An old English saying goes, “ Laughter is the best medicine." One person who certainly would have agreed with that is Norman Cousins.
Norman Cousins was the editor of a magazine called Saturday Review for almost forty years.
He also wrote and spoke about world peace and anti - nuclear and anti - war issues. And he traveled to many different countries to share his ideas.
In the 1960s, after returning to the United States from a busy and tiring trip to Europe, Mr. Cousins got sick. He discovered that he had a rare disease, known as ankylosing spondylitis, which caused the joint between his bones to stiff. In less than a week after he got sick, he could not stand. Every move that he made was painful. He was not able to sleep at night. The doctors told Mr. Cousins that they did not know how to cure his illness and that he might never get over it. Mr. Cousins, however, refused to stop hope.
Mr. Cousins thought that illness could be caused by unhappy thoughts. He did not want to take medicine to cure himself. Instead, he felt that happy thoughts or laughter might cure his illness. So he began to experiment on himself while still in that hospital by watching comedy shows on TV. Quickly Mr. Cousins found that ten minutes of real laughter during the day gave him two hours of pain - free sleep at night.
Deciding that the doctors could not help him, Mr. Cousins left the hospital and checked into a hotel room where he could continue his experiments with laughter. For eight days, Mr. Cousins rested in the hotel room watching comedy show on TV, reading amusing books, and sleeping whenever he felt tired. Within three weeks, he felt well enough to take a holiday to Puerto Rico where he began running on the beach for exercise.
After a few months, Mr. Cousins was able to carry on his work. He had laughed himself back to good health.
24. Why did Mr. Cousins travel over the world before he got sick?
A. To promote laughter therapy. B. To have sightseeing.
C. To share his ideas on peace. D. To advertise his magazine.
25. What did the doctor think of Mr. Cousins' disease?
A. Easily treatable. B. Deadly. C. Not serious. D. Incurable.
26. How did Mr. Cousins try to cure his illness?
A. Resting in bed. B. Taking medicine.
C. Doing physical exercise. D. Watching comedy shows.
27. What can we learn from Mr. Cousins , experience?
A. Never lose hopes.
B. Good health is priceless.
C. Laughter is a magic cure.
D. Never follow doctors' instructions.

When I first arrived in Terrassa, Spain, I was excited and nervous to start a new adventure in a country I love. The first few days seem so long ago now, trying to find a place to live, organising my timetable with the schools, meeting new people.
After a couple of weeks, the excitement started to fade, however, and homesickness started to set in. It wasn't a powerful homesickness but enough to make me spend more than a few nights thinking about family and friends back home, wondering if I should be there with them.
All that started to change after meeting some new friends and spending good time with them, practising languages, eating together and seeing new places as a group. I suppose we should never forget how important it is to have good friends in your life, because they can make such a difference.
Coming back to Terrassa after visiting home for Christmas felt like returning to a second home, to a place that was mine with people I cared about. Things got even busier and more people came into my life; new friends, romance and a whole lot of good food flowed by in what seems to have been weeks, not months.
Now, looking forward, there are some decisions to make. Should I return home to Scotland and move on with life there or try to extend my time here, perhaps make it something permanent? To travel and visit other places is one of the most fulfilling things you can do in life. Experiencing other cultures, learning about the world, it's such an important thing to do if you have the means.
My advice from my experience so far is to travel and try new things whenever you get the opportunity. You may find somewhere you were always supposed to be.
28. For what purpose did the writer go to Terrassa?
A. To settle there. B. To study there.
C. To have a holiday. D. To visit friends.
29. Which has the similar meaning as the underlined word fade in Paragraph 2?
A. die away B. increase C. deepen D. set off
30. What made the writer less homesick?
A. Making new friends. B. Learning a language.
C. Experiencing a new culture. D. Going back home during Christmas.
31. What might the writer do next?
A. To leave Terrassa. B. To travel and learn.
C. To extend his stay there. D. To go back to Scotland.

Meeting new people and making friends can be difficult. However, with a little effort and willingness to step outside of your comfort zone, you can easily make friends. 36 .
Make yourself available. If you want to make friends, you first need to put yourself out there somehow in order to meet people. 37 For example, if you' re still in school, sit somewhere with other people. It doesn't have to be a crowded table, but try to choose one with at least two other people.
Join an organization or club to meet new people. 38 You don't necessarily need to have a lot of common interests with people in order to make friends with them. Some of the most rewarding friendships are between two people who don't have much in common at all. However, if you like a specific topic, try searching for a location where you can meet people who share that interest.
Volunteer for a cause you care about. Volunteering is also a good way for people of all ages to meet others. 39 You may also meet others who have a passion for changing things the way you do things.
40 Chances are, you already know a few people who could possibly become good friends. Consider trying to get to know your co - workers, classmates, or even people in your social media network.

B. Try connecting with people you already know.
C. If you just sit alone, friends not likely come to you.

I was preparing lunch in the kitchen while my 2 - year - old son, Adam, was playing by himself at the front door. Suddenly, I heard him shouting, "Look, Mania! Doggie !" I put away what I was doing and stuck my head out of the door. Brandy, our next - door neighbor's 11 - year - old dog, was there again. I quickly ran out, shouting at her: ”Go away!”
Brandy's owner, an old woman, had died about a month before. Her family had emptied her
house and put up a "For Sale" sign in the front yard, but they had left old Brandy behind. Nowhere to go, for weeks, she'd been wandering around the neighborhood.
It wasn't that I disliked dogs or anything like that. I just didn't think about them very much. I had never kept a dog as a pet and had never thought to get one.
Brandy ran away and I stayed outside with Adam. Then the phone was ringing. I went inside to get the call. When I came back, Adam was gone. I searched the yard, front and back, then the basketball court and public pool. No trace of him. I was so nervous that I ran back home and called the police, then my husband.
We searched the neighborhood thoroughly. Suddenly I heard a dog barking in the distance. "It's coming from the woods," one of my neighbors said. We followed the barking to a wooded cliff(懸崖).There we found my son, and he was just inches away from the edges of the cliff, fast asleep. Brandy was beside him, leaning against him to keep him away from the edge. When I picked Adam up, Brandy sank down on the ground, breathing quickly. She must have been holding Adam there for hours!

附:聽(tīng)力原文
(Text 1)
M : What would you like, Linda? I think I'll have chips and ice cream.
W: The chocolate cake looks wonderful. But I'll have cheese cake for a change.
(Text 2)
W: You mean Jack has stopped smoking, Frank? That's amazing.
M : Yes, it's really amazing. He used to be a chain smoker, you know.
W : What about you? Have you thought about quitting smoking?
(Text 3)
W : Dad, the light is constantly flashing in my room.
M : Switch it off. I'11 try to find out what is wrong with it.
(Text 4)
M : I'm worn out this morning. I've been busy with my work at the office and now my shoulders are painful. I'm getting old.
W : Don't be silly. You just need a rest.
(Text 5)
W : I've been reading a fascinating book about life in the old West. It is beautifully illustrated with pictures.
M : I wonder if it's the same one I read last month.
(Text 6)
M : When are you going to take your vacation?
W: I was planning to take it at the end of this month. We are planning to travel to Australia this time. Why? Has something come up?
M : Well, would it be too inconvenient for you to wait until next month?
W : Hmm ... not really. I guess I can put it off until next month, but I've got to talk about it with my husband.
M : Thank you very much for changing your plans.
(Text 7)
M : Hello.
W : Oh, is that Mike speaking?
M : Er no. This is Samuel Lee.
W : Oh, hi ! This is Helen. Is Mike around?
M : Just a minute, I'll check. Um ... no, he isn't in. Can I help you?
W : Yes. Can I leave a message with you? There's been a mix - up about the data for his research project. And I'd like him to get in touch so that it can be cleared up. He can reach me at this number till tomorrow evening. It's 67311011.
M : OK. I'll give him the message.
(Text 8)
W: Hi, Dave. Long time no see! How have you been?
M : I'm doing okay, but school has been really busy these days, and I haven't had time to relax.
W: By the way, what's your major?
M : Hotel management.
W : What do you want to do once you graduate?
M : Uh . . . I haven't decided for sure, but I think I'd like to work for a hotel. How about you ?
W: Well, when I first started college, I wanted to major in French, but I realised I might have a hard time finding a job using the language, so I changed my major to computer science.
M : Do you have a part - time job to support yourself through school? Or do your parents help you?
W : Well, luckily for me, I've got a four - year scholarship. How about you?
M : I work three times a week at a cafe near the campus.
(Text 9)
W: Good morning. Can I help you?
M : Yeah, I'd like to find a nice neighbourhood around here.
W: Well, I will recommend Castle Hill to you. It is the most popular one.
M : Why's that neighbourhood so popular?
W: Well, there's a big plan to improve the district, and it'll soon have the best facilities for miles around. There's a big sports centre under construction, which will be very impressive when it's finished.
M : What about cinemas? Are there any in the area?
W : The only one closed down last year, and it's now in the process of being changed into a film museum. The local people are trying to get a new cinema.
M : I think I heard something about a plan to replace the existing concert hall with a larger one.
W: Ah, that's due to start next year.
M : Well, it sounds an interesting area to live in. Could I go and see the house, please?
W: Yes, of course.
(Text 10)
W : Good morning, welcome to the language centre of our university. We aim at helping people improve their language ability in several languages. Now I'll focus on one of our programmes - the English training programme, which I think you might be interested in. The programme offers year - round English courses in eight levels from beginning to advanced. It offers a wide variety of courses for students and professionals. They can prepare for study at an American university and improve their language skills and knowledge of US culture needed for their jobs. The strength of the programme is its ability to offer courses that are specially designed to meet any student's specific needs and goals. More students in this programme study full - time which is made up of twenty hours a week. On the first day of the programme, you take a test to determine your level. At the end of each seven - week period, your language skills are tested. And if you've made enough progress, you're promoted to the next level. In addition, you can enter the Language Centre Project, which will allow you to have extra English hours with a native speaker. For more practice chances, there are also several social activities and field trips organised by the Students Centre.
