When yu watch TV prgrams abut wild animals, it is surprising t see hw an antelpe (羚羊) can run away frm a strng lin. In the wilderness, everyne has his wn way t prtect himself. Even plants have their wn ways t fight ff enemies.
Over millins f years, plants have develped their wn defense system (防衛(wèi)系統(tǒng)). Chemicals are fantastically used by plants t survive (幸存). By making their leaves, flwers, rts and fruits pisnus (有毒的) t enemies, plants can fight back.
One such plant is the Glden Wattle tree. The British scientist David Camern has fund when an animal eats the tree’s leaves, the amunt (數(shù)量) f pisn increases in the ther leaves. “It’s like the injured leaves telephning the thers t fight tgether against the enemy,” he said.
The tree als sends defense messages t neighbring plants by giving ut a special smell. Glden Wattle trees in the nearby 45 meters will get the message and prduce mre pisn within 10 minutes. Nw, if an enemy eats t many f the trees’ leaves, he will die.
Every kind f plant r tree is gd at prducing a special set f chemicals. Herbivres, like rabbits, can safely eat the leaves f ne tree, but they may be pisned by its neighbr.
In this way, plants have nt nly develped their wn defense system, but als shared it with thers. This makes it impssible fr a single animal t destry even a small area f frest.
