In 1991, Keith White was at the centre of a 14-vehicle pile-up when a truck crossed the central reservation and hit the van in which he was a passenger. White survived, but his left arm was crushed beyond repair, and he lost his memory for two years.
His pilot license was removed and he could no longer follow his passion for diving. But he had been sailing since he was 16, and so, in 2004, he decided to buy a boat, fitting it out so he could sail it single-handedly. “I didn’t know at that point if I could sail with one hand,” he says. “But at the back of my mind I had always thought I could do anything if I put my mind to it.”
Within a year, White had taken on the challenge of being the first one-armed sailor to circumnavigate (環(huán)航) the British Isles. Then he crossed the Atlantic alone in 2008. Last year he became the first sailor with a disability to circumnavigate the globe.
Sailing single-handed for weeks requires mental, as well as physical, strength, especially when you are alone. So how does he do it? It’s a question that makes the yachtsman (帆船運動員) laugh. “When you have seven children it’s lovely to have a little time on your own! It’s awesome,” he jokes. “I do a log every hour, and my diary, and I read a few books. I have very little sleep.” “I’m a sociable person: I do like lots of people around. Answering emails and chatting over Facebook can help stop any loneliness,” he adds.
When White made his first Atlantic crossing, he was disappointed to have his peace and quiet broken by his arrival on land. But, he says, he threw himself into meeting new people. In between adventures, he likes sailing with people who haven’t tried it before or get involved in yacht races with friends. Perhaps the main reason for his success in adjusting to life after a big adventure, he says, is that he always has an idea for a new one in his back pocket. “It keeps me ticking over — there’s always something new to do. I just like challenges and one leads to another.”
1. Why couldn’t White continue his passion for diving?
A. He lost his left arm. B. His license was due.
C. He had a new hobby. D. His memory was poor.
2. How did White spend his time at sea?
A. By staying awake. B. By visiting old friends.
C. By keeping himself busy. D. By attending his children.
3. What mainly leads to White’s successful adjustment to life after a big adventure?
A. Socializing with new people. B. Scheduling new adventures.
C. Coaching new yachtsmen. D. Organizing yacht races.
4. Which of the following best describes Keith White?
A. Creative. B. Humorous. C. Easy-going. D. Adventurous.

Someone once said, ‘the poorest man on earth is not the man without money, but the men without a dream.’ This implies that the totality of a man’s life is rooted in dreams.
I have never seen a successful man without a dream; in fact, for plans to cone to being it must first be imagined as a dream. Bringing one’s dream to realization is one of the most powerful things anyone can do to be successful in life. However , we need to understand that to life there are designs and rules that cannot be broken or replaced; for instance, food has no substitute in our lives. Why? It is because we need food for energy to do work and growth.
Also, having dream is vital in making the most of our adventure in life. Have you ever wondered why each time success is discussed some names such as Bill Gate, Martin Luther King, Thomas Edison, Barrack Obana and others come to our minds?
We need to understand that all these men at one point in their lives had dreams, which they put into plans Greatness is never achieved in a day; it first starts in the mind like a dream, before the carrier puts it into plans. Dream is the starting point of success. it is the beginning of any creation. Life without a dream is doomed to failure. Where there is no dream, there is no hope. Without a dream, one’s future is uncertain.
When then is dream? It can be described as the mental picture of a desired future. I believe there are two worlds; the physical world we can see and relate with, and the world that exists in the mind(imagined world). Concrete items existed first in imagined world before birthed in form of invention or otherwise. Everything that exists today, was created twice. First in the mind and then processed into real or seen world.
Dream is, therefore, the currency and power of hope. Our dreams are much more important than our present circumstances, because they enable us to have ideas about the future.
9. What is the function of the first paragraph?
A. To give an example. B. To describe a dream.
C. To lead to the main topic. D. To attract reader’ attention.
10. Why does the author take the food for example?
A. It brings 1s energy to grow. B. It takes the place of a dream.
C. It helps us to live a successful life. D. It has the same function as a dream.
11. Why does the anther mention these successful people like Bill Gate in paragraph three?
A. They succeeded in business. B. They had their own dreams.
C. They set a good example to us. D. They liked adventuring in life.
12. What is the best title for the text?
A. I Have a Dream! B. No Dream, No Hope!
C. A Dream in Life Is Important! D. Success Starts with a Dream!
根據(jù)第一段中“This implies that the totality of a man’s life is rooted in dreams. (這意味著一個人的全部生活都植根于夢想。)”根據(jù)第二段“I have never seen a successful man without a dream; in fact, for plans to cone to being it must first be imagined as a dream. Bringing one’s dream to realization is one of the most powerful things anyone can do to be successful in life.”
根據(jù)第二段中“However, we need to understand that to life there are designs and rules that cannot be broken or replaced; for instance, food has no substitute in our lives. Why? It is because we need food for energy to do work and growth. (但是,我們需要明白,對于生命來說,有一些設計和規(guī)則是不能被打破和替代的,比如,食物在我們的生活中是不可替代的。為什么?這是因為我們需要食物作為能量來工作和成長。)”可知,作者以食物為例,因為它和夢想有同樣重要的作用。故選D項。
11. 推理判斷題。根據(jù)第四段中“We need to understand that all these men at one point in their lives had dreams, which they put into plans Greatness is never achieved in a day;(我們要明白,所有這些人在他們生命中的某個時刻都有夢想,并把夢想付諸計劃;)”可知,作者在第三段提到了像比爾·蓋茨這樣的成功人士是想說明這些成功人士他們有自己的夢想。故選B項。
根據(jù)第一段中“Someone once said, ‘the poorest man on earth is not the man without money, but the men without a dream.’ This implies that the totality of a man's life is rooted in dreams.(有人曾經(jīng)說過:“世界上最貧窮的人不是沒有錢的人,而是沒有夢想的人?!边@意味著一個人的全部生活都植根于夢想。)”以及最后一段中“Dream is, therefore, the currency and power of hope. Our dreams are much more important than our present circumstances, because they enable us to have ideas about the future.(因此,夢想是希望的貨幣和力量。我們的夢想比我們現(xiàn)在所處的環(huán)境重要得多,因為它們使我們能夠對未來有想法。)”可知,本文主要講述了擁有夢想對人生的重要性,因此本文的最佳標題是選項C“夢想很重要!”故選C項。
二、七選五
Americans are proud of their variety and individuality (個性), yet they love and respect few things more than a uniform, whether it is the uniform of a lift operator or the uniform of a five-star general(將軍). ___13___ Among the arguments for uniforms, one of the first is that in the eyes of most people they look more professional than civilian (百姓的) clothes. People expect higher quality from a man who wears a uniform. ___14___ Faith in the skill of a garage mechanic is increased by a uniform. What easier way is there for a nurse, a policeman, a hairdresser, or a waiter to lose professional identity (職業(yè)身份) than to step out of uniform?
___15___ They are often more comfortable and more lasting than civilian clothes.
Among the arguments against uniforms is their lack of variety and the loss of individuality experienced by people who must wear them. Though there are many types of uniforms, the wearer of any particular type is generally stuck with it, without change, until retirement. ___16___ ___17___ Though they are long-lasting, often their initial(最初的) expense is greater than the cost of civilian clothes. Some uniforms are also expensive to maintain, requiring professional dry cleaning rather than the home laundering possible with many types of civilian clothes.
A. Americans think highly of uniforms.
B. Why are uniforms so popular in the United States?
C. When people wear the same uniforms, they are likely to think, speak, and act similarly on the job at least.
D. Uniforms also have many practical good points.
E. Some practical problems with uniforms arise.
F. The television repairman who wears a uniform is likely to inspire more trust than one who appears in civilian clothes.
G. People's identity can be recognized more easily by their uniforms
13. 由下文“Among the arguments for uniforms, one of the first is that in the eyes of most people they look more professional than civilian (百姓的) clothes”可知,首先,在大多數(shù)人眼里,他們看起來比平民服裝更專業(yè)。
14. 由上文“People expect higher quality from a man who wears a uniform”可知,人們對穿制服的人有更高的要求。
15. 由下文“They are often more comfortable and more lasting than civilian clothes.”
16. 由上文“Among the arguments against uniforms is their lack of variety and the loss of individuality experienced by people who must wear them.”
17. 由下文“Though they are long-lasting, often their initial(最初的)expense is greater than the cost of civilian clothes. Some uniforms are also expensive to maintain, requiring professional dry cleaning rather than the home laundering possible with many types of civilian clothes”可知,雖然它們經(jīng)久耐用,但最初的花費往往大于便服的花費,有些制服的維護費用也很高,需要專業(yè)的干洗,而不能在家自己清洗。

A wealthy man and his son liked to collect rare works of art. They had everything in their collection, from Picasso to Raphael. They would often sit together and admire these great works of art.
When the Vietnam conflict broke out, the son went to war. Unfortunately he died in battle while rescuing another soldier. The father was in deep sorrow for his only son.
About a month later, just before Christmas, there was a knock at the door. A young man stood at the door with a large package in his hands. He said, “Sir, you don't know me. I am the soldier for whom your son gave his life.” “He saved many lives that day, and he was carrying me to safety when a bullet struck him in the heart and killed him instantly.” “He often talked about you and your love of art.” The young man held out that package. “I know this isn’t much.” “I’m not a great artist, but I think your son would have wanted you to have this.”
The father opened the package. It was a picture of his son, painted by the young man. He stared in surprise at the way the soldier captured the personality of his son in the painting. The father was so drawn to the eyes that tears welled up in his own eyes. He thanked the young man and offered to pay for the painting. “Oh, no, sir, I could never repay what your son did for me. It’s a gift.”
The father hung the picture on the wall. Every time visitors came to his home he took them to see the portrait of his son before he showed them any of the other great works he had collected.
The man died a few years later. There was to be a great auction(拍賣) of his art collection. Many influential people gathered, excited over seeing the great paintings and having the opportunity to purchase one for their collection.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
On the platform sat the painting of the son. The auctioneer banged his hammer. “We will start the bidding with the picture of the son. Who will bid for this painting?” There was silence. Then a voice in the back of the room angrily shouted, “We didn’t come to see this picture. We want to see his great works of art.” But the auctioneer continued. “Will somebody bid for this painting? Who will take the son?”
Finally a voice came from the back of the room. “I’ll give $10.00 for the painting.” It was the gardener of the father and his son. Being a poor man, it was all he could afford. “We have $10, who will bid $20?” No response. “Going once, twice, sold for $10!” “Now the auction is over!” The auctioneer laid down his hammer and explained, “When I was called to conduct this auction, I was told that only the painting of the son would be auctioned. And whoever purchased the picture of the son would receive all the father’s possessions, including the paintings.”
