With the belief that “Schools should not frighten children”, David Schenck founded the Schenck School for some special children in Atlanta, Georgia, to help children overcome their trouble and recover their lost self-esteem.
Growing up in Chappaqua, New York. David started out in public school, and had trouble right from the very beginning. He didn't feel like he was part of the class and didn't feel like he could do any of the things they did. An uncle paid the tuition for him to go to The Salisbury School in Connecticut. “They had never seen someone so poorly prepared for their school,” he says. “I had to go back a couple of years because I didn't know anything about reading and writing. I was trying to go to the 7th grade, but having lots of trouble there. I graduated when I was 20, directly to the Army, and from the Army I took advantage of the G. I. Bill(軍人安置法案)and got a degree from University of Michigan.”
When David left for a teaching position in New England, he did not know that this move would change his life and the lives of thousands of young people with dyslexia-nor did he know. at that time, that he had such trouble. He worked with The Rectory School in Connecticut, which wanted him to work during the regular school year and at a camp during the summer. The camp was for dyslexics and it was there that David received his formal introduction to dyslexia and training in the Orton-Gillingham approach.
After a few years at the camp. David returned to Atlanta. He earned his master's degree in education at Emory University and landed a teaching job at Georgia Military Academy. He was charged with teaching students how to read and write. From that environment, the idea for The Schenck School was born. With his help, these children got the appropriate intervention they desperately needed.

Renewable energy projects, including onshore and offshore wind and solar farms. have so far been subsidized(資助)by government support schemes. This has led to some to complain that clean energy is pushing up bills.
However, the most recently approved offshore wind projects will most likely operate with ‘negative subsidies’—paying money back to the government. The money will go towards reducing household energy bills as the offshore wind farms start producing power in the mid-2020s.
This is the conclusion of an analysis by an international team led by Imperial College London researchers published today in Nature Energy.
Lead researcher Dr Malte Jansen, from the Centre for Environmental Policy at Imperial, said: “Offshore wind power will soon be so cheap to produce that it will undercut fossil-fueled power stations and may, be the cheapest form of energy for the UK. Energy subsidies used to push up energy bills, but within a few years cheap renewable energy will see them brought down for the first time. This is an astonishing development.”
The analysis for five countries in Europe, including the UK, focused on a series of government auctions(拍賣)for offshore wind farms between February 2015 and September 2019. Companies that want to build wind farms bid in the auctions by stating the price at which they will sell the energy they produce to the government.
These are known as ‘contracts for difference’ or CIDs. If a company's bid is higher than the wholesale electricity price on the UK market once the wind farm is up and running, then the company will receive a subsidy from the government to top up the price.
However, if the stated price(規(guī)定價格)is less than the wholesale price, then the company will pay the government back the difference. This payback is then passed through to consumer's energy bills, reducing the amount that homes and businesses will pay for electricity.
The winning companies said they could build new offshore wind farms for around £40 per megawatt hour(MWh)of power. This was a new record set by these wind farms with bids 30 percent lower than just two years earlier.
28. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. Offshore wind farms to be built in the UK could reduce household energy bills by producing electricity very cheaply.
B. Offshore wind farms will not be subsidized by government in the near future.
C. The importance of CDs.
D. The operation of negative subsidies
29. According to Paragraph 2, offshore wind farms _______.
A. will stop producing power in the mid-2020s B. are paying money back to the government
C. will help reduce household energy bills D. will all operate with negative subsidies'
30. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. The renewable energy projects will lead to some to complain that clean energy is pushing up bills.
B. The company whose bid is less than the wholesale electricity price will receive a subsidy.
C. The stated electricity price is now higher than the wholesale electricity price.
D. Fossil-fueled power will be soon produced cheaply,
31. What is the author's attitude towards the offshore wind farms?
A. Curious. B. Pessimistic. C. Indifferent. D. Optimistic.
32. Where does this text probably come from?
A. A science fiction. B. A financial magazine.
C. An advertisement D. A science report

Meal kits(餐具)cut food waste but packaging is a problem
Home delivery meal kits can slash(大幅消減)food waste by more than two-thirds, but suppliers need to switch to reusable packaging to make them environmentally friendly.
33 That means leftovers are minimized. But while the delivery services score well or reducing food waste, buying the same ingredients from the supermarket almost always saves energy overall simply because meal kits use so much single-use packaging. The good news is that if you have meals that are tailored for consumption. people won't over-buy and you have less food waste. You fine-tune the portions to what people will actually eat.
Beyond the cost of the waste itself, thrown-away food generates methane(甲烷)that contributes to climate change. 34 A 2018 report from the Boston Consulting Group found that the waste was set to soar by a third by 2030 when global food waste was estimated to reach 2.1 bn tonnes.
35 If people only went to buy goods that are unlikely to decay such as soap and toiler paper, they might only have to visit the supermarket once every couple of months. That delivery truck can carry meals for you and dozens of neighbors. 36
The study found that even if delivered meal kits reduced food waste to zero, they would still use up more energy overall than buying the same food from the supermarket unless the energy used for the meal kit packaging was cut by a fifth. 37 All the environmental benefits arc lost. But if the packaging can be reused, you can get some benefits.
A. Tailor-made meal kits save waste by providing precise quantities of fresh ingredients.
B. If it's single-use and thrown away, the packaging is a killer.
C. In that case, you might replace dozens of car trips with one truck trip.
D. Meal knits arrive on your doorstep by truck filled with every ingredient you need.
E. If food waste was a country, it would rank third in emissions behind the US and China.
F. However, meal kits are likely heading for the mainstream.
G. Meal kits can reduce transport emissions if they mean people take fewer trips to the supermarket.

Eggs, bacon, bagels, and croissants(羊角面包)her favourite meal of the day sat right in front of her telling her to have more, probably just this one day. Her hand reached out for the last croissant; “STOP” said her mind, “PLEASE” begged the nineteen-year-old heart. Annie could feel the tires around her waist, weighing her down, emotionally and physically. She pulled her hand back, eyeing the inviting croissant, which would have been hers if only she had not decided to follow her dream, a dream which seemed beyond her reach.
But there she was, she wanted it, and wanted it badly, a fantasy of a teenager to fit into the beautiful peacock green bikini(比基尼). A trip had been planned, to the sunny beaches, by a group of friends, and the trip included her. She used to sit depressed listening to her slim friends discuss about the kind of clothes they purchased, and how short each of their skirts were, and how beautiful they looked. She wanted to see their expression change from surprise to admiration, so she decided to go on diet and take fitness courses.
Weeks passed and her patience started to die away. The fat was stubborn and refused to melt fast, but the time went fast. No matter how less she ate, she still looked awfully plump(胖的), which annoyed her and she was ready to call it quits. She sat on her bed and wept an entire evening ignoring her dinner. Her tears dried up, and she lay down on her bed staring at the ceiling, letting random thoughts pass through her mind, Then she heard two women talking outside her window. She heard one woman saying: “My child is special, and every child is god's gift. It doesn't matter what's on the outside, inner self is what matters.”

Dear schoolmates,
On the occasion of World Animals Day I am writing to call on everyone to pay close attention to the wildlife protection.
Wild animals are facing the problem of food shortage with serious pollution and the use of insecticide. Besides, man is killing off species just for getting their fur, skin. etc. which may account for the risk of extinction.
Wildlife protection not only plays an important role in keeping a balanced ecosystem but also is a sign showing how civilized and advanced a country is. It's high time we should join up to educate people around us and raise their awareness of wildlife protection.
Thank you!

Curious, Annie got up and looked out of her window, There, sitting by his mother's feet, was a boy playing with a Rubik's cube, his face twisted with each turn of the cube and his mismatched eyes were fixed on the colourful object. Despite his deformity, there was something angelic about his body when he showed his mother the finished cube. The mother smiled at him as if he were the most handsome boy in the world.
Annie turned her eyes away from the scene and saw her own figure in the mirror. Yes, she was plump and her face was chubby. But she was healthy and her skin rosy. With loving starry eyes and curly hair, she looked almost like some lady from a classic portrait. Mum once said when she played Beethoven on the piano in her purple dress, she looked like a real princess. She smiled to her reflection, first tentatively and then with more confidence. She made a new decision. She would throw her bikini into the dustbin. After all, a girl doesn't have to fit in a bikini to be beautiful.

W: I know. You' re right. I'm in a bad mood today because my shoes broke. I've had them for ages. I even can't afford a new pair while my friends have their own new clothes and new bags. (16)
M: I'll get you some but you must press on with your English. Don't let difficulties hold you back Problems can be overcome. (15)
Text 10
In what may be one of the most amazing discoveries in recent year, scientists at an American university have found a way to turn one of the main chemicals that causes air pollution into a resource. (17)Carbon dioxide is a form of pollution released from the burning of fuels such as coal, oil, and wood. (18)Transportation and electricity production are its major sources. The researchers at Rutgers University have created a technique that changes carbon dioxide into valuable raw materials. (17)Using cheap and plentiful metals, the process efficiently turns carbon dioxide gas into water and carbon blocks that can be used as building blocks for other products. The process is 99% efficient, which is a main reason that this result is so impressive. Products that can be produced by this technique include raw materials for use in the chemical, medical, clothing and construction industries. (19)The scientists have created a company to develop commercial applications for this technique. It proves a saying by a famous American engineer that “Pollution is nothing but the resources we are not harvesting.”(20)
