The zebra belongs to the horse family. One of nature’s great mysteries is why the zebra has stripes. One theory is that the stripes help the zebra cool down. On hot days the black stripes get a lot hotter than the white area of the zebra and under the black stripes there are special layers of fat for protection. Hot air then rises off the black stripes, forcing colder air down around the white areas, cooling the zebra down This, however, is just a kind of theory. The stripes can also confuse predators when zebras stay with other animals in great numbers.
Zebras have excellent hearing and eyesight and can run at speeds of up to 56 kilometers per hour. They also have a powerful kick that can cause serious injury to a predator, like a lion, or an African wild dog. Usually the lead male of the herd stays at the back of the group to defend against predators if necessary, while the females and youngsters escape danger.
Zebras are herbivores that feed only on plants and lives mostly by eating grasses, although they also might eat a bit of the leaves and stems of bushes. They eat grasses for many hours each day, using their strong teeth. Spending so much time chewing wears the zebras’ teeth down, so their teeth keep growing all their lives. As the dry season arrives and the grasses die back, zebra herds travel to find more food and water holes for drinking. Most zebras have no specific territories. They travel from place to place, never staying in one area very long.
1. It can be inferred from the first paragraph that ________.
A. there are different opinions about why the zebra has stripes
B. the black stripes help the zebra live through cold days
C. the zebra can be easily attacked by predators
D. the zebra always travels with other animals
2. According to the passage, herbivores are animals that ________.
A. have specific territories B. only eat plants
C. kill and eat other animals D. live in groups
3. The zebra has strong teeth all their lives because their teeth ________.
A. only chew soft grasses B. are used all day
C. are always growing D. are kept clean
【答案】1. A 2. B 3. C

Last July, my 12-year-old car died on California’s Santa Ana Freeway. It was an hour before sunset, and I was 25 miles from home. I couldn’t reach anyone to pick me up, so I decided to take a bus. Not knowing the routes, I figured I’d just head east. A bus pulled up, and I asked the driver how far she was going. “Four more lights,” she said. There was another bus I could take from there. This clearly was going to be a long night. She dropped me off at the end of her route and told me which bus to look for.
After waiting 30 minutes, I began to think about a very expensive taxi ride home. Then a bus pulled up. There was no lighted number above its windshield (擋風玻璃). It was out of service. But the door opened, and I was surprised to find that it was the same driver. “ I just can’t leave you here,” she said. “ This isn’t the nicest place. I’ll give you a ride home.” “You’ll drive me in the bus?” I asked, perplexed(困惑的). “No, I’ll take you in my car,” she said. “ It’s a long way,” I protested. “Come on,” she said. “I have nothing else to do.” As we drove from the station in her car, she began telling me a story. A few days earlier, her brother had run out of gas. A good Samaritan picked him up, took him to a service station and then back to his car.
“I’m just passing the favor along,” she said. When I offered her money as a thank-you, she wouldn’t hear of it. “That wouldn’t make it a favor,” she said. “Just do something nice for somebody. Pass it along.”
4. Judging from its context, the place where the writer waited for the second bus was ________.
A. very quiet and peaceful B. dark without street lights
C. neither clean nor beautiful D. a little unsafe
5. Why did the writer change his mind after waiting for 30 minutes at the end of the route?
A. No bus would come at the time.
B. A taxi ride would be more comfortable.
C. He became impatient and a bit worried.
D. He knew the driver would never return.
6. The bus driver drove the writer home later because ________.
A. she happened to go in the same direction
B. she wanted to do something good for other people
C. her brother told her to do so
D. she wanted to earn more money
7. The bus driver hoped that the writer ________.
A. would do as she did B. would keep her in memory
C. would give the money to others D. would do her a favor
【答案】4. D 5. C 6. B 7. A

Many cars in advertisements and on exhibition in the United States are red, blue or green, but almost 75 percent of new cars sold in the United States are black, white, silver or gray.
Les Jackson is a reporter who writes about cars. He says the colors of cars Americans choose do not show dirt. He says that means the owners wash their cars less in order to save money. And he notes some areas that are suffering from water shortages do not permit people to wash their cars often.
Dan Benton works for a company called Axalta, which makes supplies for international car makers. He says white cars are often sold more expensive than cars of other colors. And he notes that white cars “absorb(吸收)less energy” than cars of other colors. This means temperatures inside them are lower in warmer areas. Benton also says research at Monash University in Australia suggests that there is a lower risk of crashes during the day for white cars compared with darker ones.
Car buyers in other countries also like white. Jane Harrington works for PPG Industries, a company that makes paint for cars. She said in China, buyers say white makes a small car look bigger.
About 11 percent of cars sold in North America are red and 8 percent are blue. Green has become less popular. Benton notes that in the mid-1990s green was the most popular color in North America. Today, green is hard to find.
Sometime in the future, people may not have to choose the color of their cars —— technology may let owners change their cars’ paint color anytime.
8. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A. Most Americans don’t like red cars.
B. People in America are not allowed to wash their cars.
C. Many people prefer to choose white cars in America.
D. Americans may consider the cost of cleaning when choosing cars.
9. Why do many people choose white cars?
A. They are much cheaper than cars of other colors..
B. They are much safer while crashing.
C. They are bigger than cars of other colors.
D. They are more comfortable inside in warmer areas.
10. What do we know from the text?
A. Les Jackson is a member of Axalta.
B. Most Americans rarely wash their cars.
C. PPG Industries mainly produces cars in China.
D. Green cars were once popular in North America.

Taking a picture of your tongue with a mobile phone could soon tell you how healthy you are. Researchers believe the images can reveal important information about a patient’s health and even give them early warning of serious illness.
A team at the University of Missouri is developing a system that can analyze pictures using a 5,000-year-old Chinese principle, which is based on the flow and balance of positive and negative energies in the body, and uses the tongue as a key to learning about a person’s physical health, or “zheng” according to Chinese medicine.
“Within a year, our goal is to create an application for smart phones that will allow anyone to take a photo of their tongue and learn the state of their zheng,” said Dong Xu, chair of MU’s Computer Science Department in the College of Engineering and the co-author of the latest study.
The software analyzes images based on the tongue’s color and coating to distinguish between tongues showing signs of “hot” or “cold” zheng. Shades of red and yellow are connected with hot zheng, while a white coating on the tongue is a sign of cold zheng.
“Hot and cold zheng doesn’t refer directly to body temperature,” said Xu, “Rather, it refers to a series of symptoms connected with the state of the body as a whole.”
For the study, 263 gastritis patients and 48 healthy volunteers had their tongues analyzed. The gastritis patients were classified by whether they showed infection by a certain bacteria as well as the intensity of their gastritis symptoms. In addition, most of the gastritis patients had been previously classified with either hot or cold zheng. This allowed the researchers to test the accuracy of the software’s analysis.
“Our software is able to classify people based on their zheng state. And as we continue to work on the software, we hope to improve its ability,” said another co-author Ye Duan, “Eventually everyone will be able to use this tool at home using smart phone applications, which will allow them to monitor their zheng and get an early warning about possible ailments.”
12. The software mentioned in the passage is based on ________.
A. the latest development of smart phones B. a traditional Chinese medical principle
C. the changes in one’s flow and energy D. symptoms connected with the state of the body
13. According to Chinese medicine, zheng refers to ________.
A. one’s body temperature B. the physical health of a person
C. the possible disease of a person D. the color and coating of one’s tongue
14. The underlined word “ailments” can be replaced by _________.
A. analysis B. effects C. illnesses D. applications
15. It can be inferred from the passage that _________.
A. the software still needs improvement B. the subjects in the study are all gastritis
C. the software has been in market for a year D. the subjects in the study are classified by age
