Backgrund knwledge is the knwledge a persn has abut the wrld when he r she starts t read a text. It is agreed that backgrund knwledge plays an imprtant rle in reading. Put simply, the mre yu knw abut a tpic, the easier it is fr yu t read a text, understand it,and remember the infrmatin.
T understand this, here are tw pints. First, backgrund knwledge enables readers t chse between different meanings f wrds. Fr example,if yu read the wrd“peratin"in a sprts article,yu might think abut a sprtspersn with a serius injury(傷). But if yu read the wrd in a math text,yu'd think abut a mathematical prcess. Secnd, understanding a text requires readers t fill missing infrmatin and make inferences. T d this, readers need t have sme basic knwledge abut the tpic.
Students get backgrund knwledge bth thrugh persnal experiences and by learning in the classrm. Then hw can teachers help students build backgrund knwledge? Here are sme suggestins.
Begin by teaching wrds in categries(類別). Fr example, teachers can try smething as simple as this:“Apples, bananas, strawberries, manges. They are a type f…. (fruit)”. Categries f bjects and the use f generic nuns(統(tǒng)稱)can help students increase vcabulary and develp cncepts(概念).
28 . Reading builds knwledge, but wide reading has usually been taken as reading abut a lt f different tpics. Teachers can try a different way:encurage children t find an interest and read as many bks as they can n ne tpic. This will help them develp a deeper knwledge n a tpic.
Use multimedia(多媒體). Direct experiences are the mst effective ways t build knwledge. There is nthing mre exciting fr students than learning thrugh direct experiences, such as field trips and ther activities. Althugh multimedia cannt replace real-life experiences,it can ften prvide a lt f infrmatin that we culd nly wish t experience firsthand. It can als intrduce children t imprtant wrds and cncepts.
Backgrund knwledge is imprtant in a student's ability t fully understand a text. Teachers' effrts can help students becme strnger thinkers and life-lng readers and learners.
27. The writer talks abut the wrd“peratin"in Paragraph2 t explain _________.
A. what backgrund knwledge is
B. why backgrund knwledge is imprtant
C. when peple need backgrund knwledge
D. hw peple develp backgrund knwledge
28. Which f the fllwing wuld be the best tpic sentence fr Paragraph 5?
A. Make wide reading interesting.
B. Intrduce different tpics t students.
C. Encurage tpic-centered wide reading.
D. Help students find their favurite bks.
29. What can we learn frm the passage?
A. Vcabulary is the greatest difficulty in understanding a text.
B. Making inferences has little cnnectin with backgrund knwledge.
C. Multimedia is mre useful than direct experiences in building knwledge.
D. Develping vcabulary and cncepts can help build backgrund knwledge.

Teenagers wh vlunteer are mre likely t d better in schl and are less likely t get invlved in risky behavirs, studies shw. They als get scial skills and wrk experience that can pay ff later in life. Hwever,if many busy teenagers are given a chice, they wuld simply skip vluntary service. That's why requiring cmmunity service is imprtant, supprters say. In additin, there is little prf t supprt that mandatry cmmunity service weakens yung peple's mtivatin(動機)t jin in future service. In fact, studies shw that mandatry service is cnnected with strng wish t take part in future vlunteering.

But t her surprise, she nt nly met the service requirement sner than she'd expected, but als learned a lt,and fund that she lved vlunteering. Bellamy is nw glad that her service wasn't by chice. “Requiring cmmunity service wuld give ther peple the chance I had,she said.
S ask yurself: Wuld yu vlunteer if it weren't mandatry?Culd the benefits f vlunteering make it wrthwhile n matter hw teenagers get invlved?I suppse cmmunity service is smething that shuld be encuraged even if it is just a duty at the beginning.
30. Sme peple are against mandatry cmmunity service because·_______.

C. students fall shrt in their abilities t d it
D. students get little immediate benefit frm it

A. give up perfrming B. get interested in
C. have difficulty in ding D. enjy benefits frm

A. Students take part in cmmunity service because f strng lve.
B. Sme students dn't have the chances t ffer cmmunity service.
C. Mandatry service makes students lse wish t vlunteer in the future.
D. It's pssible and beneficial fr students t meet schls' service requirement.
33. What is the writer's main purpse in writing this passage?
A. T express supprt fr mandatry cmmunity service.
B. T stress the imprtance f balancing vlunteer wrk and study.
