Self-satisfactin -- A Deadly Cmpetitr
I am Peggy Fleming, a cach in the figure-skating team. I remember I suffered a seriusfailure when I was nly 10 years ld and the 13 helped me winthe Olympic ice-skating champinship(冠軍)It .a(chǎn)ls gave me a deadly cmpetitr —th e ther Peggy Fleming.
Just befre that, I had been rller-skating, playing basketball, and culd climb up a tree as well as any by. S Dad 14 me t take skating lessns. And sn I wn several lcal figure- skating prizes. Then came the Pacific Cast Champinship in Ls Angeles.
I, a very 15 yung girl, prud f the praise frm friends and newspapers, walked int the gym expecting t add anther great hnr t my recent success. Outn the ice, I ttally enjyed myself, flying thrugh all kinds f figures I knew s well. But when the results were reprted, I was shcked — u t f the 12 cmpetitrs I had fmished last! The lessn burned as bright as my skate knives: "Yu didn't skate yur best!" I knew that nly ne persn
had 16 me that day —mysel f, my wn self-satisfactin.
The rules f figure-skating are: There are 69 figures in all. A skater must d five figures fr the Olympics, but yu aren't tld which figures these will be until the last minute. S yu must be very familiar with the 69 figures. When I 17 every time, I wuld practice the same 69 figures ver and ver, eight hurs a day. Often in the middle f practicing a figure, the
ther Peggy Fleming wuld say in a lw vice, "Gd enugh — why frce yurself s 18 ?" At this time, I remembered the lessn in Ls Angeles.
Nw I skate prfessinally — teach teenagers hw t skate. But I still 19 this cmpetitr, myself. I surely believe that each f us has a special talent. And if we lck ur talent because f ur wn self-satisfactin, simply d nt want t make 20 r fear trying, we will fail.

The Sleepver Prgram
Sending stuffed animals fr a sleepver at the library encurages children t read with them, say researchers in a new study in Heliyn. Fr the first time, the study prves stuffed animal sleepvers are an effective way t get children t read.Stuffed animal sleepver prgrams are designed t get children interested in picture bks. Children take their tys t a library fr the night, where the animals search fr bks they want t read. At this pint, wrkers and vlunteers take phts f the animals traveling arund the library t learn abut it and reading tgether. The next day, the children cllect their stuffed animals and the phts f what they did during the night. They're als given the bks their animals chse t read.
The team rganized a stuffed animal sleepver prgram fr 42 preschl children. "Wewanted t knw if there really was an effect, and if s, hw lng it lasts," said lead authr Dr. Yshihir Okazaki f Okayama University. They fund befre the sleepver, the children did nt spend time lking at the bks in their play area at preschl. Immediately after the sleepver, the number f children wh read t the stuffed animals was significantly(明顯地)higher than the number wh did nt.
"Surprisingly, nt nly did the children shw interest in the picture bks, but they als began t read t their stuffed animals. This means that a new behavir appeared that the children had nt shwn befre; we did nt expect anything like this." When parents read t their children, it isn't an active frm f reading fr the child. But when children read t their stuffed animals, it is a mre spntaneus(自發(fā)的),s el f-dire cte d frm f reading, helping them develp int mre active readers.
Hwever, the effect had wrn ff after three days. The researchers als tested a methd fr cntin 血g the effect: they reminded the children f the sleepver a mnth later, by hiding the stuffed animals and shwing them the phts again the next day. This simple methd led t a significant increase in the number f children reading t their stuffed animals.

D
If we cmpare active listening with passive listening, is ne better than the ther? As we will fmd ne is better than the ther fr many situatins but nt necessarily all. Many peple think that listening is a passive business. It is just the ppsite. Listening well is an active exercise f ur attentin and hard wrk. It is because they d nt realize this, r because they are nt willing t d the wrk, that mst peple d nt listen well.
Listening well als requires peple pay all their attentin t smene else. A necessary part f listening well is the rule knwn as'bracketing'. Bracketing includes the giving up r setting aside f yur wn prejudices(偏見)and strng wishes, t experience as far as pssible smene else's wrld frm the inside, stepping int his r her shes. That means if yu want t listen well yu shuld have a shrt acceptance f the ther persn. Sensing this acceptance, the speaker will seem quite willing t pen up the inner part f his r her mind t the listener. True cmmunicatin is under way and the energy required fr listening well is s great that it can be cmpleted nly by the will t imprve neself fr the grwth f each ther.
Mst f the time, we lack this energy. Even thugh we may feel in ur business dealings r scial relatinships that we are listening well, what we are usually ding is listening selectively. Often we have a prepared list in mind and wnder, as we listen, hw we can achieve certain expected results t get the cnversatin ver as quickly as pssible r redirected in ways mre satisfactry t us. Many f us are far mre interested in talking than in listening, r we simply refuse t listen t what we dn't want t hear.
It wasn't until tward the end f my dctr career that I have fund the knwledge that ne is being truly listened t is always therapeutic(有療效的)I.n abut a quarter f the patients I saw, surprising imprvement was shwn during the frrst few mnths f psychtherapy(心理療 1 去),b efr e any f the causes f prblems had been uncvered r
explained. There are severalreasns fr this experience, but the mst imprtant amng them, I believe, was the patient's sense that he r she was being truly listened t, ften fr the first time in years, and fr sme, perhaps fr the first time ever.
Why d many peple listen passively?
Because listening passively is better than listening actively.
Because they like t pay attentin t what they are talking.
Because they are nt willing t speak t thers patiently.
Because they dn't want t care what they are listening.
The wrd "temprary" in Paragraph 2 prbably means " ".
A.happening immediatelyC.having n reasns
B.lasting fr a shrt timeD.trying yur best 32.The writer prbably agrees that .
peple always listened actively t make wrk easily
peple ften listen purpsefully in cmmunicatin
peple like t set aside their prejudices t listen well
peple are willing t pen up their mind while listening 33.What can we learn frm this passage?
The dctr realized that patients needed t be truly listened.
The patients culd be better sn if they were taken gd care f.
True cmmunicatin needs speakers t accept ther persn's ideas.
Mst peple d nt listen well because listening is a passive prcess.
