第一節(jié) (共15小題,每小題2分,滿分30分)

I'm an American, and I can tell you, a college degree in the U.S. puts you way ahead of people who don't have one. If you want to work in cities like Boston, New York or San Francisco, your starting salary (薪水)will be much higher than people who don't have a degree, and you certainly need a good salary to afford an apartment in those cities. I think I'll get about $50,000 as a starting salary once I graduate, and I'll get a lot of fringe benefits (額外福利)too, like life insurance and a retirement (退休) plan. ----Steve
I'm from Argentina and everyone I talked to said “go to university”. Why did I listen to them? I've got massive debts now, and no chance of getting a good job. For the last five years, I've been in a dead-end job, with no safety, no prospects (前景), and low pay. Most of my friends left school at 16 and they' re doing really well now. They got promoted (提拔)while I worked very hard to get a degree, and it isn't worth the paper it's written on. Of course I feel bitter.
----Gordon
I did my degree at Cambridge University ----it was a three-year course. I don't like the idea that you study for a degree for what it gets you later in life. You should go to university because you're really interested in the subject you choose. I don't think my degree helped me to get a job. It may have given me an edge over non-graduates for getting interviews, I suppose. But I really enjoyed studying French literature, and don't regret it at all. When I left, I applied for lots of jobs, and I think employers liked the fact that I was confident and had good people skills. I'm now a computer programmer, nothing to do with literature. ----Helen

Trying to find a safe place after too many earthquakes and aftershocks and the death of my dear husband, I sold my little farm in Canterbury, New Zealand, and moved north to Blenheim with my three elderly Labradors, three ancient cats and six doves.
The place I bought appeared reasonably priced, quiet and safe for the animals. I moved in, but that was the moment of truth.
It had been left filthy. There were large holes in walls where heaters and shelves had been removed, and illegal plumbing (管道) and wiring. The small house was filled with rubbish and the log burner full of ashes. The fence was partly burnt and the irrigation (灌溉) system was damaged. All the firewood had been removed.
After a busy day moving in and cleaning, I touched a switch in the bathroom, thinking it was for the lights. Unluckily, it was for an illegally wired spa bath and it tripped the circuit (電路), leaving the house in total darkness. I had not yet located a torch or phone, and boxes were all over the place. All I could do was lie on the bed and shiver (顫抖)through that long, very cold winter night.
At first light, I took my dogs for a walk along the nearby riverbank and met several other dog walkers who were chatting while their dogs played nearby. Allison, Fay and Colin introduced themselves, and I shared with them my struggles.
Later that day, Allison arrived at my door with a wheelbarrow full of firewood and kindling (引火物). She had pushed it from her home, just under a kilometre away. Then Colin turned up with some goldfish in a bucket. “Put them in your pond," he said, knowing I had left my fish in Canterbury. Not long after, Fay came over with a community newsletter, and a bag of oranges from her garden.
These caring people gave me cheer and encouragement when I needed it most. After an unpleasant beginning, they made me and my dogs feel welcome in Blenheim, and are now our firm friends.
24.What does the underlined word “filthy” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Fairly tidy. B. Relatively new.

A. She lost her cellphone.
B. She had a restless sleep.
C. She enjoyed a comfortable spa bath.
D. She disconnected all the illegal wires.
26.How did Allison, Fay and Colin help the author?
A. They walked her dogs.
B. They warmed her heart.
C. They invited her for dinner.
D. They helped her with the cleaning.
27.What would be the best title for the text?
A. Kindling friendship B. Living in a new city
C. In search of new friends D. From Canterbury to Blenheim

The stock market is an important part of the world economy. The market itself is not a single place, like a store, but rather a system in which people buy and sell stocks. Obviously, people invest(投資)in stocks to make money. There are two basic ways to make money in the stock market.
One way to make money involves sharing some of the company's profits(利潤). Basically, when someone buys stocks in a company, that person becomes a shareholder---- one of many part-owners. As a part-owner, the shareholder gets part of any money that is left over after the company pays for costs and development. Usually, when a company is making a profit, it sends money to its shareholders up to four times a year. Sometimes the companies offer shareholders more stocks instead of cash. In either case, this payment is known as a dividend (紅 利). For people who own many shares of stock, dividends can add up to a great deal of money.
People can also make money when stock prices go up. When stock prices go up, the value of that stock increases. Thus, shareholders make money when they sell the stock at a higher price. However, stock prices don't always go up. Sometimes they stay the same; or worse, they go down. Of course, all shareholders hope stock prices go up, so they can make money on their investment. However, in the end, buying stocks is a lot like playing a betting game, and the investor who buys stocks is betting that the price will go up.
The question, then, is who controls stock prices? Actually, stock prices fluctuate (波動)due to several factors (因素). When a company's profits increase, its stock prices usually go up as well. Also, when business in general is good or bad in a particular industry, such as the IT industry, it can affect the stock prices of individual companies within that industry. Furthermore, sometimes there are global money problems that cause serious trouble for investors all around the world. Often, when this happens, the prices of most stocks on the stock market fall sharply. That, in turn, causes more global money problems, which can lower stock prices even more.
28.What is the text mainly about?
A. How companies make a profit.
B. How stock prices go up and down.
C. How investors predict stock prices.
D. How people gain money in the stock market.
29. What do shareholders get from the company?
A. Yearly payments. B. Part of its profits.
C. A share of its products. D. Cash prizes four times a year.
30. Why is buying stocks like playing a betting game?
A. Stock prices change too quickly.
B. It's difficult for investors to make money.
C. It's difficult to predict stock prices.
D. Shareholders buy their stocks at a high price.
31.What will happen if global money problems occur?
A. Investments in stocks will rise.
B. Companies will earn good profits.
C. Business in specific industries will disappear.
D. The stock market will suffer a huge price drop.

To adjust your baby to the world, educating him is your main assignment. How will you educate him? What role will he play in the world?
According to Darwin's theory of evolution (進化) of the species, we are a competitive species and one survives by adapting itself biologically to various environments through various ways. Competition was a resource useful for the progress of society and for the survival of human beings.
Today, however, the challenges are different. The 21st century is a computer science age, but there are environmental imbalances, deaths of thousands of children every day by starvation and countless epidemics (流 行病). Therefore, it is important that the philosophy of preparing our children for competition and power be replaced by one of preparing them for love and cooperation.
The earth is a unique home to us all. The ecological balance has to be pursued (追 求) and this pursuit shows the internal balance of each living being. We must educate our children so that they want to protect nature and thus to protect the opportunity to make themselves more powerful and able in society. Our children have to learn that we don't need to practice actions that benefit only our homeland while all other countries are destroyed. The destruction of other countries and lives leads to the impossibility of the future existence of the place we call home.
It imbalances the ecosystem and shades the hope of a better future, We would not show hate to a flower, grabbing it and throwing it to the floor and stepping on it. It would be foolish! But we are insensitive to the sight of a homeless person thrown to the ground and pretend it’s not our problem! Competition has led us to a state of total insensibility! Therefore, we must teach our children that the main necessity of men is love. Love is being good to ourselves , others and nature.
32. According to Paragraph 2, competition is______.
A. interesting B. beneficial
C. unnecessary D. ineffective
33.Why should we prepare children for cooperation in the 21st century?
A. We are faced with new challenges.
B. Many diseases are threatening people.
C. They will live in a more competitive society.
D. Environmental imbalance has caused many deaths.
34.What is the benefit of keeping an ecological balance?
A. It will help keep our internal balance.
B. Our kids will have more chance to succeed.
C. It will help make our future existence possible.
D. Our kids will have a better natural environment.
35. What is the purpose of this text?
A. To introduce ways of helping children overcome fears.
B. To explain the role competition plays in education.
C. To suggest an education of love and cooperation.
D. To explain why competition and cooperation should coexist.

Tips to stay safe and make smart choices
Even if you're a genius (天 才)at school, you still might be lost when it comes to getting from point A to point B. Don't get caught in a strange place without these basic safety tips.
★ Know where you're going.
Before you set out in an unfamiliar area, go to Google Maps to plan your journey and print it out. 36 Make sure that the location services are turned on on your phone, just in case you get lost.
★Know where your stuff is.
Never leave your backpack or shopping bags out of your sight. Carry your wallet in your front pocket or keep it close to your body. 37 A fun day out can turn into the worst headache ever if you realize you've left something behind.
★ 38
If you have the choice between a busy street and a deserted one, always pick the busy one. You are more likely to be attacked on dark, empty sidewalks than on ones with a crowd.
★Travel in packs.
Don't go anywhere ----especially an unfamiliar place ---- without a friend or two. 39
★ Don't let your music drown you out.
There's nothing wrong with listening to your iPod as you walk around town, but keep it at a low enough volume (音 量)so you can still hear passing cars. Losing concentration puts you at risk from accidents, attacks and getting lost. 40 Don't do it. Keep your head up and pay attention to the people and things going on around you.

Phoebe is from London and studies in our class as exchange student. She has been learning Chinese for the last three years, but she still fails in the final exam last week. Our teacher said she still had to learn for a lot in her new language, what made her very upset. See this, I tried to comfort her and gave her some suggestion on how to improve her language skills so she can get a good grade next time. She was so moving and had tears in her eyes. Share housework
It is reported that many students are unwilling to do housework at home, saying that they’re too busy studying. However, in my opinion, we students should take some time to help with the housework. Here are the reasons.
Doing housework is not only parents' job, but also ours. If we leave all the housework to our parents, it will make them very tired, because they have to work hard every day. Furthermore, it's not enough for us to just get good grades at school. Being independent is also important. In fact, the earlier we learn to be independent, the better our future will be. Doing housework can help us to learn to look after ourselves and therefore be independent.
So why not share housework at home?
