Luckily, the police arrived 10 minutes later and found the bag in one of these restrooms. So be calm and leave in a quiet and orderly way.

A completely electric plane has made its longest flight ever at just under 15 minutes. The plane is a collaboration (合作成果) between a Seattle engineering firm named MagniX and a nearby Vancouver air charter company named Harbour Air.
Harbour Air offers services you might describe as an air taxi--it ferries people to places-just outside of Vancouver, where many people live on and visit islands, resorts, and more that are accessible by boat or air ferry. The company also flies back and forth to Seattle. These short frequent trips make Harbour an ideal candidate for an electric fleet.
MagniX chief Roei Ganzarski says the plane it tested for this flight could fly up to 100 miles. Like early electric cars, this limitation prevents people going longer distances, but works for many who are just going short distances-especially suited for the corridor between Seattle and Vancouver, where many people work and play in both places. Where the airline industry in general is drawing constant criticism for how much carbon it produces, an electric fleet of local charters is very appealing.
The airplane flown in the test is old: a 1957 de Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver made right in Canada. These planes have remained so popular for so many decades that another manufacturer purchased the rights to continue to make new replacement parts.
Because of the high durability (持久耐用)and easy repair of the DHC-2 Beaver, Harbour Air hopes to turn all of its similar planes electric as well, resulting in a fully electric feet (機隊) that’s still made of the most hardy and field tested civilian aircraft around. Harbour Air's founder Greg McDougall says the fuel and repair savings alone make an electric fleet worth investing in.
The DHC-2 Beaver was designed as a short takeoff and landing (STOL) airplane, and now it's been retrofitted (改型) with an electric engine. Harbour's website lists the horse-power of the new DHC-2 Beavers as 450 HP, which is the same as the original engine.
Harbour Air says it’s already carbon neutral, flying 500, 000 people per year on over 40 airplanes. If the company s entire map of 12 destinations is within the 100-mile threshold (門檻), founder McDougall is right that it makes undeniable sense to electrify. The next step for Harbour and MagniX’s Magni500 electric power-train is to go through a long period of tests and other paperwork and government safety rules.
Harbour and MagniX expect this will take at least a couple of years, after which they can hopefully upgrade their entire fleet. The MagniX power-train comes in 375 and 750 HP versions, so Harbour's larger planes are covered, too. In a time when elites are booking long flights to nowhere to boost their airline miles status, Harbour Air and MagniX's planned electric fleet is a breath of fresh, unpolluted air.
58. The electric plane is developing in Harbour Air probably because .
A. places around are most seriously polluted
B. the airlines possesses advanced technology
C. Vancouver government pushes ahead with the project
D. people around are in need of such a short distance vehicle
【題源】https://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/infrastructure/a30212114/first-all-electric-plane-flies/
【答案】D
【解析】定位到文章第二段可知,Harbour Air提供的服務(wù)類似于空中的士,“it ferries people just…air ferry.”以及本段最后一句“these short, frequent trips make Harbour an ideal candidate for an electric fleet”故Harbour主要是靠提供短程的接送服務(wù)而聞名的,故選D。
59. The most remarkable highlight of the electric plane should be its .
A. zero emission of carbon dioxide
B. never being in need of repair
C. easy being retrofitted from traditional planes
D. even stronger horsepower than traditional planes
【答案】A

60. What does "this" in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Finishing the replacement of old planes' engines.
B. People's being gradually used to electric planes.
C. The cooperation of the MagniX and Harbour Air.
D. The period of testing and drafting safety rules.
【答案】D
【解析】定位到this 前面的一段末句(倒數(shù)第二段),“the next step for …is to go through a long period of tests and other paperwork and government safety rules”可知Harbour和MagniX 下面要通過的是長時間的測試和書面工作以及政府安全條款,故選D項。

As we recently reported, IBM has promised $ 5 million in prizes to anyone who can turn artificial intelligence into tools that could solve some of the biggest problems in the world, like climate change or world hunger- certainly ambitious projects. But as the push for AI increases, many are warning that it could be more dangerous than nuclear weapons if not developed carefully.
The competition would involve independent developers building apps using the Watson AI system-the same computer famous for its Jeopardy appearances-and the competition would seek to make new breakthroughs by 2020, according to a Computer World report. The con-tests were announced at a TED conference in Vancouver recently, thanks to a partnership between XPrize and IBM. The winners would be announced in 2020, with three teams splitting$ 4.5 million and the remaining $0. 5 million going to other projects.
But this push for the rapid development of AI has some concerned, including Professor Stuart Russell, a computer scientist at the University of California in Berkeley and the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk at Cambridge University who is known for his work on AI, according to the Daily Mail report. He believes that mankind may be driving off a cliff by doing this.
“The problem with AI is that it could be easily adapted for military use, and thus intelligent computers could be in charge of some terrifying weaponry. Too much trust in AI could lead to problems down the road,” Russell warned.
And he's not the only one. SpaceX and Tesla founder Elon Musk and famed physicist Professor Stephen Hawking have also spoken out about the issue.
Tesla and SpaceX boss Elon Musk has doubled down on his warnings about the danger of artificial intelligence. The billionaire tech entrepreneur called AI more dangerous than nuclear warheads and said there needs to be a regular body overseeing the development of super intelligence. “The biggest issue I see with so-called AI experts is that they think they know more than they do, and they think they are smarter than they actually are, ”said Musk. “This tends to torture smart people. They define themselves by their intelligence and they don't like the idea that a machine could be way smarter than them, so they discount the idea which is fundamentally harmful.”
Based on his knowledge of machine intelligence and its developments, Musk believes there is reason to be worried.
“And the movement for AI began in a similar fashion as the push for nuclear technology, ” Russell noted. The primary interest in nuclear technology at first was its ability to supply an enormous amount of energy. Soon, however, mankind used it for weapons——which is why it's important for mankind to be alarmed when it comes to AI.
61. What does “the competition" in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Applying AI to solving climate change or world hunger.
B. Making huge sums of money from AI.
C. Investing more money in developing AI.
D. The cooperation between X Prize and IBM.

When Jessa was five years old her parents were killed in a car accident. Her life had changed forever. Jessa was told that they were unable to find any relatives to take her. The next thing she remembered was packing her clothes and being hurried to the local orphanage.
Friends were hard to make and keep at the orphanage because once you would make a friend, they would be placed in a foster (領(lǐng)養(yǎng)) home. Jessa would watch her friends get into the car and drive away. Some of them would return but always seemed so different to her. Some had been beaten while others had been starved and some came back because the family had had a baby. Jessa never gave much thought to being adopted until one day the social worker came and took her to the main office to meet a family. Jessa was told they wanted to foster her.
Reluctantly Jessa left her comfort zone and headed out to her new home with Mr. and Mrs. Johnson. She loved her new home and they were the nicest people she had ever met. They would play for hours and at night they both would read her a bedtime story. Every morning she would wake to the smell of pancakes, eggs and bacon. Then Mr. Johnson would come in and say,“Wakey wakey eggs and bacy. ”It always made Jessa laugh to hear him say that. They always had meals together like a real family.
One night after dinner they told Jessa they wanted to adopt her and that they would get all the paperwork done the following week. Jessa was ecstatic (狂喜). She was finally going to have a real family. That weekend Mrs. Johnson went to see her sister and tell her the good news and Mr. Johnson and Jessa stayed behind to go to the zoo. Upon their return, Mr. Johnson received a phone call, saying his wife had been in an accident and didn't make it. He decided it would be better if he sent Jessa back to the orphanage.
Jessa's heart was broken when Mr. Johnson told her she would be going back. Eyes filled with tears, Jessa climbed the stairs to her room to pack. Her little heart had been shattered for the second time in her short life. Jessa dressed for bed wondering if Mr. Johnson was going to read her tonight. After waiting for almost an hour, she gave up on that thought and climbed into bed. Jessa lay awake and turned for hours before she finally fell asleep.
The next morning she woke up, got dressed and headed down stairs, hoping Mr. Johnson had changed his mind and wanted to keep her. When she stepped into the kitchen she knew he hadn't, for the bags she had packed the night before were sitting by the door. Mr. Johnson opened the door and there stood a social worker to take her back. Her little head hung low as she picked up her bags and walked out the door never to see sweet Mr. Johnson again. She climbed into the social workers' car. Jessa just hung her little head and let tears roll down her cheeks, but she quickly wiped away.
By the time they made it to the orphanage, Jessa had promised herself that she would never let her heart be broken like that again, she would never become attached to anyone ever again. The days at the orphanage were long and dreary especially for Jessa. She had no friends and made no attempt to make any. She had been called in twice to speak to the counselor about why she chose to stay to herself and she always told them the same thing- it was easier for her that way. If you didn't get attached to anyone it wouldn't hurt when they left.
65. The primary factor contributing to Jessa's being reduced to orphanage life was that .
A. she herself was a Jonah
B. no relatives would take her home
C. the babysitter was absent
D. she lost parents to a terrible accident

The Art of Chinese Calligraphy
Chinese calligraphy is the word's most favorable form of art. When 1 was a preschooler, I was briefly taught by my grandfather to write Chinese calligraphy. Even though everything has gradually been only a blur (模糊) in my memory over the years, one thing I certainly have not lost is that I can still grip the ink brush correctly.
Imagine that someone obtains such a cherished occasion to sit down and spend a little unaccompanied time of quietness, allowing one's intellect to think freely and express out in a written script their deepest thoughts.
A piece of xuan paper is first carefully placed on top of a desk pad. Then, use a paper- weight to hold down the xuan paper, so it will be always locked in the right spot. Next without any hesitation, reach for the best ink brush. Do remember to immerse (浸潤) the brush with just enough ink so there won't be any ink dripping. Then start to write. While the mind unfolds, the brush sheer per stokes of Chinese character into the rhythmic motion of expressions.
In history, Chinese calligraphers have always written the script as a common way for message transmission during various audience engagements of contributors. It also makes for better cultural understanding of a different period of Chinese history. Chinese calligraphers have a variety of reasons to study the art form. For some people, practicing writing the regular script will keep the traditional culture alive. Others think it a perfect way to relax from all the daily happenings. There's still an uncountable new form of script style that has kept the art going in a way to promote the fine art of Chinese culture in our present day.
Nowadays, Chinese calligraphers strongly believe there's more than just written communication. Countless existing works display Chinese literature. They understand what it meant to become an accomplished Chinese calligrapher. It takes many years of strictly copying from the master's correct written stokes, to gain the skill in the regular script until exemplary, perfect and beyond expert level. One requirement is to know the writing structures of several Chinese script styles.
The new approach to script writing is gaining ground, especially in western countries. Inspiring Chinese calligraphers who are willing to perfect the craft tend to create new ideas to re-present the visible images. The contemporary bending of color hypothesis sets a brand-new standard for Chinese calligraphers. That makes every sort of collective portrait of Chinese characters into a well-presented masterwork of applied arts.
As much exceptional quality of diverse formed of masterpiece appears overtime. It's a reminder that in all classes of society we must pass our heritage down to the next generation so our ancestors are more than merely just a portion of history. Instead, it is never to be forgotten as an integral part of the culture.“A soul is essential for a country and a nation, " Chinese President Xi Jinping said. “Professionals in the sectors of culture, art, philosophy and social sciences are important soul builders. ”

The Ministry of Education issued a notice on Nov 22,2019 soliciting public opinions on a draft regulation that gives teachers the right to discipline students. According to the regulation, primary and middle school teachers are allowed to criticize and mete out proper punishment on students who violate school discipline, social order, laws and rules, as well as those who cause chaos or disturb the lesson. Should teachers be allowed to discipline students? Readers share their opinions.
Lindasun (China)
Teachers should be prudent (謹(jǐn)慎的) in disciplining students. Their punishment even violence may hurt the children psychologically for the rest of their life. My daughter's teacher makes students who forget to bring homework stand for an hour at their seats where they are forbidden to sit. I do believe the aim is 1o insult the student and it is not acceptable.
Markwu (Malaysia)
Disciplining is a tough task which teachers have to do because there is no one else to do it and, if not done, more of the same bad actions will be committed that ruin the objectives of teaching and learning, and character building for the later part of life and in society, which the teacher and educator has the responsibility to uphold.

Version 1:
An official notice has been issued to grant teachers the right to properly punish students. The public are concerned about this regulation, expressing their opinions on it from different perspectives.(30 words)
As a senior school student, I give applause to this regulation. School is a place where every student should obey rules, and if not, they should be responsible for what they've done. Additionally, proper punishment is a good way to teach students to figure out how to behave themselves, which is also a good example to instruct others.
As to how to discipline students, proper measures, I think, come first to prevent students from violating school rules. School regulations are to be transparently issued, which helps all the people concerned know how students should behave on campus. Besides, teachers should be more patient with students for effective communication. Only with joint efforts can students learn to obey the school rules. (120 words)

An official notice has been issued to grant teachers the right to properly punish students. The public are concerned about this regulation, expressing their opinions on it from different perspectives. (30 words)
As a senior school student, I think it is awful for teachers to adopt punishment to discipline their students. Punishment, if not used properly, may leave a deep scar on the children, which is a great disadvantage to students' lifelong development. What's worse, punishment from teachers may cause conflicts and, as a result, barriers between teachers and students.

A regulation that teachers enjoy due right to criticize and punish misbehaving students was executed. Some support teachers’ disciplining students but not punishing them, while others maintain the penalty might cause long-term psychological harm. (33 words)
Punishment, personally, is indispensable for teachers to discipline mischievous rule breakers. Firstly, it awakens those rule offenders that will face the punishment after getting their way, thus deterring their misdeeds and keeping them well-behaved. Secondly, teachers become more empowered and will carry out teaching on their own initiative, since their right to execute penalty is now protected by the law rather than being dictated by bossy parents or fussy headmasters. (71 words)
To effectively curb students’ misbehavior, firstly, teachers need to involve every student in enacting the rules. Say, a class meeting can be held to discuss the pros and cons of each discipline so that they can keep the sensible ones and eliminate the dross. Secondly, once the rules are set, effective execution should be guaranteed regardless of the breaker’s status or position. This way, the regulations’ prestige can be built, preserved and enhanced.
