than once, but they always manage to find their way back to the trail. They also meet a lot of strange people.
But the story is more than just a laugh-out-loud hike. Bryson also talks about acid rain(酸雨), the hunting of birds, and damage to the ecosystem(生態(tài)系統(tǒng)). It’s a mix of the silly and the serious, a fresh way of getting readers to actually care about the environment problems. As the website Book Browse said in a review, the book “will certainly become a modern classic of travel literature”.

Real Superheroes
Photographer Josh Rossi has used his cameras to show the world’s real superheroes — young children who are battling severe disease and disabilities.
The heartwarming project began in 2016, when Rossi realized his then three-year-old daughter’s dream of becoming Wonder Woman (神奇女俠).
The photographer says, “I got so many emails and calls from families who had children with diseases. They kept telling me that their kids were the REAL superheroes.”
Since it was Wonder Woman that created the idea. Rossi decided to focus on the superheroes that appear with her in the movie Justice League. To make the photos more meaningful, he matched each child with a superhero. They had the most in common.
●Teagan Pettit was born with only half a heart. The nine-year-old loves and respects Superman. The photographer says, “Superman and Teagan both have hearts of steel!”
●The second member was Kayden Kinckle. The five-year-old uses prosthetics (假肢) to walk. To Rossi, Kayden’s perfect superhero was Cyborg, who was a healthy boy before a terrible accident, forcing his father to keep him alive with robotic parts.
●Simon Fullmer, who suffers from a rare type of nerve cancer (神經(jīng)癌), is fond of Batman. According to his mom, the five-year-old never complains. Since the brave boy is dealing with his “enemy” like a true superhero, Rossi, thought he was the perfect Batman.

Sun Ruifeng, a mother in Beijing, changed some of her plans for her 8-year-old son’s summer vacation. She looked for an English training course, but in the end, she changed it to a swimming training class.
“Due to the stricter regulations (規(guī)定) on subject-training classes, many parents like me choose sports or other projects for developing interests instead,” Sun said.
Sun’s choice is part of the result of the government’s growing efforts to lighten the academic pressure on young students.
On July 24, Chinese government introduced a guideline (意見(jiàn)) to ease the burden (負(fù)擔(dān)) of excessive homework and off-campus training for primary and junior high school students. It lists requirements in areas such as reducing the amount and the difficulty of homework and improving the quality of education and after-class services provided by schools.
For example, homework for children below the third grade is not allowed, while homework for junior high school students should take no longer than 90 minutes to finish.
According to the guideline, training institutions (機(jī)構(gòu)) cannot teach students content that is too advanced for the school curriculum. No training courses can be taught on weekends, national holidays or during winter and summer vacations.
According to Global Times, more than 75 percent of Chinese urban children, from Grade 1 to Grade 12, are enrolled in training programs. However, some training institutions take part in anxiety marketing, selling unnecessary programs that increase the burden on students.
Many parents showed their support for the new moves. “Subject learning is enough at school and we hope to improve the children’s overall quality of life during holidays,” a parent surnamed (姓) Zhou in Guangzhou told Xinhua.
However, there are also some concerns. A parent surnamed Chen in Shanxi said that although she agreed on new moves, she worried about 6 .

Mark Twain is one of the most quoted authors ever. There are hundreds of his quotations(語(yǔ)錄) in books on posters and on websites. Here is an example:
“If you tell the truth, you don’t have to remember anything.”---Mark Twain.
Quotations like this one give us guidance. It reminds us that telling a lie is much more difficult than telling the truth. Telling a lie means you have to remember what you said each time you tell the lie. If you tell the truth, there is nothing to remember. He suggests that you shouldn’t lie not because it is wrong, but because it is hard work. Here is another example.
“Always obey your parents when they are present.”---Mark Twain
Again, the quotation give good advice---to always obey your parents, but the humourous part is when they are present. The quotation tells you to obey your parents when they are there with you ---because they can see what you are doing.
Albert Einstein’s quotations are also popular. Many of his quotations are inspirational(鼓舞人心的.). This means that they help us to do our best and be the best person we can be. Here is an example:
“Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The important thing is not to stop questioning.”---Albert Einstein
This is a much more serious quotation than the two Mark Twain ones. It gives us a lot to think about. Also, because this was said by Albert Einstein, it makes us want to take the quotation serious. This quotation give us hope that that we can learn from any mistake we made yesterday. It reminds us to always look closely at everything we do and ask the right questions to help us achieve our best.

Eat Your Schoolwork!
At a farmers’ market in Las Vegas, the tables have been turned. Here, the students do the teaching.
“This is a summer squash,” one student explained to a shopper. “This is an Armenian cucumber.”
“It's technically a melon,” his classmate said.
All the students were working at the outdoor market in 2019. They were selling food they grew themselves. The pride they felt was clear.
All these young gardeners are part of their school district’s Outdoor Garden Classroom Program. Students from more than 100 schools around Las Vegas have their own gardens. There they get their hands dirty while they learn. Twice a year, they also harvest and sell their “schoolwork” at the Giant Student Farmers’ Market. It is known to be the largest student-run farmers market in the country.
The program has grown since it began in 2013. Students work in teams with the support of their teachers. They take responsibility for all the different steps. Team members research what can grow in their climate. Then they discuss and plan their garden beds. They plant seeds, pluck weed(除草), and water their crops. Some schools also have small orchards of fruit trees.
When the time is ripe, students harvest the fruits (and vegetables) of their labors. The produce is then prepared for eating or selling. Students manage the business end, too. They handle the money at the farmers’ market. They also plan how to spend the money they make. All earnings are plowed back(再投資)into the gardening program. Sometimes students carry some of the harvest home to share with their families.
School gardens also provide food for thought in classrooms. Science lessons may cover the biology of plants. Students study the nutrition of the foods they grow. Maths and measurements become tools for planning garden fields. In fact, studies have shown that garden programs help improve student achievement.
The Outdoor Garden Classroom Program has also built relationships with the surrounding community. Local volunteers visit schools to share their expert knowledge. Business leaders teach students about managing a business. Schools even invite area chefs(廚師)to show simple recipes made with school-grown ingredients.
From planning and planting to harvest and market, school gardens offer valuable learning experiences as well as fun. Young gardeners get a chance to practice skills that will serve them all their lives.

A few months ago, I interviewed Max, an animal trainer. He was teaching a dolphin to do a back flip. Every time the dolphin jumped out of the water, even a little, Max would reward it with some food. When the dolphin did something else, Max would just ignore it. At first the dolphin kept swimming round the pool and having fun. But slowly, it learned that when it jumped, it got a reward. After few days the dolphin was jumping high enough to do a somersault(空翻). It had learned the first part of the trick.
I was fascinated. I kept thinking about how Max had trained that dolphin… and then I began to wonder if the same skills might work with my husband, Dylan. He was always leaving dirty washing on the floor and he often used to forget arrangements that we’ d made. Nagged(埋怨) him but he ignored me. The piles of washing just got bigger and he would forget even more arrangements. His bad habits didn’ t use to trouble me but now they were driving me mad!
So I decided to copy the dolphin trainer. I praised Dylan when he put anything in the washing basket, even if it was just one sock or when he remembered any arrangement, even if he got the wrong day. Slowly, the piles of dirty washing became smaller and his memory got better. I was so pleased that I told Dylan about my ‘ training’ . He looked thoughtful.
A few days later my computer didn’ t work again. It was continuously crashing and I called Dylan in a panic. The first thing he said was, “Well done, Jenny, you haven’ t made a drama out of this. You used to shout at me.” Suddenly, I felt calm. I liked his praise. Then I realized what was happening. He ______83______.

It was a few years ago. A friend had sent me a restaurant gift card for Christmas and I had picked a sunny Sunday afternoon to use it. It felt good taking my two grown sons and daughter to a nice sit-down restaurant instead of the fast-food places we usually ate at. The meal was delicious and we all had a good time just being together.
When the waitress brought the check. I looked down at it. The gift card covered almost all of it. I reached into my wallet to get enough cash to cover the rest. I saw two bills in my wallet. The first would cover the rest of the bill and give the waitress a nice tip. The second bill was much larger so I reached down to pick out the first one.
At that moment my mind flashed back to 30 years ago. I was working as a waiter in a restaurant much like the one we were in now. It was long hours of hard work for low pay. I went home just only making enough to feed my young family. I also remembered how more than once I saw the waitress counting their little tips worrying about how they were going to pay the rent and buy their kids things they needed. I remembered the pain in their eyes and sadness in their faces at the end of the day.
I blinked (眨眼) and was back in the present again. My fingers touched the smaller bill in my wallet. I smiled, pushed it back down, and picked out the much larger bill. I folded it around the gift card and covered both of them with the check. As we all got up from the table, I handed them to the hard-working waitress. “You keep the change,” I said with a smile and a happy heart.
We are all children of the same earth. Do your best to be kind then.

As a child, Alain Robert was afraid of heights. One day, when he was 12, he returned home from school. At the front door of his building, he looked for his keys. He didn’t have them. It was 3:30, and his parents worked until 6:00 p.m. Robert looked at his apartment on the eighth floor. He saw an open window. He closed his eyes and pictured himself climbing the building. When he opened his eyes, he told himself, “I can do it.” A quarter of an hour later, he was in his house, and his fear of heights was gone.
Today, Robert (known as the French Spideman) still climbs buildings. In 2004, he climbed Taipei 101(the tallest building in the world at the time), and in 2011 he climbed the Burj Khalifa Tower in Dubai. To reach the top of a building, Robert usually uses only his hands and special shoes. To climb the Burj Khalifa Tower, though, he was made to wear safety ropes.
Robert climbs as a hobby. He also does it to make money for charity( for children and the homeless). Climbing is his passion. Although many climbing accidents have left him seriously disabled, he has become one of the best solo climbers in the world. Alain says in an interview, “We set ourselves limits, but we are all strong enough to aim higher, to achieve our goals. All we have to do is find such strength within ourselves.”
When Robert climbs, he wants to send a message to people. If you have a dream—something you really want to do—it can become real. But you must be brave and keep trying. If something bad happens, don’t give up. Close your eyes and tell yourself, “I can do it.”

A reporter from Washington Post wrote a letter to people of Earth on behalf of(代表) the citizens on Venus.
Attention, People of EarthFine. The big secret is out. Many of your finest scientists have discovered there is life tens of millions of miles away-here, on the beautiful planet of Venus. Congratulations! However, we have a polite request: Please stay away.
We're serious. No spacecrafts to Venus, no tasks, no visits. If we wake up one morning and see so many of you people wandering around in spacesuits, we're going to be really upset.
We don't want to be impolite. It's just that we're shocked by what you've got going on down there.

On Friday, 7 June, an Italian Airlines flight was ready to leave Rome for Tokyo in Japan. All the passengers were on the plane. The departure time was 21:00. The seatbelt signs were turned on, so passengers were not allowed to stand up and had to stay in their seats. Then something unusual happened.
A woman decided that she had to go to the toilet. So she got up and walked to the back of the plane. The toilet door was clearly marked ‘TOILET’, but the woman opened a door next to the toilet. This door was the emergency exit and, when she opened it, the evacuation slide (逃生滑梯) opened. Because of this, the plane was not able to take off.
All the passengers had to leave the plane. When the evacuation slide has opened, there are two possibilities. Workers can change the slide at the airport, but the flight will be delayed for a long time. Or the plane can take off without an evacuation slide and replace it when it has landed, but the number of passengers on the plane must be smaller for safety reasons.
Thirty-eight passengers had to stay at a hotel at the Airport and take another flight the next day. The other passengers got back on the plane, and it finally took off at 05:10 on Saturday morning. It arrived in Tokyo at 14:10. Some passengers found that their luggage was still in Italy. But perhaps they were lucky …

Mr. Smith stood before his class of 30 students and was going to hand out the final exam papers. "I know how hard you have all worked to get ready for this test," he said. "And because I know you are all able to understand these questions, I'm ready to offer a B to anyone who would prefer not to take the test."
A number of students jumped up to thank the teacher and left the classroom. Mr. Smith looked at the rest of the students and said. "Does anyone else want to get a B? This is your last chance." Two more students decided to go. Seven students stayed. Mr. Smith then handed out the papers. There were only three sentences on the paper: Congratulations! You have received an A in this class. Keep believing yourself.
I never had a teacher who gave a test like that, but I think it is a test that any teacher could and should give. Students who do not have confidence in what they have learned are B students at most.
The same is true of students in real life. The A students are those who believe in what they are doing because they have learned from both successes and failures. They have learned life's lessons, whether from school education or from events in their lives, and have become better people. Scientists say that by the age of eight, 80 percent of what we believe about ourselves has already been formed. You are a big kid now and you realize that you have some limits. However, ________________. Sir Edmund Hillary, the first person to reach the top of Mount Qomolangma, said, "We do not conquer the mountain, but ourselves."

Half a year before graduation from college, my son began to seek a job. Due to the financial crisis, fewer companies would like to employ new staff. My son targeted a company that was going to hire only one person while there were more than twenty people filling their resumes.
After the interview, there would only be 3 who could enter the final round, which would later decide one person to be employed. Everything seemed to go quite well and my son passed the first round and entered the final round in a week.
On the day of the final interview, my son and other two candidates arrived at the interview place on time, waiting for the test. Unexpectedly, the interview was unbelievably simple. The interviewer only said to them, all of you are very super. Please go home and wait for our notice. We will tell you the result in 3 days. Good luck to all of you!" On the morning of the third day, my son received a text from the company shortly after breakfast that he was not employed. We all felt very disappointed.
In nightfall that day, my son suddenly told me excitedly on the phone, "Da, I have been employed!" Greatly surprised, I could not wait to ask him, "What's the whole matter?" My son told me that he received another text saying that he was employed. Actually, the first text sent to my son was also part of the test in the interview. Three men received the same text this morning and only my son’s reply was "Thank you." While the others said "Goodbye.".
Only then did I know that my son's "hope" came in that way. That is, when you feel disappointed, do not forget to say "Thank you." to the one who disappoints you. Saying Thank you." shows respect for others work and shows you are generous. Therefore, while under the same condition, you will get the upper hand in terms of opportunities compared with others!
