Why Des Walking thrugh Drways Make Us Frget?
We’ve all dne it. Run upstairs t get yur keys, but frget that it is them yu’re lking fr nce yu get t the bedrm. Open the fridge dr and reach fr the middle shelf nly t realize that we can’t remember why we pened the fridge in the first place.
We can understand thse temprary mments f frgetfulness may be mre than just an annyance. Althugh these errrs can be embarrassing, they are als cmmn. It’s knwn as the “Drway Effect”, and it shws sme imprtant features f hw ur minds are rganized. Understanding this might help us accept thse temprary mments f frgetfulness as mre than just an annyance.
The Drway Effect ccurs when ur attentin mves between levels, and it reflects the trust in ur memries—even memries fr what we were abut t d—n the envirnment we’re in.
Imagine that we’re ging upstairs t get ur keys and frget that it is the keys we came fr as sn as we enter the bedrm. Psychlgically, what has happened is that the plan (“Keys!”) has been frgtten even in the middle f carrying ut a necessary part f the strategy (“G t bedrm!”). Prbably the plan itself is part f a larger plan (“Get ready t leave the huse!”), which is part f plans n a wider and wider field (“G t wrk!”, “Keep my jb!”, “Be a prductive and respnsible citizen”, r whatever). Each field requires attentin at sme pint. Smewhere in cntrlling the cmplex levels, the need fr keys suddenly cmes int mind.
Our memries, even fr ur gals, are planted in webs f cnnectins. That can be the physical envirnment in which we frm them, which is why revisiting ur childhd hme can bring back a fld f previusly frgtten memries, r it can be the mental envirnment—the set f things we were just thinking abut when that thing suddenly cmes int mind.
The Drway Effect ccurs because we change bth the physical and mental envirnments, mving t a different rm and thinking abut different things. That hurriedly thught-up gal, which was prbably nly ne plate amng the many we’re trying t spin ( 旋 轉(zhuǎn) ), gets frgtten when the cntext changes.
The main purpse f the first paragraph is .
A. t call attentin t the danger f frgetfulness B. t remind us f ur weak memry
C. t present daily factsD. t intrduce the tpic
What des the writer think abut thse temprary mments f frgetfulness?
They are embarrassing and shuld be avided.
They can be understd and accepted.
They are imprtant features f ur minds.
They shw that ur minds are ut f rder.
Which f the fllwing memries was frmed in the physical envirnment?
While visiting yur primary schl, yu recall a frgtten memry.
When yu sing a sng, yu think f a frmer classmate.
Yu are playing basketball when yu remember yur hmewrk.
A ty helps yu remember a childhd friend.
Hw is the passage mainly develped?
A. By prviding data.B. By listing study findings.
C. By making cmparisns.D. By giving examples.
C
The thught f lw material need and being unwilling t wrk, marry and have children, is described as a “l(fā)ying dwn” lifestyle recently. It creates an emtinal reactin amng many yung Chinese wh are eager t take pause t breathe in this fast-paced and highly cmpetitive sciety.
Many yung peple cmplained t the Glbal Times that duties, including wrk stress, family argument and financial pressure, have pushed them “against the wall”. They said they hate the “invlutin (內(nèi)卷)”, jking that they wuld rather give up sme f what they have than get stuck in an endless cmpetitin against peers(同齡人).
“Instead f always fllwing the ‘gd quality’ f struggle and sacrifice t bear the stresses, they
prefer a temprary lying dwn as release and adjustment,” said an expert. “It is n wnder that sme yung peple, under the grwing pressures frm child-raising t paying the mrtgage ( 按 揭 ) tday, wuld try t live in a simple way and leave the wrries behind.”
Interestingly, the majrity f yung peple, wh claim t be big fans f the lying dwn philsphy, admit that they nly accept a temprary lying dwn as a shrt rest. It is true that with the great imprvement f living cnditins, sme Chinese yuth have partially lst the spirit f hardship and are nt willing t bear t much hard wrk. But in fact, lying dwn is nt entirely cmfrtable. Yung peple wh lie dwn always feel ashamed abut their cnstant lss f mrale (士氣).
“Yung peple have bth ambitin and cnfusin abut their future, but mst f us have refused t waste pprtunities and challenges,” a pstgraduate student tld the Glbal Times. “It’s n use running away. I have t ‘stand up’ and face the reality sner r later.”
Which f the fllwing is NOT a “l(fā)ying dwn” lifestyle accrding t the passage?
Giving up struggle and sacrifice.
Stpping t breathe in a stressful life.
Being invlved in varius scial activities.
Being uninterested in material enjyment and refusing t shulder duties.
What might have caused the “l(fā)ying dwn” lifestyle amng the yung?
Pr health frm wrking s hard.
Grwing pressure frm family and scial life.
Increasing material wealth frm families.
Temprary adjustment t failure in cmpetitins.
What’s the expert’s attitude tward the “l(fā)ying dwn” grup?
A. OppsedB. Understanding.C. Supprtive.D. Unclear.
What can be inferred abut the yung generatin frm the text?
They never really drp their respnsibilities.
They really enjy the “l(fā)ying dwn” lifestyle.
They find their dreams far beynd their reach.
They wuld rather escape than take challenges.
D
Cnvincing smene t change their mind is really the prcess f cnvincing them t change their tribe ( 部 落 ). If they abandn their beliefs, they run the risk f lsing scial ties. Yu can’t expect smene t change their mind if yu take away their cmmunity t.
The way t change peple’s minds is t becme friends with them, t cmbine them int yur tribe, t bring them int yur circle. Nw, they can change their beliefs withut the risk f being abandned scially.
The British philspher Alain de Bttn suggests that we simply share meals with thse wh disagree with us: “Sitting dwn at a table with a grup f strangers has the incmparable and dd benefit f making it a little mre difficult t hate them withut punishment. Prejudice and cnflict between grups f peple frm different natins r races feed ff abstractin. Hwever, during a meal, smething abut handing dishes arund, unflding napkins at the same mment, even asking a stranger t pass the salt makes us less likely t hld the belief that the utsiders wh wear unusual clthes and speak in distinctive accents deserve t be sent hme r attacked. Fr all the large-scale plitical slutins which have been prpsed t ease racial r cultural cnflict, there are few mre effective ways t prmte tlerance between suspicius neighburs than t frce them t eat supper tgether.”
Perhaps it is nt difference, but distance that prduces tribalism and unfriendliness. As prximity increases, s des understanding. I am reminded f Abraham Lincln’s qute, “I dn’t like that man. I must get t knw him better.” Facts dn’t change ur minds. Friendship des.
The Japanese writer Haruki Murakami nce wrte, “Always remember that t argue, and win, is t break dwn the reality f the persn yu are arguing against. It is painful t lse yur reality, s be kind, even if yu are right.”
When we are in the mment, we can easily frget that the gal is t cnnect with the ther side, cperate with them, befriend them, and integrate them int ur tribe. We are s caught up in winning that we frget abut cnnecting. It’s easy t spend yur energy labeling peple rather than wrking with them.
The wrd “kind (family and relatives)” riginated frm the wrd “kin (ld fashin f family and relatives).” When yu are kind t smene, it means yu are treating them like family. This, I think, is a gd methd fr actually changing smene’s mind. Develp a friendship. Share a meal. Gift a bk. Be kind first, be right later.
Peple are likely t change their mind when they .
A. change their beliefsB. mve t a new cmmunity
C.are made friends withD. are given smewhere t g
Accrding t the passage, sharing meals is effective in building cnnectins because it .
prmtes understanding and tlerance amng peple
makes peple fcus n eating rather than cnflicts
brings benefits t the peple having dinner tgether
pleases peple with different beliefs r accents
What des the underlined wrd “prximity” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Cmmunicatin.B. Nearness.C. Actin.D. Pliteness.
The authr qutes frm Haruki Murakami t imply(暗示) that .
kindness is mre imprtant than right
breaking dwn ne’s reality is easy
lsing ne’s identity is a painful prcess
arguing and winning are nt imprtant

Yu are bund t face sme challenges in life as situatins arund yu change. Here are sme effective tls t help yu master change.
Keep things in perspective.
Being able t step back and bserve each situatin within the cntext f the “bigger picture” f yur life helps yu prcess yur feelings abut the imprtance f a certain event r situatin. Learning t keep things in a healthy perspective may help reduce distractin and mderate emtinal respnses.

39
This is an imprtant pint. Early in life, with little r n experience t draw upn, yu may feel cnfused and afraid f making changes and cnfrnting new situatins. That’s nt surprising. Peple ften fear change and what utcme change will bring. 40 But life is abut change. A situatin that’s fine fr ne specific time in yur life may nt be right r apprpriate fr anther time. Knwing hw yu respnd t change and what t lk ut fr emtinally, psychlgically, and physically is essential t gaining cmfrt when handling new situatins.
Dn’t try t frce an utcme.
Peple are ften afraid t leave their cmfrt zne.
Becme familiar with hw yu respnd t change.
This keeps yu fcused n the specific situatin at hand.
View each situatin as a new pprtunity rather than a barrier. F.Understand that things dn’t always wrk ut as yu riginally planned.
G.This way, yu rganize yur effrts s yu can fully fcus yur attentin n a situatinal gal.
