Concrete is the world's most consumed material after water. Because it already surrounds us in the built environment, researchers have been exploring the idea of using concrete to store electricity-turning buildings into giant batteries. The idea has been gaining ground as we have come to increasingly rely on renewable energy from the wind and sun: rechargeable batteries are necessary when the breeze dies down or darkness falls.
Experimental concrete batteries have only managed to hold a small part of what a traditional battery does. But one team now reports in Buildings that it has developed a rechargeable original model that could represent a more than 900 percent increase in stored charge, compared with earlier attempts.
A live-in concrete battery might sound unlikely. Still," you can make a battery out of a potato," notes Aimee Byrne. In a future where sustainability(可持續(xù)性)is key, she likes the idea of buildings that avoid waste by providing shelter and powering electronics.
Although the new design stores more than 10 times as much power as earlier attempts, it still has a long way to go:200 square meters of it "can provide about 8 percent of the daily electricity consumption" of a typical U.S. home, Zhang says.
This is not enough to compete with today's rechargeable devices. "We're getting milliamps(毫安)out of concrete batteries-were not getting amps(安培)," Byrne says. "We're getting hours as opposed to days of charge." But she adds that "concrete batteries are completely in their childhood, compared to other battery designs." The earliest batteries were simple and bulky. Researchers experimented with new materials and designs for more than a century to develop today's small devices. Byrne suggests concrete-based energy storage could undergo a similar evolution." The whole idea is that we're looking far into the future," she says. "We're playing the long game with it."
28. What can we infer about the concrete batteries?
A. They become increasingly renewable. B. They are the most consumed batteries.
C. They will replace energy from the wind and sun. D. They are being developed by researchers.
29. Why does Byrne mention a battery out of a potato?
A. To show it is easy to build concrete batteries.
B. To argue it is possible to develop concrete batteries.
C. To make her statement more interesting.
D. To call on people to protect the environment.
30. What does the underlined word "bulky" in Paragraph 5 mean?
A. cheap B. heavy C. efficient D. small
31. What does Byrne think of concrete batteries?
A. They have a long way to go. B. They are simple and bulky.
C. They have a doubtful future. D. They beat today's rechargeable devices.

It's clear that hiking-and any other physical activity-can reduce stress and anxiety. But there's something about being in nature that may expand those effects. Scientists are beginning to find evidence that being in nature greatly influences our brains and our behavior, helping us to reduce anxiety and stress, and increasing our creativity and our ability to connect with other people.
In one recent experiment conducted in Japan, participants were asked to walk either in a forest or in an urban center(taking walks of equal length and difficulty) while having their heart rate variability(可變性), heart rate, and blood pressure measured. The participants also filled out questionnaires about their moods, stress levels, and other psychological measures.
Results showed that those who walked in forests had apparently lower heart rates and higher heart rate variability, indicating more relaxation and less stress, and reported better moods and less anxiety, than those who walked in urban settings. The researchers concluded, that there's something about being in nature that has a beneficial effect on stress reduction, above and beyond what exercise alone might have produced.
In another study, researchers in Finland found that urban people who walked for as little as 20 minutes through an urban park or woodland reported more stress relief than those who walked in a city center.
The reasons for this effect are unclear, but scientists believe that we evolve to be more relaxed in natural spaces. In a now-classic laboratory experiment by Roger Ulrich of Texas A&M University, participants who first viewed a stress-causing movie, and were then exposed to color/sound videotapes describing natural scenes, showed much quicker and more complete recovery from stress than those who’d been exposed to videos of urban settings.
These studies and others provide evidence that being in natural spaces-or even just looking out of a window onto a natural scene-somehow helps us become calm and relieves stress.
32. How did the researchers in Japan make their discovery?
A. By referring to a former study. B. By conducting tests in the laboratory.
C. By experimenting and making a comparison. D. By studying examples and analyzing causes.
33. What is the best way to reduce stress according to the text?
A. Doing exercise in the gym. B. Walking in a city park.
C. Wandering along city streets. D. Watching a classic movie.
34. Why did Roger Ulrich show the participants a movie in his experiment?
A. To make them under pressure. B. To find reasons for nature's effect.
C. To help them relax their minds. D. To lead to faster recovery from stress.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Stress Comes from Urban Settings B. Being in Nature Decreases Stress
C. Why Nature Can Relieve Our Stress D. How We Are Affected by Natural Scenes
第二節(jié)(共5小題;每小題2分,滿分10分)

Failure is probably the most exhausting experience one ever has. There is nothing more tiring than not succeeding.
We experience this' tiredness in two ways: start-up fatigue(疲憊)and performance fatigue. In the former case, we keep putting off a task because it is either too boring or too difficult. 36
Such start-up fatigue is very real, even if not actually physical. The solution is obvious though perhaps not easy to apply: always handle the most difficult job first. 37 Using my own rule, I determined to write them in alphabetical(字母)order and I always started the day's work with the difficult task of essay-writing. Experience proved that the rule works.
38 Its difficulties appear so great that we fail again and again. In such a situation, I work as hard as I can and then let the unconscious take over. When planning Encyclopedia Britannica, I had to create a table of contents. Nothing like this had ever been done before so that my fatigue became almost unbearable. I tried to convince myself that the trouble was with the problem itself, not with me. 39 An hour later, I woke up suddenly with the solution which had come up in my unconscious mind and proved correct at every step.
40 Success was now as exciting as failure had been depressing. Human beings, I believe, must try to succeed. Success, then, means never feeling tired.
A. Feeling relieved, I sat back in an easy chair and fell asleep.
B. Hard as I worked as before, I felt no fatigue.
C. This feeling finally weighed me down.
D. Performance fatigue is more difficult to handle.
E. And the longer we delay it, the more tired we feel.
F. I racked my brains day and night and wrote the essays desperately.
G. I once was asked to write quite a lot of essays on some famous authors.
