One of the greatest contributions to the first Oxford English Dictionary was also one of its most unusual. In 1879, Oxford University in England asked Prof. James Murray to serve as editor for what was to be the most ambitious dictionary in the history of the English language. It would include every English word possible and would give not only the definition but also the history of the word and quotations(引文)showing how it was used.
This was a huge task, so Murray had to find volunteers from Britain, the United States, and the British colonies to search every newspaper, magazine, and book ever written in English.
Hundreds of volunteers responded, including William Chester Minor. Dr. Minor was an American surgeon who had served in the Civil War and was now living in England. He gave his address as “Broadmoor, Crowthome, Berkshire,” 50 miles from Oxford.
Minor joined the army of volunteers sending words and quotations to Murray. Over the next 17 years, he became one of the staff s most valued contributors.
But he was also a mystery. In spite of many invitations, he would always decline to visit Oxford. So in 1897, Murray finally decided to travel to Crowthome himself. When he arrived, he found Minor locked in a book-lined cell at the Broadmoor Asylum(精神病院)for the Criminally insane.
Murray and Minor became friends, sharing their love of words. Minor continued contributing to the dictionary, sending in more than 10,000 submissions in 20 years. Murray continued to visit Minor regularly, sometimes taking walks with him around the asylum grounds.
In 1910, Minor left Broadmoor for an asylum in his native America. Murray was at the port to wave goodbye to his remarkable friend.
Minor died in 1920, seven years before the first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary was completed. The 12 volumes defined 414,825 words, and thousands of them were contributions from a very scholarly and devoted asylum patient.
    24. According to the text, the first Oxford English Dictionary ______.
    A. came out before Minor died
    B. was edited by an American volunteer
    C. included the English words invented by Murray
    D. was intended to be the most ambitious English dictionary
    25. How did Dr. Minor contribute to the dictionary?
    A. He helped Murray to find hundreds of volunteers.
    B. He sent newspapers, magazines and books to Murray.
    C. He provided a great number of words and quotations.
    D. he went to England to work with Murray.
    26. Prof. Murray and Dr. Minor became friends mainly because ______.
    A. they both served in the Civil War
    B. They had a common interest in words
    C. Minor recovered with the help of Murray
    D. Murray went to America regularly to visit Minor
    27. What does the text mainly talk about?
    A. The history of the English language.
    B. The friendship between Murray and Minor.
    C. Minor and the first Oxford English Dictionary.
    D. Broadmoor Asylum and its patients.

There is a famous story about British poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. He was writing a poem when he was interrupted by a knock at the door.
This was an age before telephones. Someone was delivering a message. When Coleridge got back to his poem, he had lost his inspiration. His poetic mood had been broken by the knock on his door. His unfinished poem, which could otherwise have been a masterpiece, would now never be more than a fragment.
This story tells how unexpected communication can destroy an important thought, which bring us to the cellphone.
The most common complaint about cellphones is that people talk on them to the annoyance of people around them. But more damaging may be the cellphone's interruption of our thoughts.
We have already entered a golden age of little white lies about our cellphones, and this is by and large(大體上)a healthy, protective development. “I didn't hear it ring” or “I didn't realize my phone had shut off” are among the lies we tell to give ourselves space where we're beyond reach.
The notion of being unreachable is not a new concept — we have “Do Not Disturb” sign on the doors of hotel rooms. So why must we feel guilty when it comes to cellphones? Why must we apologize if we decide to shut off the phone for a while?
Now time alone, or a conversation with someone next to us which cannot be interrupted by a phone, is something to be cherished. Even cellphone devotees(信徒), myself usually included, can't help at times wanting to throw their phone away, or curse the day they were invented.
But we don't and won't, and there really is no need. All that's required to take back our private time is a general social recognition that we have the right to it. In other words, we have to develop a healthy contempt for the rings of our own phones.
A cellphone call deserves no greater priority than a random word from the person next to us, though the call on my cellphone may be the one-in-a-million from Steven Spielberg — who has finally read my novel and wants to make it his next movie. But most likely it is not, and I'm better off thinking about the idea I just had for a new story, or the slice of pizza I'll eat for lunch.
    28. What is the point of the anecdote(軼事)about the poet Coleridge in the first three paragraphs?
    A. To direct readers' attention to the main topic.
    B. To show how important inspiration is to a poet.
    C. To emphasize the disadvantage of not having a cellphone.
    D. To encourage readers to read the works of this poet.
    29. What does the writer think about people telling “white lies” about their cellphones?
    A. It is a way of signaling that you don't like the caller.
    B. It is natural to tell lies about small things.
    C. It is basically a good way to protect one's privacy.
    D. We should feel guilty when we can't tell the truth.
    30. According to the author, what is the most annoying problem caused by cellphones?
    A. People get so obsessed(著迷)with the cellphone rings that they fail to notice anything else.
    B. People feel guilty when they are not able to answer their cellphones.
    C. Cellphones interrupt people's private time.
    D. With cellphones it is no longer possible to be unreachable.
    31. What does the last paragraph suggest?
    A. A person who calls us from afar deserves more of our attention.
    B. Steven Spielberg once called the author to talk about the author's novel.
    C. You should always finish your lunch before you answer a call on the cellphone.
    D. Never let cellphones disturb your life too much.

Cat lovers finally have the chance to understand what their pets are saying thanks to a smart collar that can interpret meows and translate them into human speech. Named Catterbox, the collar supposedly has a digital sensor that detects meows, and uses a special program to interpret the meaning behind them.
Developed by London ad agency adam&eveDDB, for Temptations cat treats, the invention comes preloaded(預(yù)裝)with a dictionary of cat meows and several other sounds to make the interpretation as accurate as possible. “We're fascinated by cats, so we set out on a mission to get to know them better.” said Pete Simmons, global brand director of Temptations.
The promotion video of the smart collar claims that Catterbox, the world's first talking cat collar, is designed to finally help humans understand the meaning of meows. “Cats are often thought of as independent pets quite hard to get to know, so we set up The Temptations Lab to find creative ways to inject even more pleasure into a cat and owner's relationship,” said Richard Brim, executive creative director of adam&eveDDB.
“Studies show cats only meow in order to communicate with humans,” the video adds. “So we set out on a mission to get to know them better. By analyzing different cat meows, we've designed a digital sensor that detects a cat's meow and uses a unique program to turn it into a human voice.” So by using the collar, owners can speak to their cats and expect a meaningful response. The responses are delivered in a British accent, in a voice of the owner's choice, selected through a smartphone app paired with the collar.
A few sample responses are shown on the company's YouTube channel-they are quite funny, but obviously not very convincing. In all probability, Catterbox is useless though it has a very clever marketing means.
    32. Why did the researchers set up The Temptations Lab?
    A. To help cat lovers get more fun in keeping cats.
    B. To tell cat lovers how to get along with cats.
    C. To do some research on cat's habits.
    D. To prove cats are really difficult to understand.
    33. What can we know about Catterbox according to this passage?
    A. It is selling well among cat lovers now.
    B. It can also help cats understand their owners' languages.
    C. It can translate meows into different languages.
    D. It can be set by a paired smartphone app.
    34. What's the author's attitude towards the smart collar?
    A. Positive. B. Uncaring. C. Doubtful. D. Opposed.
    35. What is the passage mainly about?
    A. A smart collar that translates cat meows into human speech.
    B. Cat lovers who want to understand what cats say.
    C. Scientists who are devoted to inventing a smart collar.
    D. A dictionary of cat meows and other sounds.

    根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,從短文后的選項(xiàng)中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項(xiàng)。選項(xiàng)中有兩項(xiàng)為多余選項(xiàng)。
It should come as no surprise that the more stressed parents are at work, the greater the burden on their family is. 36 . After all, the more time parents spend working, the less time and energy they have to plan and prepare healthful meals. Previously, most studies have focused on the role of working mothers while fathers were ignored. 37 . It adds a new wrinkle to the relationship between work stress and family nutrition. Mom's work-related stress is still a central factor in how well families eat because they typically do most of the food shopping and cooking. 38 .
The study finds that when mom or dad experience high levels of work related stress, their families are eating one-and-a-half fewer family meals per week, and the parents themselves report eating fewer fruits and vegetables, more fast food, and are less likely to eat breakfast regularly.
It's worth noting that the study looks mainly at low income families who belong to ethnic or minority groups. 39 . But the implications are wide-ranging.
40 . Teaching kids, especially teenagers, to help with grocery shopping and to cook actual meals, instead of just putting a frozen pizza in the microwave, could be an important piece of the puzzle in helping families improve their eating habits.
    A. But dad's work-related stress has a large impact, too.
    B. Yet, the kid's stress may affect the families' nutrition, too.
    C. As to family nutrition, the entire family plays a role, even kids.
    D. So the findings don't necessarily apply directly to other types of families.
    E. It is parents who give their kids a good model to develop a good eating habit.
    F. It's also probably not a surprise that this can negatively affect a family's nutrition.
    G. Now, a study looks at the family as a whole and at the role of fathers in particular.

How is everything going with you these days?
In order to fuel our efforts to save the planet and raise public awareness of environmental issues, “a Used Book Donation Campaign” will be carried out in our school next month.(高分句型一)(活動目的)Any used books that we no longer need can be donated and all the collected books will be donated to schools in poor mountainous areas of West China.(高分句型二)(活動內(nèi)容)
I'm sure this campaign will have a great effect on everyone involved. On one hand, we can play a part in recycling resources for the protection of the environment. On the other hand, children in poor areas will benefit from those used books because it's difficult for them to have access to such extra-curricular books.(活動意義)
Do you have similar campaigns in your school? If so, could you please let me know how they are conducted?(期望)
    Yours,
    Li Hua

W: I hear you have changed your job. How do you feel about your new job?
M: Better than the job I used to have. The most important thing is that doing the present job, I can use what I learned from the old job.
    (Text 2)
W: Could you have my dress delivered?
M: Of course, madam. May I have your address, please?
    W: 7345 King Street..
    (Text 3)
M: Sue. That report on my desk has to be finished today. But Fm sick and can't come to the office.
W: I see the report, Bill. I'll finish it for you.
    (Text 4)
M: Mary, you didn't do well in today's maths test. What was the matter?
    W: I was in a hurry, and I didn't check my answers.
M: That's too bad you didn't think of it before..
W: Sorry, Mr. Smith. If only I had been more careful!
    (Text 5)
W: Sorry, Mr Johnson. I forgot to bring my homework.
    M: Did you do it?
W: Yes? but I left in a hurry this morning.
M: Do remember to bring it here tomorrow.
    (Text 6)
W: Good morning Ken! Why are you so early today?
M: Morning, Julia! Well, I was doing my homework, and I have finished it now. You see, the maths homework is difficult for me.
W: Is it? Fm afraid you stayed up again last night for the football match.
M: Yes. That's why I am doing my homework here in the classroom. If my mother had seen I was doing my homework at home, she would have known everything.
W: Your mother is really strict with you.
M: Strict? I think she is hard on me.
W: Then how did you watch the football match last night?
M: I bought a second-hand small TV set with my pocket money. And I put it in my bedroom.
W: Didn't your mother hear you?
M: No, she was too tired after the whole day's work.
W: Did your favorite team win last night? M: Sure!
    (Text 7)
M: So, two men grabbed your bag as you came out of the bank and ran off down the street. Is that correct?
W: Yes. One of them stopped me and asked me the time. The other one grabbed my bag..
M: Would you please describe them? W: Fm not sure, because it happened so quickly.
M: The one who asked you the time, what did he look like?
W: Well, let me see. He was short and he had brown hair and a little moustache. He was very thin, about 20 years old. And he was wearing a black jacket.
M: Did you notice the color of his eyes?
    W: Yes. They were brown.
M: Good, and what about the other man?
W: Fm sorry, but I didn't get a good look at him. He was quite tall. I remember he had a beard. He was bald and he appeared much older than the short one.
M: Thank you. We may call you tomorrow.
    W: OK.
    (Text 8)
M: Have you seen Elizabeth lately?
W: Yes? I have. I saw her a couple of weeks ago. She hasn't been very well in the last couple of weeks.
M: Has she seen a doctor since she's been ill?
W: Yes? she has. The doctor told her to take it easy for a while, but she hasn't been following his advice. She's as busy as usual.
M: Do you think it useful for me to ask her to have a rest while I go to see her? Or shall we go together?.
W: I think you can go yourself and show your concern to her since she sometimes would take your advice. So it's unnecessary for me to go with you. What's more, I've got my hands full tomorrow.
    (Text 9)
W: Now, let me show you around our school. This is our computer lab.
M: Wow! So many computers! How many computers do you have?
W: We have 80 in this lab and we have another 40 in another lab. Besides all these, we have one for each teacher.
M: Then, how many teachers do you have?
W: 88. The teachers are using the computers as aids in their classes.
M: Really? Can we go into the classes to have a look?
W: Yes. This is an English class. The teacher is explaining new words with the help of the computer.
M: How nice! It is easier to explain the words with the help of the computer.
W: And it saves a lot of time.
    (Text 10)
Good morning, everybody. My topic for today is “Early Money”. I'm going to tell you something about money used in the early days. To be honest, we know little about how early people came to use money, but we do know some things which have been used as money. In early times, in some European countries, salt was used as money. In some parts of Asia, tea was used for money. The American Indians used nuts and other things. Perhaps the most common money of all was animal of some kind. In some places today, cows are still used as a kind of money. So you see, things highly valued by everybody may sen^e as money.
The Chinese were the first people to use coins as money. Oh? sorry, you don't know the word? Well, it is spelled C-O-I-N. Here are some coins of the past. You can come over and have a look.
