It was Christmastime, 1974. I was ten years old, but I was not looking forward to Christmas.
The previous spring, my mother and the man who was to become my stepfather had moved our family from rural Alabama to sunny Southern California. My little brother, Todd, and I were leaving behind our father and all of our extended family. This would be my first Christmas away from Alabama.
My elegant mother took to California like a swan to a royal lake. My athletic little brother enjoyed the climate that allowed him to be outdoors 11 months of the yea.
I, however, was a fat, awkward child with a high-pitched voice and a heavy southern accent. My first day at my new school, I went to the front of my fourth-grade class to introduce myself. All I said was my name and where I was from. The class erupted in laughter, with jeers of “He talks funny.” It took the teacher two minutes to restore order, and she was angry at me for having caused a disruption.
I was so sad and disappointed that I went to a gas station after school and used the phone booth there to place a collect call to Granny Smith. I was going to ask her whether I could return to Alabama and live with her, and whether she would send me the money for a bus ticket home. But the line was busy, ad despite several attempts, I didn’t get through.
To make matters worse, my mother was always encouraging me to lose weight. She had been a fat child herself and saw weight loss as the key to my happiness.
Granny Smith was everything good about Christmas. Her language of love was food. She would spend weeks cooking for Christmas Eve, when all of her children and grandchildren would gather at her house, which was tiny and saturated (使充滿) with plain Christmas decorations. But to my childhood aesthetic (審美), it was glorious.
She sewed new pajamas for all of her grandchildren. She searched for catalogs, newspaper advertisements, and stores all over the town to get us exactly the toy we had requested.
She was my solace. She was my resilience. She was magical.
I missed her desperately.
4. What can we know about the author?
A. He expected a merry Christmas.
B. He enjoyed the life in California.
C. He spent his childhood in California.
D. He left his father and relatives behind.
5. What does the underlined phrase in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. escaped from B. was brought to C. loved D. left
6. What happened when the author introduced himself to the new class?
A. He was made fun of by the class.
B. He hesitated to tell others his name.
C. He meant to make the teacher angry.
D. He tried to speak in a high-pitched voice.
7. Why did the author miss his grandmother very much?
A. Because she usually bought new pajamas and toys for him.
B. Because she often cooked delicious food for Christmas Eve.
C. Because she often saturated her house with nice decorations.
D. Because she usually comforted him and fulfilled his dreams.
C
Zoos are good for both animals and people. Although zoos rage in size and features, from small city zoos to large wildlife sanctuaries (鳥獸禁獵區(qū)), they all have positive features.
Zookeepers keep their animals in different environments and habitats (棲息地). Some animals live in large areas that contain the same kind of features their natural habitats contain. For example, some zoos have created special “floors” made of sand and clay that are soft like the jungle to protect elephants’ feet. Similarly, zoos keep their monkeys and apes in very large indoor areas with many “trees” ad swings for the mammals to exercise in. Generally speaking, animals in zoos live in areas and eat the same kind of food that they do in the wild.
Zoos actually protect animals. In fact, in some instances living in a zoo is better for animals than living in the wild. Many zoo animals are endangered in the wild ad zoos protect these species. Cheetahs, Giant Padas, and Chimpanzees are all examples of animals that are endangered in nature and need protection. For example, 100 years ago there were about 100,000 wild tigers but now there are less than 3,000. Another example is that, in nature, chimpanzee populations have really gone down. There used to be millions and now there are less than 150,000.
Finally, zoos educate people about the value of animals and the need to protect them throughout the world. It is difficult to understand why an animal is important without at least seeing that anima in an environment that shows where and how it lives in nature. Also, scientists can study animals more easily in a zoo rather than having to travel all over the world to get information about an animal’s habits.
Some people believe that zoos can never completely copy an animal’s natural habitat. But I think the best way to protect animals and educate people about the world of animals is to build high-quality, safe zoo environments and animal preserves for people to communicate with the animal kingdom. Support your local zoo!
8. What can we know about animals, habitats in zoos?
A. They are in the same place.
B. They are a little different in size.
C. They are similar to natural habitats.
D. They are large for animals to exercise in.
9. Why does the author say living in a zoo is better for animals?
A. Because most of the wild animals are endangered.
B. Because the number of wild animals is on the increase.
C. Because wild animals do not enjoy living in the jungle.
D. Because zoos can better protect those endangered animals.
10. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Zoos can never copy animals7 natural habitats.
B. Zoos are already high-quality ad safe enough.
C. Zoos allow people to communicate with animals.
D. Zoos provide the best choice for animal protection.
11. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To introduce animals in the zoos.
B. To encourage readers to support zoos.
C. To appeal to readers to protect animals.
D. To tell readers some stories about animals.

Monty Robert was a young man who was the son of a horse trainer who would go from stable (養(yǎng)馬場(chǎng)) to stable, race track to race track, farm to farm and ranch (大牧場(chǎng)) to ranch, training horses. As a result, the boy’s high school career was continually interrupted. When he was a senior, he was asked to write a paper about his dream about what he wanted to be ad do when he grew up.
That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of someday owning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great detail and he even drew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch, showing the location of all the buildings, the stables and the tracks. Then he drew a detailed floor plan for a 4,000-square-foot house that would sit on a 200-acre dream ranch.
He put a great deal of his heart into the project and the next day he handed it in to his teacher, Mrs. Smith. Two days later he received his paper back. On the front page was a large red A with encouraging words, “A fantastic dream! Work hard to achieve it!”
Monty Robert went home happily with the dream and couldn’t wait to share it with his father. But to his great sadness, his father said, “This is an unrealistic dream, my boy. I am just a horse trainer, earning just enough to feed a family. We have no money. We have no resources. Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of money. You have to buy the lad. You have to pay for the original breeding stock and later you will have to pay other fees. There is no way you could ever do it.”

Dear Tony,
I am happy to hear that you are going to China to spend the Spring Festival and you would like to prepare the New Year’s Eve dinner. On the New Year’s Eve, families will join together to prepare the family dinner. We traditionally have it at home, but in recent years, more and more families prefer to have it in restaurants.
The kinds of food vary from family to family, but some dishes are more popular. Many families have fish because the pronunciation of the Chinese character “fish” is the same as that of the Chinese character “abundant”. Another classic dish is which is especially popular in northern China.
Looking forward to your coming and if you like, we can have the family dinner together in my home.

Dear Tony,
I am happy to hear that you are going to China to spend the Spring Festival and you would like to prepare the New Year’s Eve dinner.
Yours,
Li Hua

I wish I could visit your fantastic ranch someday in the future.” With the encouragement of his teacher, Monty Robert kept his dream and spared no efforts to achieve it.
Ten years later, Monty Robert made his dream come true, owning a 200-acre horse ranch. He often invited Mrs. Smith to visit his ranch. Mrs. Smith would come with different students every time and Monty would share his story with them. At the end of his story, he always told the students, “There is no dream too big to achieve.” He would also express his gratitude to Mrs. Smith, who was the dream protector to him.
