When my family moved to America from a small village in Guangdong, China, we brought not only our luggage, but also our village rules, customs and culture. One of the rules is that young people should always respect elders. Unluckily, this rule led to my very first embarrassment in the United States.
I had a part - time job as a waiter in a Chinese restaurant. One time, when I was serving food to a middle - aged couple, the wife asked me how the food could be served so quickly. I told her that I had made sure they got their food quickly because I always respect the elderly. As soon as I said that, her face showed great displeasure. My manager, who happened to hear what I said, took me aside and gave me a long lecture about how sensitive Americans are and how they dislike the description “old”. I then walked back to the table and apologized to the wife. After the couple heard my reason, they understood that the problem was caused by cultural differences, so they laughed and were no longer angry.
In my village in China, people are proud of being old. Not so many people live to be seventy or eighty, and people who reach such an age have the most knowledge and experience. Young people always respect older people because they know they can learn from their rich experience.
However, in the United States, people think “growing old” is a problem since“old” shows that a person is going to retire or that the body is not working well. Here many people try to keep themselves a-way from growing old by doing exercises or jogging, and women put on makeup, hoping to look young. When I told the couple in the restaurant that I respect the elderly, they got angry because this caused them to feel they had failed to stay young. I had told them something they didn’t want to hear.
After that, I changed the way I had been with older people. It is not that I don’t respect them any more. I still respect them, but now I don’t show my feelings through words.
( )24. The author brought the couple their food very fast because ______.
A. the manager asked him to do so B. the couple wanted him to do so
C. he respected the elderly D. he wanted more pay
( )25. When the author called the couple “elderly”,they became
A. nervous B. unhappy C. satisfied D. excited
( )26. After this experience,the author ______.
A. changed his way with older people B. made friends with the couple
C. no longer respected the elderly D. lost his job in the restaurant
( )27. Which of the following is TRUE?
A. The more the author explained, the angrier the couple got.
B. The author wanted to show his feelings through words after his experience.
C. From this experience the author learned more about American culture.
D. The manager went back to the table and apologized to the couple.

One day I got in a taxi, and we left for the airport. We were driving in the right lane when sudden-ly,a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver stopped his car at once. The tire made a very loud noise, and at the very last moment our car stopped just one inch from the back of the other car.
I was frightened. But then I couldn’t believe what happened next. The driver of the other car, the guy who almost caused a big accident, turned his head and started yelling at us. I couldn’t believe it! But my taxi driver just smiled at the guy. So I asked,“Why did you just do that? This guy almost sent us to hospital.”
This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, “The Law of the Rubbish Truck.” He ex-plained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of rubbish, full of anger. As their rubbish piles up, they look for a place to throw it away and sometimes they’ll throw it at you. Don’t take it personally. Just smile, wish them well, and move on. Don’t take their rubbish and spread it to other people at work, at home or on the streets.
Successful people never let rubbish trucks change their moods. Life is too short to wake up in the. morning with regrets, so love those who love you and pray for those who don’t.
( )28. Which of the following is NOT true according to the first paragraph?
A. The writer went to the airport by taxi that day.
B. The taxi driver stopped his car in time.
C. The black car jumped out and crashed into the taxi.
D. A car accident nearly happened on the writer’s way to the airport.
( )29. The underlined word ‘yelling’ in the second paragraph means ______ in Chinese.
A.道歉 B.傻笑 C.吼叫 D.告別
( )30. From the passage, we can tell that the taxi driver is ______.
A. silly and dishonest B. wise and friendly
C. helpful but nervous D. modest but impatient
( )31. What does the passage mainly tell us?
A. Fight with people like rubbish trucks.
B. Make friends with people like rubbish trucks.
C. Have a quarrel with people like rubbish trucks.
D. Don’t let rubbish trucks change our moods.

Cars could be able to“talk”to each other to warn about dangers on the roads using 5G technology in future, according to researchers.
Researchers at Glasgow Caledonian University ( GCU) believe 5G may enable driverless cars to send each other messages about dangers such as ice or deep holes.
And they believe the high - speed, low - delay (低延遲的) nature of 5G will improve driverless .cars to the point where they will be safer than the cars being driven today. They predict the number of road traffic accidents which cause more than 1. 3 million deaths and up to 50 million people injured worldwide every year will drop greatly as a result.
Dr. Douglas, a member of the research group, said, “To have a better idea of what the future will look like, think of having cars that not only use sensors ( 感應器) to find what’s around them, but also can talk to each other about safety information nearby.”
“I’m sure anyone who has had a bad experience on frozen roads would have benefited from knowing about the dangerous conditions ahead of time so they could have changed their speed or, if possible, even avoided that route altogether.
With the help of 5G, an early warning system in vehicles will come into use within the next few years. Cars that are close enough to the danger area will pass warning messages to other cars around them using communication technologies, but also to cars further away using 5G, fast and reliably. Then those cars will send the same information to cars near them and so on, forming a joined - up.
5G is an exciting mobile technology, which will give a great boost to smart cities and autonomous ve-hicles among many other things.
( )32. Which of the following will Dr. Douglas agree?
A. Cars can talk with drivers using 5G.
B.5G will improve the safety of car driving.
C. Massages sent by 5G will never be delayed.
D. Over 1.3 million deaths are caused by driveless cars.
( )33. What will cars probably do with dangerous conditions with 5G EXCEPT ______.
A. changing their speed B. turning to another route
C. getting closer to the danger area D. sending warnings to nearby cars
( )34. What does the underlined word “boost” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Recovery. B. Push. C. Danger. D. Fame.
( )35. In which part of a newspaper is the passage probably found?
A. Science and Technology. B. Entertainment.
C. Life. D. Transport.
