Lawn Games for Adults That’ll Make You Feel Like a Kid Again
Experts say that engaging in playful activities through adulthood can help lower stress, improve cognitive functions, and build social bonds with others, which is so much more than what your phone can do for you. So what are you waiting for? Round up the family, grab one of these lawn games for adults, and let the good time scroll.
Spikeball Game Set $59.99
The flexible, hula-hoop-sized net stands on its foldable legs and can be taken to the beach or the park to give four players plenty of space to run around. Start the two-on-two game by bouncing a ball off the net, sending it flying toward your opponents—they have three passes between them to send the ball back over to your team. When they miss, you score, and the first one to get to 21 wins.
The Pocket Shot $25.00
Who doesn’t love lining up cans and shooting them down with a slingshot? It’s demanding yet thrilling. The Pocket Shot is a super powerful slingshot that shoots at two or three times the rate of a regular slingshot. It’s super tiny, so it fits in your pocket.
Giant 4-Connect-In-A-Row $79.99
Two players at a time try to insert their red or blue coins into the wooden frame to form a vertical or horizontal line of all the same color. It’s way more challenging than you’d think.

I have frequently taught Research Methods and Design to college students at several institutions. I love teaching this course. One reason, of course, is that I enjoy thinking about research methodology (方法學) and sharing it with others. The other reason, however, is the obvious impact that it has on students. Every term, one (if not more) student tells me how taking this course has affected him/her: “I used to just read articles and believe what they said, but now I find myself asking ‘Is this true? How do they know? Is this a well designed study?’ ” That is what I want the students to achieve in this course.
This brings to mind something written by Dorothy L. Sayers in 1948. One of her books, The Lost Tools of Learning speaks to Sayers’ thoughts on education. “By teaching our young men and women to read, we have left them at the mercy of the printed words. By the invention of the film and the radio, we have made certain that no dislike for reading shall protect them from the constant battery of words, words, words. They do not know what the words mean: they are victims to words in their emotions instead of being the masters of them in their intelligence.”
We are well past the 1940s, but her observation is still relevant. Sayers’ point is well taken. In the world of 24-hour news and social media that often resembles the Wild West, the ability to carry out evaluations has never been more important. In order to resist the distortions with which we are constantly bombed in the media, as well as be able to present a persuasive argument, we must be able to reason well, and think and give a judgement carefully.
When my students begin the Research Methods and Design course, they are generally not content to read all those research article I give. However, by the end of the course, they are excited about their newly obtained abilities.
24. What is the author’s course goal for her students?
A. Reading more books. B. Thinking critically.
C. Designing studies well. D. Questioning themselves.
25. What did Sayers imply about education?
A. It was beneficial to learners’ development.
B. It was conventional by teaching learners to read.
C. It was satisfying with the invention of film and video.
D. It was worrying because learners were subject to words.
26. What does the underlined word “distortions” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Popular news. B. Various evaluations.
C. Misleading information. D. Persuasive arguments.
27. What’s the purpose of the text?
A. To review a book. B. To introduce a writer.
C. To criticize social media. D. To suggest a practical skill.

C
I remember when Kamala Harris became Joe Biden’s running mate, it seemed funny how many people pronounced her name incorrectly. On one occasion, a news host became upset when being corrected, and purposely called her Kumbaya.
I am no stranger to this issue as many of my students are from Asian and Middle Eastern countries, and sometimes their names are difficult for me to pronounce, even after asking them how to say it. Many students seem unwilling to correct me when I attempt to learn their names correctly. The other thing I’ve seen in growing numbers is students “adopting” an English name. It’s much more common than many think, for people to change their names in order to fit in.
This is especially the case when it comes to seeking jobs. Racial and cultural minorities often attempt to avoid discrimination hiring by hiding racial cues on the resume including changing their name. This is referred to as “resume whitening”. Research shows almost 50 percent of black and Asian job applicants did so.
Xian Zhao from the University of Toronto researches ethnic name pronunciation, saying that many people don’t understand that habitually pronouncing an unfamiliar name inaccurately is a form of indirect discrimination. It sends a message that “you are the minorities” says Zhao. “You are not important in this environment, so why should I take time and my effort to learn it?” On the other end, those with ethnic names frequently don’t correct people, even when their names are pronounced wrong repeatedly, feeling it is better just to keep the peace and not stand out for their names are difficult.
It is important to try to pronounce everyone’s name as they pronounce it. This communicates respect of them as a person and their culture. There is nothing wrong with asking someone to repeat their name so that you can learn to pronounce it properly. This is usually appreciated.
28. How do the author’s Asian students respond when their names are incorrectly pronounced?
A. They attempt to laugh at it. B. They tend to accept it.
C. They offer to correct the author. D. They agree to change their names.
29. Which of the following can be seen as “resume whitening”?
A. A change in work environment.
B. A ban on racial discrimination in workplace.
C. A practice of using Western names in job seeking.
D. A boast about one’s educational background in the resume.
30. What can we infer from Xian Zhao’s research?
A. Ethnics accept their names being mispronounced to save trouble.
B. Ethnics fight effectively with the discrimination against their names.
C. Many westerners pronounce ethnic names incorrectly on purpose.
D. Many westerners make efforts to pronounce ethnic names correctly.
31. What’s the author’s attitude toward pronouncing ethnic names correctly?
A. Critical. B. Uncaring. C. Supportive. D. Ambiguous.

D
When Mexican scientist of the evolution of animal behavior, Laura Cuaya, moved to Hungary for her postdoctoral studies in Budapest, she brought her pet dog, Kun-kun, along for the ride. Cuaya couldn’t help noticing how locals warmed to dogs. This prompted her naturally curious scientific mind to start asking questions. “Here people are talking all the time to Kun-kun, but I always wonder if Kun-kun can recognize that people in Budapest speak Hungarian, not Spanish?” So she set out to find an answer through a scientific study.
Cuaya and her colleagues decided to use brain images from MRI scanning to shed light on her hunch. They worked with dogs of various ages that had, until the experiment, only heard their owners speak just one of the two languages, Spanish or Hungarian. Not surprisingly, getting the dogs to happily take part in the experiment took some creative coaxing (勸誘) and animal training! The researchers first needed to teach Kun-kun and her 17 fellow participating dogs including a labradoodle, a golden retriever and Australian shepherds, to lie still in a brain scanner. Their pet parents were always present, and they could leave the scanner at any point.
The research team played children’s classic book The Little Prince in both Spanish and Hungarian while scanning the dogs’ brains with an MRI machine. They were looking for evidence that their brains reacted differently to a familiar and unfamiliar language. The researchers also played scrambled versions of the story to find out if dogs could distinguish between speech and non-speech.
The images reveal that dogs’ brains show different patterns of activity for an unfamiliar language than for a familiar one—the first time anyone has proved, researchers say, that a non-human brain can distinguish between two languages. This means that the sounds and rhythms of a familiar language are accessible to non-humans.
The team also found that the brains of older dogs were more skilled at detecting speech “suggesting a role for the amount of language exposure”. They suggest that dogs have refined their ability to distinguish between human languages over the long process of domestication.
32. What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A. The concern of the researcher. B. The significance of the study.
C. The background of the study. D. The introduction to the researcher.
33. What did Cuaya consider when choosing dogs for study?
A. Age limits. B. Language exposure.
C. Brain patterns. D. Owners’ commands.
34. How do researchers comment on the results of the study?
A. Unreasonable. B. Contradictory.
C. Compromising. D. Groundbreaking.
35. Which of the following can be the best title?
A. Dogs Can Tell Foreign Languages
B. Dog Brains Have Different Patterns
C. Old Dogs Know More About Human Speech
D. Dogs Can Differ Speech From Non-Speech

If you have watched the amazing Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, chances are that you have fallen in love with some winter sports and you’re already making sure your equipment is ready for them. 36 However, there’s another element to get ready for the slopes — your body. Even if you exercise regularly, skiing, snowshoeing or skating challenges your muscles in ways other activities don’t.
37 Your metabolism (新陳代謝) increases to warm you up. Your heart and lungs also need to work harder to warm air before it enters your body. Depending on the sport, certain muscles may also be used more frequently compared to activities in other seasons. The good news is that most winter sports involve heart endurance, muscle strength and muscle endurance. 38
But there are still some other things to think about. Skiing and snowboarding are great winter sports that provide a total body workout. 39 As anyone who has spent time skiing or snowboarding can prove, after a long day on the slopes, the body becomes extremely tired. 40 To avoid this, you need to take some time to strengthen your body and improve endurance. Before the winter season, a regular exercise program should include exercises that get the blood running while challenging the entire body, such as stair climbing or running. The intensity should vary from 20-45 minutes at least 3 to 5 days a week. As winter nears, adding a cardio (有氧的) workout longer in duration but lower in intensity can help increase endurance.
A. Maybe you haven’t bought all the equipment.
B. And that is when injuries are more likely to occur.
C. Exercising in the cold decreases your body temperature.
D. You should take advantage of this opportunity to have a rest.
E. Probably, you have got your skis tuned and skates sharpened.
F. All of them are areas that can be trained before the winter season.
G. However, it can be hard on the body the first time you hit the slopes.

I peered over my grandma’s shoulder as she sewed pieces of cloth together. The two pieces became one faster than I’d imagined. The colors, however, looked ugly when put together and none of the patterns matched. All the patches on this blanket seemed to disagree.
“Grandma, that’s the ugliest quilt(被子)I’ve ever seen.”
“Oh, sweetie, it’s warm and beautiful,” said Grandma, pointing to a pile of crazy patterned shirts and suits. “I can take these old clothes that Grandpa and I will never wear again and turn them into something useful and good. It’s not the quilts appearance but the love that sews it together that makes it beautiful. This quilt will keep you warm on a cold night like tonight. And I know that for a fact.” Grandma put her hand on my shoulder, “Not everyone is as lucky as we are. Here, put on your coat. We’ll get a second opinion about how ugly my quilts are.”
Grandma folded a finished quilt and tucked it into a shopping bag. Afterwards, we got in the car and drove downtown. The white snow turned grayer as we got to the city. Eventually, Grandma pulled up at a dark alley (胡同) and we got out of the car. The terrible smell of rotting garbage made me feel sick and pinch my nose shut. Grandma took my hand and led me to the street lamp. I could see the snow glowing in the light.
Grandma paused. “There’s usually somebody down this alley. It’s quiet and out of the wind--a good place to stay on cold nights. A nice warm quilt might make it even better.”
The dark engulfed Grandma and I as we stepped deep into the alley. The pavement was cracked and missing in spots. Chicken bones and stained boxes littered their way. And Grandma’s shoes made a loud sound with each step. Feeling frightened, I squeezed Grandma’s hand. Grandma squeezed my hand back. “It’s OK.” she smiled.
“Who’s there?” came a voice of a woman out of the darkness.

范文1:
Paragraph 1:“I have a nice warm quilt, if you want it.”said Grandma. After a while, a beam of light appeared and a woman walked out of the darkness. Grandma opened the shopping bag and pulled out the multicolored quilt. “That’s pretty and it looks warm.” The woman exclaimed and took the quilt, her eyes filled with tears of gratitude. As we walked back down the alley, I looked over my shoulder and saw the woman holding the quilt tightly to her face. “You’re right, Grandma. That is a beautiful quilt.” On our ride back home, the woman’s grateful words were still ringing in my ears.
Paragraph 2:Back home, I found a worn-out quilt by accident in a cupboard. I asked Grandma curiously, “Grandma, why is there a quilt?” After a moment of silence, Grandma began to share her own story. On a freezing night decades ago, as a poor young woman sleeping in the same alley, Grandma was offered a quilt, which warmed her up. She was determined to pass the love forward. That’s why Grandma sewed the old clothes together and made quilts for those in need. After hearing the story, I gave Grandma the biggest hug ever. I thought of all the clothes I didn’t want to wear anymore and knew what Grandma and I would do the next morning.
范文2:
Paragraph 1: “I have a nice warm quilt, if you want.” said Grandma. Soon came the sound of the footsteps in the darkness, louder and louder, towards us. About two meters ahead of us stood a short thin old woman in rags. “The quilt was really for me?” she asked in a low voice. “Sure!” Grandma opened the shopping bag and pulled out the “ugly” quilt. Looking at this unusual quilt, the woman swallowed hard, trying to hold back her tears of gratitude. “The pretty quilt comes just at the right time. Thank you!” she murmured. Just at the very moment, the ugly quilt suddenly became beautiful in my eyes, not only for Grandma’s heart full of love, but also for the physical and mental warmth brought to the woman and her family.
Paragraph 2:Back home, I found a worn-out quilt by accident in a cupboard. Curiously, I asked Grandma about the story behind. It immediately brought her memory back to that freezing day when her family lived in this same alley. At that time her poor family were struggling with severe winter days when a warm-hearted stranger offered a quilt and helped them survive the winter, which really warmed her heart. To do something in return for the kindness and pass it forward, Grandma decided to sew quilts to help people in need to the best of her ability. Looking at the satisfied smile spreading over Grandma’s wrinkled face, I knew I should do something: Dig out all those clothes I no longer need and sew quilts together with Grandma.

M: It’s the first.
W: How do you recommend that people develop their teaching skills? Is there a good resource for developing these skills?
M: The best resource is feedback from colleagues. I like listening to my colleagues for advice. Also, one should attend conferences in the field, read books about teaching and try out new things. I spend most of my leisure time reading.
W: So why did you become a teacher in the first place?
M: It’s because I really loved teaching. Though there is a huge amount of work for me every week, I enjoy my work.
W: So how long have you been teaching?
M: I’m thirty-eight now, which means I’ve been teaching for ten years.

M: Vatican Radio recently began its first regular news broadcast in Latin. The broadcast is the latest effort to expand the use of Latin. The weekly Vatican Radio news broadcast lasts five minutes. It will be followed by a 30-minute show with Latin conversation. The radio’s news team, as well as the Vatican’s Latin translation department, will produce the program. Italian businessman Luca Desiata published a new book of crossword puzzles in Latin and ancient Greek this month. This book is thought to be the first with no help or explanations in modern languages. Desiata said the Internet has helped renew interest in Latin as more and more schools around the world stop teaching it. He said we now have Wikipedia in Latin, and about 40 Latin Facebook groups around the world. Many attempts have been made to bring Latin back to popular use. Some have tried to introduce new words for things that did not exist at the time of the Roman Empire. In the 1990s, for example, top Vatican Latin researcher Carlo Egger came up with some words for common objects in the home. Maybe given time, the dead language will come back to life.
